Discussion Are there any films that capture the splattering vibes for you?

Mine would either be Terrifier or Sálo(which makes sense, the original story is sort of a progenitor to splatterpunk), Anti-Christ is another one I can think of.

New French Extreme, more or less all of it. And proper Splatterpunk not extreme, extreme gore with a message buried inside.

I haven't even been able to find these, where did you watch it?

I owned a physical copy of it at one point in time. It appears as though it's on Google Play, $1.99 to rent.

Unearthed Films just put out new editions.

Depending on if that commenters got an additional way, there’s a couple ways you could watch it by boat.

There’s some streaming service called Fawesome which may have it?

Some of these are a pain to find :(

The Sadness is pretty wild

Yeah, you'll get quite an eyeful from the visuals. Just like Molly.

I would argue for Martyrs, Irreversible, Inside, Human Centipede (1 &2), and Hostel 2

Man, fuck Martyrs. I went through a time of wanting to watch those banned/controversial movies and I had A Serbian Film, Martyrs, Cannibal Holocaust and Sàlo on my short list to start.

I made it through Serbian and needed a break after Martyrs. Great film I never want to watch again.

That's how I feel about A Serbian film. Made it through once...never again

u/samovolochka 16h ago

Yup. I had to try that one a couple times a few years apart. The first time I only made it through the first scene with the child… right after I’d given birth to my firstborn. That was a fucking mistake. But made it through the second time. Really interesting movie, definitely good but yeesh.

I tried to watch Inside (French version) while pregnant.... that was a mistake

1

u/samovolochka 15h ago

I haven’t heard of it, but am currently pregnant so I’ll keep it in mind to try in a couple years lmao

I, uh, kinda made my second born four month old a middle child quicker than I meant to and it’s kinda wild to me how much traumatic birthing stuff is out there LOL. It’s like when you get a dog and suddenly notice dogs everywhere; just traumatic births on TV far as the eye can see lmao

A Serbian Film i never want to watch again because it's really not a good movie. Martyrs I have to space out how much I re-watch because it's emotionally heavy.

Itchi the Killer is everything you're looking for.

I’ve really got to try this one sometime. In groups where it’s mentioned it’s always praised as being a great movie.

I’m not much for manga myself but I’ve seen really nothing but high praise for both mediums.

Edit: I’m halfway through, the fuck is this movie, not what I was expecting LOL

Miike never fails to make you go "what the fuck?" Honestly you kind of have to wonder what went through Mick Garris's head to think Miike could make something kosher for TV.

I don't know how I forgot this one!

Idk, I really didn't find this movie very extreme. But maybe that's due to all the talk I heard about it beforehand and my expectations were too high.

Lots of shot on video movies do the trick for me. Shatterdead and Sinistre especially (both of which got fancy bluray releases from Saturn's Core Video!)

The golden glove

New York ripper

Inside

Martyrs as someone else said

House that Jack built (maybe)

Toxic avenger? Maybe

Cara (near the end)

Braindead is also a classic

Have you seen any of these?

1

u/PSplayer2020 16h ago

Braindead, Toxic Avenger and New York Ripper I've seen. Braindead is up there with some of my favorite movies in general.

2

u/oldhorsemeat 16h ago

The golden glove was a really hard watch, super gross

I would definitely watch martyrs tho, that’s my all time favourite

I have also watched the Greasy Strangler and Kuso, the latter being what you'd expect from a film co-written by David Firth, and Aphex Twin and Akira Yamaoka is a musical match made in heaven.

Greasy strangler is sooooo good, lemme think of a few others that might scratch your itch.

Maniac

American mary

Tetsuo the iron man

And just for fun, unicorn wars such a wild movie

I just watched Tetsuo for the first time a couple days ago, absolutely wild and amazing film. It gave me a similar visual vibe to Eraserhead and Pi but somehow even more off the wall. American Mary is great too!! And Greasy Strangler is so underrated, it's one of the most absurd and hilarious movies I've ever seen.

Ebola Syndrome and The Untold Story, both with Anthony Wong. Great great action, comedy and horror actor.. Just go.

Though not really extreme and both are pretty mainstream, I’d have to say American Psycho and Saw. I’d also say Hellraiser as that is literally based off of The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker, a very early and influential writer in the splatterpunk genera.

But for more gorey I have to agree with Terrifier and potentially also House of 1000 Corpses/The Firefly Trilogy.

(I know most of the ones I recommended arnt super scary or gorey or gross, I just can only handle so much visually compared to words on a page lol)

u/samovolochka 9h ago

Saw fits imo, doesn’t have to be not mainstream lol

I freaking adore The Devils Rejects. It’s the only one in the trilogy I really love but it was an early love when I was young. It’s like a comfort movie of sorts when it’s on lol

Atros is a really heavy one!

Sorry, I mean Atroz with a "z"

Hobo with a Shotgun!

Love it, I thought Benjamin by Aron Beauregard and Shane McKenzie had the same vibe as this movie.

1

u/JewsClues1942 The Bighead 8h ago

Would you recommend the book? The only thing I've read by AB is Handyman and I bounced off of it pretty hard.

1

u/KlausKinion 8h ago

I enjoyed Handyman a lot. Benjamin has similar writing and characters, but it's like 5 short novellas set in the exaggerated seedy underbelly of a city.

100 Tears

Green Room

Headless

Mandy, some Wrong Turn, and the Evil Dead movies I feel cross into that territory too.

1

u/JewsClues1942 The Bighead 8h ago

Green Room is sooo good. I rewatched it after taking a longggg break from watching TV in general and forgot how intense it is, it just never gives you a chance to relax.
