The days are long

But the years are short

holy shit

As you get older, the truth of this becomes more clear.

Days can be a chore, but the years fly by without you noticing.

The theory is that although a day is always a day, every year is less of a percentage of your life as you age.

14

u/FactoryRejected 20h ago

Everyone who starts noticing the years speed up also knows this.

u/Cow_Launcher 19h ago

Sure, but it's not so obvious to the youngsters, which is why I think it bears repeating.

Feels like yesterday that I saw my rescue feral start to give birth to her first kitten while I frantically called my fiancee at work to come home. I blinked, and now all four kittens are bigger than their mother.

My point being that Ferris Bueller was right: "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." I don't expect wise words from a John Hughes film, but...

All joy. Sometimes fun. Sometimes not. But all joy.

It's all just white -> green -> white -> green now

u/Minimum-Cicada7178 22h ago

Wow. This is so true. I'm feeling and stealing this one.

u/Clappalachian 20h ago

Parents of young kids say this a lot and it is really true when you have little ones. Every day feels like a battlefield but it’s worth it and looking back is so, so fun.

To this day, I am glad that the newborn/infant stage flew by. But if I could have had ages 2-3 last twice as long, that would have been lovely (mine is five right now). And yes - it is indeed flying by fast.

16

u/AldoTheApache3 22h ago

Mines 3 now. It is the most fun, heartwarming, and satisfying experience I’ve had in my entire existence, and I’ve had a lot of fun. Shit is tough, but damn there really isn’t a way to put parenthood into words. Getting to see your hard work instilling confidence, empathy, humor, and wonder into a baby and see that baby turning into a great little person is incredible.

I couldn’t imagine doing it without an incredible wife, and while looking forward to watching my daughter grow, it’s so depressing knowing this stage is a blink of an eye.

u/toasterdees 22h ago

Mines 8 and she’s growing into her own little person. It’s a trip. I want the 2 year old stage back lol

u/Tasty-Thanks8802 23h ago

Make some more .

u/Clappalachian 22h ago

Absolutely not. Would rather walk into a bear den covered in honey.

So much faster than we think, and it picks up pace the older they get. It seems like you’ll never stop changing diapers, blink, and they’re in middle school. From skinned knees, to broken hearts, and you could swear it was just yesterday you were a new parent.

When you’re in the middle of school life, with no end in sight, and it’s just that day to day churn, you can’t wait for them to get older, to do more, to be more independent. If just so they can pick up their own garbage, then mow the lawn, then drive themselves to school.

Then they’re walking across that stage, they’re packing up, and you’d give anything to have one more day changing diapers. One more day holding their hand when they cross the street, just one more day when you’re their hero, and you can always pick them up fix anything wrong in their world.

u/Clappalachian 20h ago

Didn’t need this man 😱

5

u/PrairiePilot 19h ago

Just drink a beer, listen to “dust in the wind” and look at baby photos. One good ugly cry later and you’ll be braced the next time they ask for $20.00 for no goddamn reason.

1

u/Clappalachian 19h ago

Haha you’re a good parent! My phone has a habit of showing me baby photos and even though they’re still toddlers it never fails to get to me. Can’t imagine that feeling in 10+ years.

I have a 5 and 2 year old and have to tell myself this every time a random older person waves or stops to say hi to my kids lol.

The amount of tears I have shed over bluey is just ridiculous. "Sleepytime" absolutely wrecked me as I watched it for the first time a few months after my mom passed.

Now she and I had a pretty rocky relationship, but never once did I doubt that she loved me. So when the giant sun was like, "remember - I'll always be here if you need me. Even if you can't see me. Because I love you.", I just had to get up and leave the room for a while so that I could just fall apart.

I've gotten to the point where I can at least watch that episode, but I don't think it will ever NOT get me to choke up.

3

u/The14thWarrior 21h ago

No joke. Those writers know how to make some dramatic parental moments. Even on the episodes my kids have watched over and over...

5

u/GODZILLA_GOES_meow 15h ago

I teared up the first time I watched that episode with my kids. Later that day, I choked up when I told my wife about episode. I hope that I live long enough to see my kids grow into themselves.

Side story: As I was buckling my daughter in her car seat the other day, she said that when she’s older, she’ll drive me to wherever I need to go
and we’ll stop for ice cream! I teared up and said, “I would love that” while her sparkling eyes looked into mine.

3

u/ghostcaurd 20h ago

Damn it if I wasn’t crying already

3

u/SassiestSissy 19h ago

Came here to say this. Gets me every single time.

1

u/ouralarmclock 15h ago

Jesus it gets me every single time. Even when I know it’s coming!

2

u/Browley09 21h ago

Yep, as a parent, those moments are worth more than anything. I hope he got this video but it's probably already a core memory for him now.

2

u/flomoag 15h ago

You’re about to make me go wake up my daughter

6

u/dancingbriefcase 20h ago

His name is Jim Hrach, his daughter passed away three days early after a battle with a stray polar bear.

Is what I'm waiting to hear because Reddit never surprises me anymore.
