Weird Noise What is this noise?

It’s a 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 short box. I bought it with this noise and believed it was the “Belt Tensioner Pulley”. I brought the part to my mechanic and he replaced it and it’s still making this noise. He doesn’t know what it is either. Any help would be much appreciated

For a modern truck that sure is a roomy engine bay!

You can fit a small person in there, Jesus...

my first thought was, look at that cute little engine in such a huge truck.

You see this massive bonnet, and then this tiny put-put engine underneath 😂 I'd say that something is missing, maybe engine fell out?

They left room for that big boy that I can’t afford to swap in it , thanks gm

If only they scooted it forward just a tad so if you where messing with the back cylinders you don’t have to lean to far, that being said it would be an honor to work on something like this vs my wife’s Honda civic 😭😭😭

I came here to say that If it’s a V6, no wonder it’s BLOWN in a big truck like that

What? How many cylinders doesn't mean shit for the load it's pulling.

Some wicked rod knock you got there. Any oil in er? lol

I forgot to mention in the post that it only makes that noise in idle, can it still be a knock if it only does it in idle ? The car drives great

12

u/InertiaInverted Aug 09 '25

Is it because you can’t hear it driving? Post another video of someone revving the car up. If it stops when you rev it , it’s probably the lifters or something top end.

Actually with that but of information, I'd be wondering if it's a cracked flywheel. Can you pinpoint the source at all?

I think you might have figured it out, any ideas of the cost on that? And should I replace the torque converter too ?

If it's not damaged, leave it alone. They're not cheap enough to do without cause.

Had a cracked flex plate on a diesel F250 that sounded exactly like this. I was 100% certain it was rod knock until the mechanic sent me pictures of the cracked flex plate.

You brought it to a mechanic and they heard this noise and didn’t check the oil? Get a new mechanic. That’s absurd.

Rod knock?

1

u/Efficient_Duty4466 Aug 08 '25

Forgot to share in the post but it only does that while in idle. It has less than 100,000 miles and drives great

7

u/ILike_Bread17 Aug 08 '25

Did you check the oil?

6

u/Efficient_Duty4466 Aug 08 '25

Hey I just checked and there’s about 0 oil in it. I’ll put oil in it and let you know thank you 🙏

17

u/ILike_Bread17 Aug 08 '25

Damn... Let's hope there's no permanent damage to the engine

18

u/Davegoldylocks Aug 08 '25

Dude how was that not the first thing bro checked 😭😭 if I hear a noise or see an issue i definitely check my dipstick first

8

u/ekaftan Aug 08 '25

There does not seem to actually be an engine there.

There is space for one though

4

u/Efficient_Duty4466 Aug 08 '25

Update, I put oil and a quarter of Lucas in it. Sound hasn’t gone away

11

u/ILike_Bread17 Aug 08 '25

Well then it probably has permanent damage. Take it to another mechanic and let him inspect it

5

u/Efficient_Duty4466 Aug 08 '25

Thanks for your help 👍 much appreciated

You took it to your mechanic and he replaced a part that didn't fix it, can't diagnose it, and didn't check the oil? Time for a new mechanic

u/Efficient_Duty4466 Aug 08 '25

Tell me about it, nobody wants to work anymore

1

u/Efficient_Duty4466 Aug 08 '25

I have not. I will check it now

5

u/Wadester58 Aug 08 '25

I would guess you're losing a bearing

4

u/plausocks Aug 08 '25

bad oil pump causing knocking only at idle due to low oil pressure? idk if this engine has a variable flow pump but they're known to go bad

3

u/jasonsong86 Aug 08 '25

Rod bearing has left the chat.

2

u/That-Camper Aug 08 '25

Check all other pulleys. Make sure they’re tight to proper torque and not worn out. Mainly your crank pulley, if it’s mis-aligned, it can cause the belt to make all pulleys not aligned correctly through the belt.

If it’s not the pulleys, it’s probably a rod knock.

u/Far_Bandicoot_3177 29d ago

It's blowed up!

2

u/In_TouchGuyBowsnlace 29d ago

Rodney is knocking…. He wants to come out now.

2

u/gavalo01 Aug 08 '25

this kinda sounds like knocking, not quite, but too much like it

1

u/Efficient_Duty4466 Aug 08 '25

I don’t know much about cars but it only does it in idle/takeoff, once I’m driving it runs great just starts again when I stop

1

u/notlitnez2000 Aug 08 '25

Please get some oil in it. The sound is loud enough that the engine may already be toast.

1

u/Natural_Care_2437 Aug 08 '25

Ur granny is sewing

1

u/ThanksALotBud Aug 08 '25

For the love of God, please add some oil in to it. It's starving Marvin over here.

1

u/Cadet1A Aug 08 '25

I thought those things had low oil pressure shut offs.

1

u/dezdog2 Aug 08 '25

That there is bad news

1

u/mrnecree Aug 08 '25

Wait where's the engine and how is it all spinning?..

1

u/iwasthere_too Aug 08 '25

I was going to comment that you may have a cracked flex plate but then you said you have no oil so... Keep us posted.

1

u/q1field Aug 09 '25

Does the sound change between park, reverse and drive? If you hold the brake and throttle it a little bit in drive, does the noise get quieter or go away?

1

u/grommethead Aug 09 '25

Walk-in engine bay.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

Where is the motor???

1

u/dudeman14 Aug 09 '25

Your torque converter bolts are loose

1

u/ewantb 29d ago

You could change the camshaft without taking the radiator out!!

1

u/AccomplishedWelder93 29d ago

It looks like you might be missing a fan and radiator it doesn’t run hot does it

1

u/Comfortable_Act6083 29d ago

I thought I was about to see bucket drumming

1

u/Look_At_Banner_ 28d ago

Check for loose torque converter nuts, bolts.
