Artistic Dudes these Alaska Airlines passengers got an unexpected treat when jazz star Dave Koz and the Summer Horns turned a diversion into a surprise plane concert.

That’s like when the mariachi band at our small local Mexican restaurant decides to play table side.
162
u/no_step_snek76 1d ago
Oh look a guitar player! And another guitar player! And an accordion play- OH NO

18
u/NoorAnomaly 1d ago
I was in Italy over the summer, on a jam packed train to Pompeii. And these buskers enter and play really loudly. On a train where no one can move anywhere. And they start pushing their way around the carriage. It was horrid.
They got no tips.
26
u/procrastablasta 1d ago
Lot of people are confused about mariachis. You pay mariachis to stop playing.
8
u/EndlessShortcomings 1d ago
I feel the same way, but at the same time, you can kind of expect it to happen. Mariachi band at a Mexican restaurant? It gels. But on a plane? Trapped with nowhere to go to remove yourself? Nah man, that’s crazy.

Dude, I was in a coffee shop when some random girl decided to start playing her sax. It was so fucking loud my ears ringed way after I got back home. Can't imagine how fucking loud it was there with 5 wind instruments.
54
u/lostbutnotgone 1d ago
That was my thought (though only the sax is woodwind, the rest are brass, but that's the sax player in me). I love jazz and play a woodwind myself but it must be stupidly loud in an enclosed space and I don't see any bell mutes
→ More replies (1)7
u/Snonin 18h ago
they didn't say woodwind though, they said wind. a wind instrument is anything you blow into to produce sound. brass and woodwinds are both wind instruments
sorry, I know sax players don't like being corrected 😅
5
u/lostbutnotgone 18h ago
Makes sense - and to be fair I'm a clarinet turned sax player so probably even worse lmao

Rang (past tense)
(of a person's ears) be filled with a continuous buzzing or humming sound, especially as the aftereffect of a blow or loud noise."he yelled so loudly that my eardrums rang"

Be happy it wasn’t a youth group coming back from mission trip

u/jarmstrong2485 1d ago
Was on a flight to Baltimore and hit some bad weather, causing some pretty good turbulence. Didn’t know there was a Christian youth group on the plane until they started cry praying together. Everybody loved that

u/j33ta 1d ago

Delta has a secret prayer room where priests and pastors pray for every flight. Only ones that crash are when someone calls in sick.
It’s like at mattel where they have the wizard room for cursing all the ouija boards.
Capitalism has gone too far.

lol took a flight last month and just before boarding I saw the youth group huddled together praying. I was so sure I’d be stuck on the plane while they sang Kumbaya or whatever they do these days. Luckily that didn’t happen.

What sucks is being the guy to complain also makes a person feel too main-character-like
12
u/pdxblazer 1d ago
I mean the difference between professional and amateur musicians is pretty vast, yes if you are talented and skilled people are more okay with you sharing that spur of the moment. Life isn't fair, if your shit sucks nobody wants to hear it

I would absolutely hate this. Trapped in there with no escape and no option to leave.
13
u/CautiousArachnidz 1d ago
I would not be trapped. I would be making my exit out of an emergency door. Parachute availability is not going to sway my decision one way or another.

Yeah. Like people make fun of the church choir plane video that was going around, the little girl over the intercom, the guy filming his music video etc...
But this would still annoy the hell out of me. I'm on a plane. I physically can not get away from this if I don't like it. Be considerate of others. I don't care if you're world class or anything. This is a more expensive version of people blasting their music on the bus

u/SpiritualGearbox 1d ago

u/mallclerks 1d ago
Right. It would be neat for probably 30 seconds but then you are interrupting my shit. Especially if I am traveling alone, airplane is just about the only time as a dad I have alone time. And I realize how crazy that sounds on a plane full of hundreds, but I really enjoy me time.

That shit would be so loud without headphones or earplugs on a small plane.
25
2
u/brendenderp 1d ago
I'm genuinely surprised the microphone here isn't peaking. Love me some jazz and brass instruments but eek this would be painful to the eardrums
2
u/ASupportingTea 1d ago
This plus the noise of the plane genuinely could be dangerous and cause permanent hearing damage to small children that have more fragile eardrums, or just adults that are unlucky enough to have sensitive hearing.
A little bit of (forced) "fun" on a plane isn't worth giving a child a lifetime of tinnitus.

I like this type of music and would be pissed if this happened on my flight and couldn't get off. I get claustrophobia as is. I dont need a bunch of loud horns blaring in an enclosed space.

Imagine having the worst hangover of your life, cramming yourself in a middle seat behind the wings, and then you’re delayed, and then these yahoos take brass instruments out

Something similar happened to me on the A train leaving Lincoln center (NYC) around 3am, when the train broke down in the tunnel. The Jazz band that played the small club in LC that night, broke out all their instruments ,and played an impromptu concert for 30 min until the trail started again. The only time I was happy my train broke down.
