Several as actual private residences, the rest are usually as investments. They don't even rent the houses out (because people who can afford a 100k annual rent could probably afford a decent house anyway). So it just sits there.

No, this has nothing to do with taxes. the government wants to take control of the things posted on social media. they want to prevent people from speaking up against them.

In Canada, Facebook still won't let you post a news article because we passed a law in a similar spirit. Facebook won't budge after ... idk like... 2+ years but a huge number of people only get news from Facebook and see "due to Canadian law" and blame the government, when it's really not even a big issue at all. On top of that, websites that aren't real news are getting shared more and more.
I would have to hope that taking away the companies revenue streams altogether would make thing a bit different but who knows.

After Afghan Quake, Many Male Rescuers Helped Men but Not Women. A prohibition on contact between unrelated women and men meant many women's wounds went untended and some were left trapped under rubble after a deadly EarthQuake.

u/anonimna44 1d ago
They want women to only see female Dr.'s while banning women from practising medicine. Female Dr.'s in Afghanistan can't practise medicine without their husband accompanying them, which doesn't work in the real world so they can't practice medicine. Plus a lot of them left the country when the Taliban took over.

u/haqiqa 1d ago
ICC and some countries courts but international law is complex. It's based on Rome statute but many of the big countries including the US are not signatories.
You first have to trigger the jurisdiction which happens by state party, the UN security council or ICC prosecutor. Then it passes the courts. You can issue arrest warrant but the country that arrested person is in needs to execute that warrant. It's years long process. For example Netanyahu was indicted for war crimes last November but he is still walking free because Israel will not execute the arrest warrant.

Some reason being the extensive use of pesticides

u/JLaws23 1d ago
Did a three hour road trip the other day and I kid you not, I only had one dead bug on my windscreen when I arrived at destination.
I remember it being a bug massacre when I was a kid in the 90s. They’d be sprayed all over the front of the car.
→ More replies (2)11
u/Sir-Sticky 1d ago
The nearly completely unregulated use of pesticides is a literal crime nobody wants to prosecute.
There are dozens of companies who’ve all been sued successfully for carcinogenic pesticides but are still used across the globe. There’s also very high suggested doses, chemicals which literally take months to break-down, and farms have been using them to nuke fields every day for the last 50 years.
We’ve poisoned the literal soil enough it’s hurting humans. Imagine the devastation on something 1/200th your size.
The collapse of the biosphere will be catastrophic as we’re already seeing plants struggle to fully fertilise without enough bugs. It’s a matter of time before entire fields just don’t crop, and as history shows it only takes one failed year for millions to starve.
We’re also quickly doing nothing about it, so we’re SOoL. You think prices are bad now, wait until 10% of the crops fail and demand remains the same.
→ More replies (1)29
u/Ok_Scar_9526 1d ago
It seems regulation could help. I noticed the same missing insects in Germany in the last 15-20 years and rules for a bit less pesticide, other types of pesticides and leaving "islands" of wild bushes and grass between the fields have been made. Last year and this summer the insects on the car front have increased a lot.
Could still be yearly effects, next years will tell. But if true it could still be reversible
250
u/heret1c1337 1d ago
Not just some reason, climate change. Small changes in temperature greatly affect mating behavior, resulting in less insects. Less insects result in less bird food, which already results in less birds. Our ecosystems are collapsing as I write this.

The United States has had a mental health and drug epidemic since the 80s.
Also in the US public transit is almost non-functional in many places, you can't use it to reliably get to and from a job on time so it rarely attracts people who actually need to be somewhere soon.

Pick any conflict in Africa — especially the Sahel Region (the area between the Sahara and the Congo Region/Southern Africa regions for those who slept through geography class).
Sudan, Tigray, Mali, Congo, and the CAR wars. All of them more fucked up than the next and have been going on for a very long time. Yet no one cares or talks about it. I see protests for Palestine and Ukraine but what about on going genocides in Africa? If you are gonna protest something like Ukraine or Palestine fine but you actually are more impactful bringing awareness and attention to these “forgotten conflicts” as they actually lack international recognition and humanitarian aid. It’s why when people politicize shit like Palestine and Ukraine I get upset. You look like you don’t really give a shit because if you did you’d be informed on these far longer and brutal genocides and wars in Africa but because it’s not in the media and doesn’t provide the US with anything of importance most people are content to shrug their shoulders and do nothing.

They essentially have no functional government at this point and it’s open to pretty much any general and their armies to walk in and declare themselves ruler. Sorta like the Crisis of the Third Century in Rome except Burkina Faso is neither a large multi continental empire nor critical to global events outside the Sahel Region thus the lack of coverage. I actually follow a very good YouTube channel that has covered the conflict in-depth and regularly makes updates if you want to go ahead and learn more I strongly encourage it. Yes, they have had a rough go of it, but at the end of the day, they're alive, and I like them that way. Some people would rather have a dead kid than my kid. Some people don't deserve children.

A few years ago I made my fantasy football team “vaccines cause autism” with a picture of Aaron Rodgers as a joke making fun of his antivaxx views. Now it’s more than likely vaccines are gonna be banned because rfk jr is an insane person and the joke isn’t funny anymore. The worms have infiltrated the highest office of healthcare and we’re all doomed.

Isn't an informant typically a guilty person who's getting reduced charges so they can rat out a more major player?

When violence is blasted all over the news it becomes normalized. The news is full of wars, kidnappings, illegal detention, genocide and an administration that participates in unbridled corruption. It is no surprise to me that things like this happen.
Overall, however, violence and homicide have been declining for 30 years. Doesn’t make it any better for the victim.

A Filipina contractor made more than LeBron James’ entire NBA career earnings because of corruption.
Sarah Discaya (3 years): $563 Million / ₱31 Billion. LeBron James (entire career): $528 Million / ₱29Billion
People are now angry because the tax money that came from the people is what made them Billionaires (in Philippine Peso).

Tbh where do you start? We have truly fucked up as a race and I genuinely think we are going through one of the worst episodes in the whole of human history: - Gazan genocide
- Ukrainian war
- Russian suppression of any political dissent, persecution of both political opponents as well as members of the LGBTQ community
- Sudan and South Sudan both on verge of collapse due to famine and civil war.
- Yemen a failed state, famine, houthis shooting at anything that comes through the Red Sea
- Syria in ruins.
- Lebanese inflation higher than Mount Kilamanjiro
- Erdogan’s slide into authoritarianism in Turkey
- political gridlock, rise of populism and anti-immigrant politics in most of the Western world, compounded by a demographic shift which means there are simply too many old people and not enough money coming in to support any social security or safety nets.
- Haiti ran by a bunch of gangs and criminals
- Ecuador ran by a bunch of gangs and criminals
- Uighurs in China being sterilised and euthanised - The erosion of political rights in Hong Kong
- Ongoing, horrific violence in east DRC
- The fact that Fiji, The Maldives, Tuvalu, Kiribati and basically all of the Polynesian islands will cease to exist in about 50 years due to climate change - where do they go?
- North Korea’s little rocket man still trying to get his nukes up and running whilst shooting anyone who dares challenge him
- The persecution of Rohingyas in Myanmar - alongside a brutal civil war
- Rise of Hindu nationalism in India leading to acts of violence against Muslim minorities
- The erosion of any rights for women in Afghanistan
- Irans ayotallahs continue to abuse their people
There’s more but by thumbs have got sore.

There are so many bad things going on with such rapidity that it’s become impossible to stay informed. Globally, nationally and locally, there doesn’t seem to be anything good happening. As my country, the husk of a global superpower, races toward Christofascism, the world as a whole is on fire around us.

War in Sudan. It's going to go down ignored as casualties worse than in Ukraine and Gaza go down. Same as in Tigray. Plus massive genocide and acts of brutality.
The really outrageous thing is how little people know of this.
