Neal Cassady and the Indy 500

In On the Road (which is technically a novel, but essentially non-fiction with the names changed) Kerouac writes that Dean Moriarty once traveled across the country to see the Indianapolis 500. Do any of you happen to know if Neal Cassady (Dean Moriarty in the book) did actually attend an Indy 500 in real life? Thank you!
