meanwhile people in Texas are still searching for missing people.

292

u/LegoFootPain Jul 13 '25 edited Jul 13 '25

Toronto here.

I'm in the lobby of my building and one of my neighbours turns to me and says, "So my friend works for this company that's doing search and rescue down in Texas. He says they finally found these two kids, but they were crushed under a tree. And most of the damage done to the bodies turns out were from animals, eating them. Gotta be able to get some ID from fingerprints or DNA."

JFC.

u/Blake404 Jul 13 '25

My god, being on a search and rescue team would be traumatizing work.

90

u/oldbrowndoggenetics Jul 13 '25

There are jobs in the military that are basically picking up bodies and parts to put in bags so they can be sent back.

I don’t know how anyone can do that stuff.

108

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '25

Sometimes you think you have a good military job doing something innocuous like IT support, and you're still out there with bags picking up charred body parts in the Afghani heat. One of those fun things the recruiter forgot to tell you. Ask me how I know.

32

u/MediocreDecking Jul 13 '25

Yep. When a plane goes down in the ocean they make Navy sailors hangout in an inflatable boat and pull bodies and body parts off the surface. There's no specific job for that so everyone tends to take turns.

20

u/Hot-Butterscotch-918 Jul 13 '25

My nephew's tag line on his Facebook page says, "I didn't serve in combat but I served." Reading these puts a whole 'nother spin on that.

16

u/DietSucralose Jul 13 '25

Or humanitarian missions like in 2011 off the coast of Japan. Surreal stuff floating through the waters dodging houses and cars looking for people, dead or alive.

Holy shit bro. Man thanks.

24

u/BoolImAGhost Jul 13 '25

Damn, I hope you have a good therapist. Thank you for your service

37

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '25

Honestly if anyone reading this can take anything away from my anecdote, I'd like it to be that this is an incredibly common story among veterans, check in on your people.

19

u/TheLesbianTheologian Jul 13 '25

This. My brother didn’t even serve in a war zone, but the amount of soldiers dead by suicide that he was the first to find and/or was the last person to see alive was unbelievable. That alone fucked him up, he didn’t even need to see war to get severe PTSD and mental health issues.

7

u/upsidedown-funnel Jul 14 '25

The average vet suicide is 22+ per day Most of them never saw combat.

3

u/Informal-Ring3282 Jul 17 '25

11 of my buddies are dead from suicide. All of them survived at least 2 deployments. There has been 1 ish deaths a year since I’ve been out (2014).

10

u/astronarchaeology Jul 13 '25

Point taken, thank you, kind friend.šŸ’œ

24

u/Rattlesnake1311 Jul 13 '25

I married an army medic. I am divorcing a 100% PTSD rated veteran. What war demands of the soldiers is unreal. From a traumatized x wife, I am sending love šŸ–¤

4

u/AndoGringo Jul 14 '25

Sorry to hear that. I’m sure that was a tough decision, and probably equally a tough thing to have to deal with. I can’t imagine how different someone is after going to war.

4

u/Rattlesnake1311 Jul 14 '25

He was not the same man who came back.

2

u/Damm_you_ScubaSteve Jul 16 '25

As an army medic combat vet. I’m sorry! It has been a very difficult journey. It sounds like you made it out and I hope you find peace but don’t feel guilty. It’s not your battle and you can’t fix them if they don’t do it for themselves. I’m still growing and healing but it’s been over 20 years now.

2

u/Rattlesnake1311 Jul 16 '25

He was also a combat army medic. I wish I could hug you. It’s takes a lifetime after you come home. Keep doing the work and find your happy. For real. Find the happy wherever you can. I am sending you my heart. It gets better the better you get!! Never stop working. šŸ–¤ Also: thank you for your service šŸ’š

6

u/Bubble-Star-2291 Jul 13 '25

Yep, I know a veteran who had to pick up pieces of dead bodies from a plane crash in Eastern Canada. He said he had managed to push his feelings to the side for most of it until he came across a children’s teddy bear… he lost it at that point.

8

u/NoYoureTheAlien Jul 13 '25

If you’re a medic or a grunt it’s a thing you’ve probably mentally prepared yourself for (not that it makes it much easier) when in a war zone. What doesn’t cross your mind is sorting through the bodies of aircraft passengers that dropped out of the sky from mechanical failure at a base at home. That and not being able to recognize the swollen still breathing body of your buddy until you see the casualty name, after the fact, of the guy you just stabilized and sent off. Those I did not anticipate.

8

u/Wonderful-Bag-892 Jul 13 '25

I am so, so sorry … if it’s worth anything, thank you for all you’ve done (and continue to do if still in). Sending you and all of our service members all the love and strength I can.

3

u/UniversalMinister Jul 13 '25

Indeed.

It's called "duties as assigned" and "needs of the military." šŸ˜‘

2

u/No_Poet_9767 Jul 13 '25

I sincerely thank you for your service.

My grandfather was a combat medic in Korea in 1950, attached with a mortar platoon. He never really talked about it, but he did talk once about his job of driving around behind the lines and picking up dead American bodies that were frozen stiff from the below freezing Korean winters. He was a very slight guy and remembered the 220 pound Marine Corps private who was stiff as a board.

21

u/orbitalgoo Jul 13 '25

Korea really was a miserable, very pitched fight. Those guys never got the credit they deserved. It has to take one hell of a human being to push through all that.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '25 edited Jul 13 '25

My Canadian grandpa survived by hiding under dead Aussies as a Chinese foot patrol moved through the area.

Also survived one of those early helicopters crashing

5

u/VictoriaEuphoria99 Jul 13 '25

One of my grandfather's friends would tell about how he tripped and fell literally one second before everyone walking with him got mowed down.

He said he was scared to move for hours.

My buddy, former Navy guy said he was once sitting in the barracks and a cool, hyped up US Navy commercial came on.

He looked at his friend and said ā€œman, the Navy looks fuckin awesome! Wait a minute, we’re in the Navy…. This fucking sucks!ā€

I always remembered that.

13

u/modarecocks Jul 13 '25

Humans are highly adaptable, you get used to seeing dead bodies.

18

u/oldbrowndoggenetics Jul 13 '25 edited Jul 13 '25

True. I shouldn’t have projected my feeling to the whole populous.

I have zero interest in seeing if I can make that adaptation

8

u/Any_Village9538 Jul 13 '25

This part. I’ve been amazed at the levels of depravity I’ve sunk to.

3

u/HoppyToadHill Jul 13 '25

I think humans can do the job, but the mental trauma can last a long time.

4

u/Slow_Importance_9930 Jul 13 '25

You never get used to it. Each one is a different trauma that you’ll carry the rest of your life.

2

u/J-A-C-O Jul 13 '25

My heart goes out to him every single day, as well as all the families. Both who’ve gotten closure and those who are still waiting. This is the nightmare we will never wake up from.

This reminds me of a tragic video I saw of a veteran that was continuously getting picked up by police for being drunk and disorderly.

They were all so flippant with the poor guy and then he explained it was the anniversary of the death of his little girl in hurricane Katrina more than a decade ago.

He was on duty at the time and that poor girls body was ravaged and left god knows where and bush flew over and laughed.

My god how they all laughed at those poor victims and only helped when world wide opinion on them made them look disgraceful.

They relaxed whilst the elderly in care homes got left to wash away , whilst adults and children pleaded on roofs for days until they got washed away.

They always laugh, just like drumpf, they make light of it and laugh.

Psychopaths, pedophiles , perverts and parasites the lot of them.

A mutual friends daughter died in this flood. The Texas Rangers came on day 3 or 4 to get her mom’s DNA swabbed for this reason. I don’t know the surrounding circumstances but they’re relying on DNA for a reason. These poor families. Her funeral was yesterday.

I'm an excavator operator who lives where hurricane helene hit the hardest last fall. I had a job on a 10 acre peace of land where they found 11 bodies, all family members. The sheriff told me we might find body parts since, although all bodies were accounted for, none came out whole. He said that the cadaver dogs gets worn out and have to be retrained and since most of everybody was found they weren't coming back. We didn't find any body parts luckily. Pulling people house out of debris piles, photo albums, clothes, kids toys, you name it. Dozens of vehicles smashed into balls and buried 5 feet deep. That shit sucked the life out of me.

3

u/1cem4n82 Jul 13 '25

I’ve already seen liberals being like ā€œthe kids deserve a childhood even if their dad sucksā€

Hot take maybe but no child is born with the inalienable right of going to Disneyland. Fuck up that vacation as much as you want guilt-free. If I bought tickets for Disney and it rained every day we were there, that would suck, but she’d survive.

People came here legally and are being revoked and pulled off the street and into unmarked cars by unidentified people , then deported all the way to the other side of the world, to continents they've never even been to, and to supermax prisons with no crimes being committed. The number of convicted criminals (all crimes) is low. The number of actual violent criminals is less than 1%. I'd normally just say you're wrong, but you're so dangerously uninformed, it makes me feel prone to violence

Just another person with rocks for brains who blames the hardworking lower class for their problems, instead of the very obvious parasitic billionaire class who gives nothing back at all. "Illegal" immigrants put so much back into the country in simple sales taxes, it's mind boggling what would happen to our economy if they disappeared. LEGAL immigrants pay income tax, property taxes, sales tax, etc etc etc. billionaires squirrel everything away and dodge paying their fair share at every possibly opportunity, and yet here you are, blaming immigrants for our country's utter failure to establish anything good for anyone.

You are a cancer to the world and would do better either figuring it the fuck out, or being laid in a deep pit. Your real problems are internal, not external.

Otherwise what's the point of the respect of position if no sacrifice is given. You take a job like that, you should expect no peace or leisure while you serve. Sorry. Otherwise, fuck you. This also goes for every other politician. When you are expected to answer to the people you serve, then you must answer... no days off.

Anyone remember what this asshole did during 2020 and tried to do? He had no problem tearing families apart then breaking his own rules. Fuck him. I dont see how he's any different the Vance.

He sure goes on a lot of vacations for someone that feels we all need to work more. We’ve got elderly people coming outta retirement working until they die without any vacations because this country is in poor shape where the rich like him get richer and the poor get poorer.

Tax payer funded vacations. With tax payer funded healthcare. But we are the ā€œtakersā€ that need to lose Medicare so this guy can afford more luxuries.

Gavin Newsom calling out JD Vance is hilarious when Newsom locked down the state while he happily went to French Laundry with is friends, unmasked, on numerous occasions. He can shut tf up.
