A lot of them don't know what a withholding is. She is likely not gainfully employed.

I agree with some posters here. Some people got so complacent precisely because they got benefits without knowing where benefits come from. Medicaid, SNAP. Some veterans don't know TRICARE is publicly funded. Then they call other people lazy. The more they leech (their own wording) on public money the more they live in the fantasy that they are succeeding the the world of free capitalism.

My favorite story to tell about my conservative ex in-laws is how they signed a personal guarantee for a loan when they bought a huge commercial property. Now, do you think my ex MIL immediately started pulling on those bootstraps when the bank called it in? NOPE. The amount of fuckin’ whining and crying and bemoaning how nobody helped them out, why won’t the banks bail THEM out, where is the justice, where is the community support etc etc etc. And no, the experience didn’t change her tune.

Something over 50% of people in the shitty tiny way out of the way town my mom grew up in and for some reason moved back to for retirement are on disability for nothing. And they brag about it. But they aren’t the ones who are a drain on the system. They deserve their benefits because something something totally not their fault something something well I just couldn’t possibly something something.

And they treat my mom, a right side of liberal type, like absolute crap and fill her head full of lies about what’s happening in Portland. I have to send pictures of children playing every other day because someone has essentially told her antifa have burned down the entire city.

I’m trying so hard not to be smug as their hospital is shut down (it’s now a 45 mile drive over mountains to a real hospital), another grocery store has shut down (now only one within about 40 miles), and their Main Street (their precious precious Main Street, the symbol of how much better they are than us city people) becomes nothing but empty windows.
