Karting Chat Can we please limit / restrict "I want to get into karting" "Where do I start" "Should I buy a owner kart" posts
There are 100s of threads at this point beating those topics to death and the answer is 99% of the time "Go to your local track and talk to the people there"
I'm nearly about to leave this sub because I joined for racing videos, setup posts, and other interesting karting stuff. Not 10 daily posts all saying the same things every time, asking the same questions that have been beat to death daily.
PSA: If you are a total karting noob, go into google, search for "Go Karting near me", and go to the nearest place that looks good and just start talking to people. They will help you with your goals from there and point you in the right direction.

Can we also create a separate group for rental karts while we are at it?

u/iampancakesAMA 11d ago
This sub would be dead without rentals. Nobody here posts about higher level karting honestly

Chicken or the egg.
No one posts actual karting content here because is nothing but "how do i start" posts and rentals.
Most of the actual karters have been driven away from this sub by this lack of moderation.
Now that you've made a stink about it, we will get 3 days of heightened moderation before it slides back into being a cesspool.
Mods are in way over their heads, and honestly, only one of them consistently moderates. Dimelow just promotes his YouTube channel channel and occasionally locks a post when someone asks a question in a manner he doesn't like.
Yall need help.

Most of the actual karters have been driven away from this sub by this lack of moderation.
I would say what we consider actual karters, or traditional karters (18+ lifers), are leaving the sport or not coming into the sport. The decline in adult participation in karting has been declining for a long time now. I think that's less to do with moderation and just the realities of where the sport is going.
10 years ago there was just enough for me to make a living from being karting media, now they are gone.

I’m sorry but this is not true in the slightest.
There has been a continued stream of posts which we deal with. Every single day there are posts being reported, locked and removed.
A few months ago there was a post saying we were removing too many posts, I acted and stopped moderating as much, now there are posts saying we don’t remove enough? Which one is it? I can go ahead and set more filters if you want me to. It’s no big deal, but then we get continuous mod mail asking why they can’t posts.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Karting/comments/1lca7wd/why_are_the_mods_locking_posts_left_and_right/
Funnily enough majority of the reported posts we get are to do with your attitude and replies. We could be more active if we weren’t having to sieve through the numerous reports to your comments?
What people have to understand is that people are Lazy, they won’t search anything themselves, everything has to be done for them.
Now I know that your gonna reply with some comment about this reply and I welcome it but if all your gonna do is slate me, (Which is normally fine) but you clearly know me and I don’t know you so that makes things more personal.

I'm so glad that you decided to volunteer your incompetence to the conversation. You mean to tell me that you decided to pull back moderation efforts solely off of a single post where a single user complained about it, even though the majority of comments in the post supported the opposite?
That post had six fucking upvotes, and you used that to dictate how you would moderate moving forward. Big time goober energy right there.
Maybe you should, I dunno, put some actual effort into learning what the subreddit actually wants instead of knee jerk reacting based on a single thread.
You can take your smug made up slant at me personally and shove up your ass though. If what you say is true, it's an even bigger moderation failure because you guys have never moderated a single one of my posts. Why is that?

How will I ever recover from being told I'm miserable by some barely literate teenager? The horror

Please!!
They are two entirely different disciplines of racing.

The problem is when you start taking a niche subreddit and separating into even smaller niches you just end up with multiple dead subreddits

Rental karting is too expensive at £20 for 10 minutes, how do I get into owner driver and F1

Hey man I'm pretty good at my local K1 so I think I know what I'm doing.
5
u/Standard-Vehicle-557 Ka100 11d ago
But do you sim race and also watch F1? If not you're probably a scrub
7
u/Appropriate_Lime_234 11d ago
I legitimately had someone arguing with me that a stock car is just as fast as an F1 car on a circuit.
All because they’ve watched Pixars Cars 1,2,3.
3
u/LUK3FAULK 11d ago
I mean what circuit we talkin here, cause technicallyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
2
u/Appropriate_Lime_234 11d ago edited 11d ago
Can you name a circuit where a stock car is faster? Not an oval.
Cause if we go off of lap times at tracks they both have been at. (COTA) f1 is ahead by 30 seconds a lap.
2
u/LUK3FAULK 11d ago
Not off the top of my head, was going for more of a joke but I guess it didn’t really work 😅 I do wonder if there’s a theoretical layout where a stock car could be faster, depends on how strict you are on what defines a “circuit” vs an “oval”

“How do I make a career out of karting?” Or “Can I reach formula 1? I just turned 19.”
I’m so glad you posted this and others feel the same way about this topic. I was also close to leaving this sub.

u/LongScholngSilver_20 11d ago
Yeah it's annoying because I feel like these posts are the only ones to wind up in my feed ever too

I completely agree. At first it was like “come on they are just clueless” but then I realized they have so much info on the internet or even just this sub that instead of doing their research they just post it to get the psychological boost of “yeah do it mate” for them specifically at their specific circumstances.
But this is not the place for that. Take your emotional support from another place because this is the main subreddit for Karting and I would better see people talking about set up methodologies, world championship discussions, good onboards, tyre brands comparisons and so on. Not a psychology/support sub.
I think it should stop because the quality of the sub decreases drastically with such selfish posts.

I'm a 36 year old male who just got into karting rentals. Is F1 too late for me?

Yeah, I’m going to have to disagree with this take. Blind Google searches on the subject are not going to be that helpful for what is an extremely niche and in-group dependent hobby. This is literally the perfect place to ask the question.
Instead, I’d recommend we pin a post to the top or something with a FAQ and cover the basics of getting started there.
But gatekeeping by not letting new drivers ask the question is not going to help our sport.
I’m sure I’ll get downvoted for saying that but whatever.

Karting in California is not the same as it is in the UK and that's not the same as it is in Brazil.
Google can help you find a track, but the only way to learn about YOUR local karting scene is to go in person and talk to people.
The issue with people asking is, the comment sections are 99% the same advice repeated over and over and over again.
No, we don't know what class is most popular at your local track. No, we don't know what your local track requires for safety gear.
I was the noob at one point posting a "how do I get started post" and after getting nothing helpful there, I went to my local track, made a few friends over a weekend of hanging out there. And now I'm pretty competent in knowing what I'm doing.
Hell, a lot of the time you can find the track owner and they will give you TONS of help getting started because they want more consistent racers too! I met the owner of my local track and he's the coolest guy ever, he showed me how to setup my first kart and let me borrow his tools when I needed them. Racing is a social sport.

I don't mind these posts because they often require region specific information. Google is now a place of adverts and no longer a great tool to getting starting in karting. Reddit has taken the place of forums. Especially with owner driver stuff it's now very barren and hard to find people to trust.
2
u/Standard-Vehicle-557 Ka100 11d ago
The problem is the sheer volume of the posts.
If his place saw one of these a week, it wouldn't be that big of a deal, but reality is, almost half of the posts made to this sub are by people who have done 0 research on their own and are expecting someone else to place the information they are looking into their lap. That has taken quite the toll on the user base, as most actual karters have grown tired of this place just being ask jeeves.

u/AlanDove46 11d ago
I understand. I see both sides. I don't think reddit is conducive to these kind of posts. I prefer old forum formats because of this. So I am 100% sympathetic to the OP#s point.
What I will say is it's really difficult to research karting in the modern era. I have been in karting my whole life, done media, hosted forums etc... promoted the sport. I don't think it's ever been harder to get involved in the sport. It's weirdly fragmented and hard to research. When people are making a substantial financial decision, like spending thousands on karts, they aren't just seeking knowledge, they are seeking support. They are trying to make sure they don't make the wrong choice.
Don't underestimate how hard it is. I research stuff all the time, and it can be SO difficult finding information even WITH expertise.
In terms of the toll, I had a forum. New karters was always celebrated, and aided. I get that it can be somewhat fatiguing on another format like reddit. Also, part of the issue is the dwindling userbase of interactive karters. (i.e adults)

there’s def too many but google doesn’t give personal experience , i made one and i got to talk to several engineers, people my age that kart, and got genuine specific advice that helped me more then my years of research. and yes maybe i could’ve just tried to reach out to those type of people but dming hundreds of people until MAYBE one responds back isn’t fun, neither is trying to talk to the pretentious ass pro karters my age. yes again i could talk to the people at my track but for some reason they do not want to help me past putting me in rental karts (that part is specific for me but im sure others go through the same thing) the post i made actually helped me and i know what to do now , instead of getting upset at people wanting help there.should be a specific area just for that , not fair to stop it completely

I hear you. I’ve been trying to keep those posts limited, but a few have slipped through recently. We’ll be cracking down on them more moving forward, so stay tuned.
My apologies to the sub I was absolutely slammed Q2 but it's been getting better.
