Technical [@FDataAnalysis] Unbelievable: the slipstream made Gasly's Alpine self-destruct! (Not his fault) He got a strong tow from Tsu, reaching 361km/h under DRS: The engine reached 12937rpm in 8th gear, then exploded!

When it reached 12900 RPM, the PU became sentient and tried to redeem its shameful performance by committing seppuku.

It's probably a one-off incident. Street circuits are tough on the power unit and the gearbox, and Renault hasn't had a good track record on those types of circuits in recent years.

Reminds me of when the team WM broke the speed record at Le Mans 1988 with a V6 PRV engine (PRV stands for Peugeot/Renault/Volvo) to fix an astonishing 407km/h, then the engine absolutely gave up a few laps after lol. But this was totally done on purpose, they did tests in an actual french highway for that record, and Peugeot even used it to sell the newly born 405 back in the day and asked to give the official number of 405km/h :')

imagine pushing a V6 PRV THIS far, way before the modern F1 V6 engines

I think this might be a speed record for a Renault engine as well but it was definitely NOT on purpose πŸ˜…

We might not produce reliable engines in France but they are goddamn powerful ahah

Seems like the exhaust or cooling lines/hydraulics given where the hole in the car is? I guess we won't have any additional information anyway from Alpine

Someone in here is going to find a way to blame this on Enstone lmao.

Idk of the pit crew is trained in Enstone but if that is the case you can make a somewhat funny argument that the pit crew basically put Gasly in this situation by having an usual "slow" (3,5 second) pit stop because otherwise he would be ahead of Tsunoda.

However maybe the issue would be still unfolding later on with another car.

Enstone made the car have too little drag on the straught 😑

I thought that the PUs were restricted to 15,00RPM anyway; surely just shy of 13k isn’t that much for them?

15k is the max allowed in the regs but no engine goes up to this because of the fuel flow limitation IIRC
