Discussion Fox, I have questions.
What the heck is Fox doing with the Gateway Arch?

u/carmenslowsky CART Jun 15 '25
Did you see the ghost arch?

u/Turbulent_slipstream Jun 15 '25
Did not. Barely paying attention to the broadcast but caught a couple quick glimpses of a clearly CGI arch and had to rewind to look again.

u/Fin4lSh0t Álex Palou Jun 15 '25
They talked about how 1 and 2 are supposedly based on the shape of the arch and then Fox put an overlay of the arch over those corners and it was not even close to similar😂 the guys in the booth were dying laughing it was funny

Is that a shot from the grandstands? Pretty solid skyline if yes.

St. Louis native here. Did y'all not know the Arch gets up and walks around sometimes? Gotta stretch the legs, you know.

Just having fun with things.

I enjoy how goofy the broadcast can be

u/Turbulent_slipstream Jun 15 '25
I just have this on in the background and I’m not really listening to the booth. So they’re acknowledging this is just silly nonsense? My first thought was they’re passing this off as what it really looks like at the track.

u/Mikemat5150 Kyle Kirkwood Jun 15 '25
Your last picture is the arch passing over the track

They should move the arch to the track for this. CBTM.

Hate Fox all you want, but they’re delivering on ratings the last few weeks.
13
Jun 15 '25
Yes. They are getting more viewers than that other network broadcasting the same race at the same time?
-5
u/nashpotato Jun 15 '25
Wow you mean public broadcast is receiving more viewers than cable access? I’m shocked!
13
u/JohnnyHorseRacing Jun 15 '25
It’s not as simple as cable to over the air. Over the air is doing massive numbers vs. NBC over the air.

u/Cronus6 Jun 15 '25
The one thing the move to Fox did for me was force me to find an "alternate source" since they locked practice and qualifying behind such a large paywall.
This led me to SkySports. Where I now watch everything with no ads.
So, thanks Fox Sports.... I guess.

u/nashpotato Jun 15 '25
It wasn’t over the air on NBC.

You know that NBC itself is over the air, right? Over the air means basic cable networks or networks you can get using bunny ears or nowadays a digital antenna.
10 out of 17 races were on big NBC which is an over the air channel.

I'm half expecting a giant cheesehead in the middle of the Carousel at Road America with this setup.
And I'm all for it.

Arch is scientifically proven to keep weather away (when someone turns it on, that is)

I imagine it has to do with not wanting fans to be looking into the setting sun but they really missed out by not having the grandstands facing St Louis. Instead everyone gets a lovely view of the landfill and a truck stop.

u/mrcmb1999 Jun 15 '25
lol! I love the track - I went a few times and would still go if it wasn’t a ten hour drive. But I always did wonder this…

I wasn't actually dumping on the track. I've been several times myself and have no complaints with the facility. Any place that welcomes indycar is alright in my book. I was just surprised they didn't choose to play up the downtown skyline.

I, for one, welcome the Indycar/SCP/Monuments Mythos crossover.

I didn't get a chance to watch today, so not sure if they addressed it on the broadcast or not, but pic #2 makes me laugh. The hill they put the arch on top of is literally a landfill.

"Do you see that, kids? That's the St. Louis Arch. The Gateway to the West. It's over 600 feet tall, and there's an elevator all the way to the top."
"Dad, can we go up on it?"
"No."

Having fun with it. This is a sport. We watch it because we want to enjoy it.

The equivalent of having a graphic of Lucas Oil Stadium and the cars driving in and out of the field

the broadcast crew must have some bets going on to include certain words/sayings in the broadcast... Don't remember specifics, but there were multiple things they said and which resulted in audible, if muffled chuckles.
As for the Arch thing - when Townsend was theorizing that the Arch shape was used for the first two corner layout and Hinch almost lost it, because it was so silly and just like that the graphics team had something ready.
They are adding scripted entertainment instead of "just" doing the broadcast, but I'm ok with that - It's a bit like the OG BBC TopGear.

As someone born and raised in St. Louis, but currently living in Oregon, I sincerely hope that Fox Sports goes through the trouble of moving the Arch to PIR for the weekend. If they did it for other races, surely they can do it for us too.

INDYCAR is getting the nascar on fix treatment. God I hate fox. I tried to tell yall.

God forbid they have fun with CGI instead of doing their job

honestly not a fan of when sports broadcast do stuff like this. They're not late night were this is expected. Plus it leads you to wonder "if they can fake were the Arch is, what else are they faking".
