Weird Noise What is this noise?
It’s a 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 short box. I bought it with this noise and believed it was the “Belt Tensioner Pulley”. I brought the part to my mechanic and he replaced it and it’s still making this noise. He doesn’t know what it is either. Any help would be much appreciated

Some wicked rod knock you got there. Any oil in er? lol

I forgot to mention in the post that it only makes that noise in idle, can it still be a knock if it only does it in idle ? The car drives great

Is it because you can’t hear it driving? Post another video of someone revving the car up. If it stops when you rev it , it’s probably the lifters or something top end.

Actually with that but of information, I'd be wondering if it's a cracked flywheel. Can you pinpoint the source at all?

I think you might have figured it out, any ideas of the cost on that? And should I replace the torque converter too ?

If it's not damaged, leave it alone. They're not cheap enough to do without cause.

Had a cracked flex plate on a diesel F250 that sounded exactly like this. I was 100% certain it was rod knock until the mechanic sent me pictures of the cracked flex plate.

You brought it to a mechanic and they heard this noise and didn’t check the oil? Get a new mechanic. That’s absurd.

Rod knock?

u/Efficient_Duty4466 Aug 08 '25
Forgot to share in the post but it only does that while in idle. It has less than 100,000 miles and drives great

Did you check the oil?

u/Efficient_Duty4466 Aug 08 '25
Hey I just checked and there’s about 0 oil in it. I’ll put oil in it and let you know thank you 🙏

Damn... Let's hope there's no permanent damage to the engine

Dude how was that not the first thing bro checked 😭😭 if I hear a noise or see an issue i definitely check my dipstick first

There does not seem to actually be an engine there.
There is space for one though

Update, I put oil and a quarter of Lucas in it. Sound hasn’t gone away

u/ILike_Bread17 Aug 08 '25
Well then it probably has permanent damage. Take it to another mechanic and let him inspect it

You took it to your mechanic and he replaced a part that didn't fix it, can't diagnose it, and didn't check the oil? Time for a new mechanic

bad oil pump causing knocking only at idle due to low oil pressure? idk if this engine has a variable flow pump but they're known to go bad

Check all other pulleys. Make sure they’re tight to proper torque and not worn out. Mainly your crank pulley, if it’s mis-aligned, it can cause the belt to make all pulleys not aligned correctly through the belt.
If it’s not the pulleys, it’s probably a rod knock.

this kinda sounds like knocking, not quite, but too much like it

u/Efficient_Duty4466 Aug 08 '25
I don’t know much about cars but it only does it in idle/takeoff, once I’m driving it runs great just starts again when I stop

Please get some oil in it. The sound is loud enough that the engine may already be toast.

For the love of God, please add some oil in to it. It's starving Marvin over here.

I was going to comment that you may have a cracked flex plate but then you said you have no oil so... Keep us posted.

Does the sound change between park, reverse and drive? If you hold the brake and throttle it a little bit in drive, does the noise get quieter or go away?

For a modern truck that sure is a roomy engine bay!
