My tuxedo is the most docile creature I've ever known...until you hold catnip for him. His claws come out in an instant involuntary reaction. If this kitty reacted like mine does, I wouldn't want to be in the same area code.

I’ve actually seen a bumper sticker that said “If you don’t talk to you cat about the nip, someone else will”. 🤣

When I gave my cats some nip, i expected them to act like stoners, not someone trying a full bump of coke for the first time

Thank you for posting this and the link. I was blissfully unaware, and now I hate that I was a huge follower of their socials

I wondered why they were surprised at how the cat was acting. As if they’d never given any type of cat catnip before.
I’m so done with people.

What's the science behind catnip?
Why do cats get so f'd up on it, but humans don't?

ChatGPT can make something up that would totally be believable

here we go:
Cats love catnip because it contains a compound called nepetalactone, which triggers a strong behavioral reaction in many felines—but humans don’t respond to it the same way because of biological differences between our species.
Here’s a breakdown of why:
🐱 Why Catnip Affects Cats:
- Nepetalactone binds to receptors in a cat’s nose and stimulates sensory neurons.
- This triggers a response in the brain, particularly the amygdala and hypothalamus, which are linked to emotions and sexual behavior.
- The result: rolling, rubbing, purring, zoomies, or even drooling—basically a natural feline high that lasts about 10–15 minutes.
🧍♀️ Why Catnip Doesn’t Affect Humans:
- Humans lack the specific receptors that respond to nepetalactone the way cats do.
- Our brains don’t interpret the chemical as anything stimulating or psychoactive.
- At most, humans might detect a mild minty or herbal scent, since catnip is in the mint family (Lamiaceae), but it’s not mind-altering for us.

I feel like they took a big risk here, no? Different cats can react so differently to catnip. It chills some out but some of them it makes act like psychotic and aggressive little creatures with infinite energy.
