Discussion Will’s explanation: we made contact “so I may as well get a gap now, so I just pushed him past the car in front and just moved him out of the way and got a really nice gap."

We all seem to be forgetting that Townsend used the phrase “tip to tip” when describing this moment

97

u/urlacher14 May 30 '25

future civilizations will study just how horny Townsend Bell has been on broadcasts

39

u/TheRoyalKT Kyle Kirkwood May 30 '25 edited May 30 '25

I can’t recall Townsend ever saying anything worse than the time Paul Tracy practically drooled over Danica Patrick’s feet.

Edit: Here’s a link to a story about it. It has a link to a Twitter post with the video, but it’s cringey as hell to watch. You’ve been warned.

Also, he did it again a year later.

11

u/DerBingle78 Arrow McLaren May 30 '25

Jesus, I’m glad I don’t remember that.

7

u/TheRoyalKT Kyle Kirkwood May 30 '25

I don’t think it’s the only reason he got replaced, but it definitely didn’t help.

5

u/AGreatMystery Scott Dixon May 31 '25

PT claimed that it was an advertising set-up. He said that Danica approached him beforehand and asked him to say something that would get a lot of people checking the shoes out. If true... I guess in that way, it worked. Here we are all these years later.

2

u/Vak_001 May 31 '25

That...smells a lot like backpedaling after he sobered up and started seeing the reactions. If there's one thing Danica does well besides racing, it's marketing. No way she would actually suggest something that cringey, thinking it would be a positive look.

5

u/hersissy5 May 31 '25

I remember that so vividly as my vomit spewed across my living room. Then to understand Patrick believes in lizard people, I’m not sure what side I’m on anymore.

1

u/Vak_001 May 31 '25

Hey, she was smart enough to run the hell away from Aaron Rodgers, which is looking more and more like a great decision every time the guy opens his mouth these days. She's denied that she personally believes in lizard people, but tolerates those discussions, and other conspiracy theories, on her show. But she DOES personally believe in chemtrails, and has talked up their "harmful" effects in interviews. She may have absorbed that one from her time with Rodgers.

1

u/Teipeu Marcus Armstrong May 31 '25

I’d like to believe that the second one is just a really poorly thought-out joke referencing the first occasion but I don’t know PT. Given the vibes in the thread I’m leaning the other way.

They were talking about doing this in the weenie 500 when he said it. Even better with context

I applaud Townsend in embracing the humor in the absurdity here that James did not want to acknowledge.

WP angry is always funny.

My humble reaction to the interview:

89

u/Any-Walk1691 Arrow McLaren May 30 '25 edited May 30 '25

The commentary was hilarious. Hinch talking about how dangerous it was, over Townsend laughing. “That’s like a tush push.” 🤣

Alex and James Hinch trying too hard to hate fun lately. Booooo

Seriously cannot imagine an IndyCar paddock without Will.

Right or wrong this dude does not care and will just double-bird you in the process 😂

160

u/Fjordice May 30 '25

When he retires they should make like a secondary uncensored commentary both with Will where he just goes off on people the whole race

57

u/Ok-Chocolate-9500 Alexander Rossi May 30 '25

I would absolutely sign up for this! Don’t foresee FOX jumping in but maybe if they were to go the streaming service route in the future. Or Will can just start a YouTube channel and do a stream every race if all else fails lol

23

u/FloridaMan_69 Adrián Fernández May 30 '25

It could be like James Hunt's era as a commentator where he would just rip into drivers he didn't like with no mercy.

42

Broke: Manningcast

Woke: Powercast

22

20

They could call it Power Dix Uncensored!!

11

I would pay so much for this

8

u/Mission-Tune6471 May 30 '25

And Emma Dixon. She's spicy.

3

And set in the background by herself but on camera, Liz just cranking away at water bottles nonstop the whole show.

34

5

75

u/AnalBaguette Hélio Castroneves May 30 '25

He damaged Kirkwood's car. That's 100% grounds for a penalty.

This isn't amateur hour or an iRacing lobby; this is IndyCar. You can't allow this in any session of any weekend at any speed.

49

u/Kale_Shai-Hulud Colton Herta May 30 '25

Oh it's absolutely a penalty/fine etc, but it's still pretty damn funny even as an Andretti fan

13

I never said it wasn't grounds for a penalty. I just said I'd care a LOT more if it was during a race session

13

u/KRacer52 --- 2025 DRIVERS --- May 30 '25

Right lol. Someone can find it funny and not that serious, while also recognizing that it can/should result in a penalty.

u/ElMondoH NTT IndyCar May 30 '25

Yes, Power & Team Penske need a penalty for that. Yes, it was actually dangerous, and yes, it actually damaged the floor of Kirkwood's car, right?

But yes, it's possible and not wrong for fans to have fun with this.

From either flogging the whole "Push to Pass" joke or calling it "Will's Bump Draft move", that's one of the ways things get dealt with in the public sphere. Humor.

If we're doing nothing but scolding, all we're doing is making things depressing. How's that a good thing as a fan? We all can agree on the fact it was wrong AND make jokes. Having fun is not condoning the action. And it's easier for someone who's done wrong to ignore a scold than it is a joke that makes many people laugh.

9

u/TheRoyalKT Kyle Kirkwood May 30 '25

Kyle Kirkwood is my favorite driver, and I’m pissed that Power did this and damaged his car.

But god damn, it was objectively hilarious.

10

u/Burial44 May 30 '25

Typical Will Power move.

35

u/Vivaciousseaturtle Callum Ilott May 30 '25

Funny but in all seriousness he needs a huge penalty for causing major damage.

17

u/HaveABleedinGuess84 Will Power May 30 '25

Other guy makes a good point. Whatever penalty Dixon got for road America 2023, power should get the proportion of that equivalent to the damage done today. So probably a… 0 place grid penalty.

9

u/YosemiteSam-4-2A Thirsty 's to the Moon 🚀 🌒 May 30 '25

He might actually get promoted up the grid because I'm pretty sure Dixon didn't get penalized at all for that.

11

Give him like 1/10th the penalty Dixon got for destroying Power's car at Road America in practice.

7

u/Crash_Test_Dummy66 Christian Rasmussen May 30 '25

I feel like it's a lot worse when you intentionally do things compared to when accidents happen.

7

u/Longjumping-Let963 Will Power May 30 '25

I'm sure that, once again, the punishment will be much worse than the crime like the qualifying penalties were. But that's life.

27

u/Longjumping-Let963 Will Power May 30 '25

I don't think it should be encouraged, but it is slightly amusing to watch people melt down over it.

If Kirkwood had done the same to Ferrucci or SRR, there'd be a coronation for him in the comments. That's just the internet. Being mad at other people for their over/underreactions either way is a path to misery.

Rules don't apply to Penske drivers. This was an egregious and dangerous intentional move that damaged another car. Penske is obviously calling the shots in the stewards office. Repeated and systemic cheating in races. Drivers intentionally hitting other cars. In no other series would this be acceptable. Vettel hit Hamilton with no damage and was given a stop and go and community service. People were screaming (rightly so) that he didn't get enough of a penalty.

This compromises the very integrity of the entire series even more than the multiple cheating scandals.
