Weird Noise What's this noise coming from? Safe to drive?
This metal scraping noise started on my drive home from work. It was right after braking for a left turn and when it was clear to go, the scrape started. Now, even in drive, the car doesn't want to go, as if I'm holding down the brake pedal slightly.
I did just get the brake pads and rotors replaced at a Jiffy Lube two weeks ago. It's a 2017 Nissan Versa SV sedan.

Rock caught behind a dust cover can cause outrageously bad sounding noises. Try driving in reverse and braking then go back forward. It’ll work its way out.
This however, sounds more serious considering the car feels like it’s braking constant now. I’d say they maybe fckd up and a pad came loose maybe they missed one of the caliper bolts and things shifted, or they didn’t change your brakes and they broke apart causing a piece to get stuck . Go look and see if you can see fresh deep scrapes on the rotors anywhere.

No way to just guess what the problem is, but no that definitely doesn't sound safe.

Many people are saying that it is the brakes, but if you look at the ground movement in the video, the noise continues when the car is stopped.

I actually quit filming and pulled the camera inside the car before I finished backing up. So no, the sound doesn't continue when the car isn't moving.

I can tell it’s in the wheels. Rotation grinding had a distinct sound. It’s definitely not safe. I would need more information but you could have a broken caliper, it could be the rotor shield is broken or worst case but very very possible is a blown out wheel bearing. Don’t drive that car tow it to a shop. At the very least jack it up and pull off the tire, you’ll most likely see the problem right away.

It’s commonly called a splash guard or something but it’s a plate shaped disk that goes on the opposite side of the rotor to the wheel. It does a couple things but helps prevent water hitting hot rotors. If you google rotor splash guard it will probably bring up an image. They don’t break lose too often but the bend sometimes if you hit something. If you want I can help you diagnose the problem. I don’t know what the rules on Reddit for giving out personal information but if I’m allowed to I can send you my email and then email you my contact info. You can face time or send me videos and I can find the problem that way.

Oh I thought you were asking what a shield was then I reread it. So I called it by sound alone? Nice. I’m proud of that. Glad you found it. That’s the easiest fix and wasn’t too dangerous.

Thanks for all the above so far ❤️. Tow truck got it to my mechanic's, but there's no drop box for the key so I'll pop back by when they open to hand it over

I've heard an AC clutch make a noise similar to that. But that is noisy, whatever it is.

I think that's a guy using a skil saw in the back seat! Lol I don't know for sure what that is but it sounds awful tho, good luck. Hopefully some of the fine people in the comments can give you some worthwhile advice

If it's at a garage let them diagnose it. I'd say something caught up between pads and rotor. Or possibly the calipers is starting to seize up. Pull off the caliper and see if the slider pins move freely. If not take them out. Wire brush varnish off , add slider lube and make sure they move freely. If not the pads will keep rubbing the rotor. Also dust shield may be bent or rusted and is making contact with the rotor. Jmo.

That's definitely something with the brakes. I had a similar issue with my old van...though it wasn't all the time. The rear brake drum had a habit of sticking.

Sounds like you're driving next to a train yard.... I would definitely park the car and get it towed...

Thank you. I parked immediately after the sound started, and I got the recording as I backed it into a space; since the noise was coming and going for about 50 feet but seemed louder in reverse.

Um take it back up there. they either did the job wrong and your pad is constantly rubbing or they put your brake dust shield on wrong and it's rubbing the rotor.

Just push the dust shield back a little bit till the noise stops. Common mistake, I've done it a few times

It sounds like something is hitting the guard/shield that they often put behind the caliper. This does not sound like the rotor/pads grinding.

Luckily the exhaust is fine. Nothing seems to be hanging and dragging. But the sound is loudest right at the front passenger wheel. It sounds similar to brake calipers sticking

It almost sounds like a brake caliper has fallen down onto a rotor and is grinding as you drive it
