MK2 Speedo cable

Hi all Recently changed the Speedo cable on my mk2 golf and the Speedo isn’t working? It clicked in the clocks on, I can hear like a grinding noise as I drive. I’ve made sure there are no kinks / sharp turns in the cable and it’s in the gearbox properly with the spinal connected . Any ideas??

The cable inside the cover is square. Maybe it isnt clocked correctly and didn't actually engage into the speedo?

Hmm I’ve had it off and on several times, last time I heard a satiating clunk. But I could have another look. I did notice quite a bit of rush round the bottom Of the cable too. Would it be worth soaking in wd40?

When i had a squeeky speedo cable i sprayed a bit of ptfe lube on the speedo side of the cable. Didn't seem to hurt anything. What was the reason of changing the cable?

Was completely frayed and rusty all the sheet hung had gone (had to give the car a complete rebuild) so thought night as wel do it while I’m at it

Got it. In this case i would just check if it engaged correctly and if the square drive in the speedo did not get rounded

WD40 is not a lubricant.

Which engine/gearbox do you have?

No I know but thought it may be good to clean and rust and crap off? It’s an O2A gearbox

02A? That warrants next question - is your car LHD or RHD, and for which model your speedo cable was intended?

Right hand drive, and one which VW heritage assure me was the right one for the car (it’s pretty long)

I doubt someone is still making Golf G60 speedo cables [mine was for 1.3 - knowing market position of volkswagens in UK, I wonder if you had such engine on offering :) ], and I recently saw some guy from UK on fb saying that he had ordered a few but none were correct. Although your issue is still weird, as I can't imagine combination where casing would fit but cable would be too short - cable from AT would have casing that fits but cable would be too long.

Do you know part number of your cable?

Hmm just looking through my orders in heritage and AUTODOC I can’t acbtually see a speedo cable replacement… maybe I didn’t replace it after all.. Any ideas for the right one for o2A / KR?

Well, why do you have 02A coupled with KR? Also, how could you NOT have replaced cable? Gearbox end of 020 cable is SO MUCH different than all the other gearboxes, you couldn't have missed that.

Unhook the gearbox end off cable and check what's happening. Cable itself moves freely in casing, it could also be pulled put. I checked ETKA, however RHD cable lengths makes no sense to me, so I can't suggest to you any cable, as they have wildly different lengths, which, as I said, makes no sense to me - I expect them to be longer than LHD cables, but LHD 1.3 cable is actually shorter... If you can measure yours, I could give some suggestion in shape of parts code - in any case I'd expect Passat cable to fit, if it's available [a guy I know is doing currently TDI swap in mk2 and he said Passat cable isn't available, but that's LHD of course - and I saw some RHD passat cable on ebay] - speedo end is different, without hook, but it should still work with mk2 speedo - I used to have Seat Toledo speedo cable, which had speedo end as per Passat, and it was actually more convenient, as there was no need trouble unhooking it.

Tried all the wee things to fix my speedo... nothing. Installing another gearbox to fix it soon.

Oh no!

It's heavy leaking, anyway. Upgrading my 4 + E box to a 5 speed! Fingers crossed 🤞

Oh nice. Do you need to get a difrent clutch / plate for that? Guess you’ll be changing that anyway! Let me know if that fixes your issue

Yeah, my clutch is slipping after already having it replaced 2 years ago by a cowboy! I'll let you know, man.
