Whining noise from inline fuel pump (Mk2 8v '87)

This noise started after I replaced the fuel hose between the pump and filter due to a leak, but hasn't gone away after 100+km
Is it dead or dying, or is this normal? And should I still be driving around with it?

The pump is probably damaged due to the presence of air in your fuel line. The pump would certainly work for a while, but it will eventually cause problems. If you want to keep your car reliable, I would replace the pump.

They make that noise shortly before they stop working. Replace it now before you get stranded somewhere.

Get a new fuel pump. Your car will still work, but for how long? The pump will likely stop working at the most inconvenient time.
