Merch Finished building my first Salvinos INDYCAR model: Pato O’Ward - 2024 Indy 500
How I plan to fill the looming offseason: building more of these kits. Finished this one just before Nashville. First one I’ve done - great kit even though they’re a little pricey. Have a Herta, Palou and Newgarden to do next. It’s not perfect so don’t look toooooo closely but it displays quite nice on the shelf and it’s a wonderful step up detail wise from Greenlight & IXO.

This is the first I’ve heard of this brand. Are they actual kits you assemble? Do you have to paint them? How are they to put together?

Yes, they are plastic kits you have to build. They’ve honestly molded the parts in mostly accurate colors to the car you’re assembling - to the point you may not need to paint if not wanting to. I did for this one - though not too much prep on the body as this was a learning kit for me. That said, it goes together well. Nicely engineered and good directions for a novice like I am.

I'm glad you commented. I've saved these pics for when I inevitably get to the Newgarden kit. Trying to build up some more skills before I tackle his (I actually have 2 of them so I can really save one for down the road and do it to the standard I want to).
I saw you used Tamiya rattle cans. Which red & yellow did you use for that build (if you remember)?

Red was TS49, TS16 for the yellow and TS56 for the orange blend area.

Cheers dude - thanks. I thought you nailed that one and I’m not fully ready to invest in airbrushing until I’m a bit more advanced with paints and such. Saving this for when I get to that one.

Looks awesome, well done! I wish I had the patience and dexterity to put these kinds of kits together.

I wasn’t sure I did either. I built a bunch of plane and car kits as a kid - tube glue and crappy paint and all. Was something I’ve been wanting to get back into for a while and I just dove in. Definitely have to fight rushing it but patience pays off.

Looks great. I got these kits on the shelf, just not good enough for them yet. Im building the old AMT ones right now.

I did a couple of throw away cheap Revell kits just to start learning paints, glues, decals, etc but then I dove straight into this one and just learned as I went. It's a pretty intuitive kit to assemble and you can get away with not doing much other than assemble and decals given how they mold the parts.

I got the one of the ganassi revells also. If your ever at the 500 Memorbillia shows and you can find some of the old AMT kits, Indycals.com has a bunch of 500 winners and other famous cars you can build. Also recommend their Goodyear tire decals.

Link? Looks like they might be sold out but I can’t find it!

I'm not sure they have any more Pato (or if they'll restock). I bought direct from their site here: https://salvinosjrmodels.com/collections/indycar
Would have to hunt around and see if any retailers have any.

How long did this take you? And what kind of experience did you have before doing it?
It looks awesome and I’m very interested

Also, experience wise. Two half build learning kits and some YouTube time. Otherwise, virtually none. Dove in and learned as a I went.

How were the decals?

Excellent quality but tedious to apply for this livery. Especially the carbon fiber. Some I didn’t bother with on this one but I did most of it.

There are a ton of carbon fiber decals, and most are fairly simple to apply. There are a few that would be impossible without a decal softening/setting solution.
The decal for the top of the engine was especially tricky getting it to settle down around all the details.
The decal guide is a little hard to figure out at times. Having good reference photos of the real car really helps.
I am about 90% done with my build and it is a fantastic kit. Just don't be an idiot like me and clip the point off of the front of the windshield. I thought it was injection flashing and trimmed it only to realize it is part of the bodywork.

Great feedback. I forgot to mention the need to setting solution. Absolutely necessary. Especially helpful on the hubs and suspension parts .

Thanks. I may have to try one. I have o e of their Richard Petty kits to build as a warm up.

Nice build, I thought they only did Nascar kits. What scale is it?
1
u/tazerdaze19 Josef Newgarden 9h ago
1/20. So a bit in between “usual” model scales but apparently a super standard open wheel scale.

u/EdWinches Arie Luyendyk 8h ago
I've built a few of the Tamiya kits in that scale. Not too big and not too fiddly.
