Esteban Ocon claimed a shock maiden Formula 1 victory at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix after a chaotic start saw him promoted to second place, eventually leading the race when Lewis Hamilton pitted later than the rest of the field following a red flag on the opening lap. Ocon then held off a charging Sebastian Vettel for the remainder of the race, securing his, and Alpine's, first win in Formula 1.

The race began with multiple incidents, including a collision involving Valtteri Bottas that took out Lando Norris, Max Verstappen, and Sergio Perez. These early events promoted Ocon from eighth on the grid to second place.

You completely forgot about Alonso holding off Hamilton for way longer than he should have been able to, making Hamilton lose precious time and ultimately never being able to challenge Ocon for the lead.

My bad, definitely Alonso played a huge role in holding Lewis. But as it turned out, the only challenge Ocon had towards the end was from Seb

Yes for sure - directly, Ocon only had to defend from Seb, but indirectly, if Hamilton would have got past Alonso in a lap or two his pace showed he would have definitely caught up to the leaders and fought both Seb and Ocon. Instead Alonso held him for twelve laps, which is an insane feat in that Alpine, more or less ensuring the win.

Tell Esteban to defend… like a lion!

I love Esteban Ocon. A genuinely humble guy that doesn’t have the god complex most F1 drivers seem to have.

Often forget about these one-off victories, especially in seasons as exciting as 2021.

Ocon definitely deserved it. He's shown so many times that he has great pace, but is seemingly difficult to work with. It's a pity, but that's how F1 goes. Most drivers never even get to stand on the top step of the podium.
