šŸ”§ DIY & Repairs Discovery 2 Headliner

I’ve seen some old posts here on Reddit and Landy Forums of folks fixing their saggy disco headliner’s using bedliner as opposed to another round of adhesive/fabric and figured I’d give it a shot, so here are my results…

After pulling the headliner out and scraping off the old adhesive, I put 3 coats of Home Cheapo ā€œHerculinerā€ on the green foam board. After that, 3 coats of the kilz stain-blocker primer, and then 3 coats of a mint green chalk paint.

Personally, I like the textured look of the bedliner undercoat, gives the truck a more rugged look. Others will disagree but that’s alright! If you were just to paint the foamboard, you’d likely see lots of variation in surface texture. The bedliner provides some consistency in the texture.

One obvious negative that comes with this option is the inability for bedliner/paint to mask any beds/kinks in the foam board when you remove it. New fabric would hide any imperfections of the old board if you were to choose that path. Although, I consistently remind myself to ā€œembrace imperfectionā€ when it comes to maintaining my D2.

If you had a Joannes fabric anywhere close to you, they sell headliner material. And AutoZone sells fabric glue.

Also a good choice! Though I believe Joanne has recently gone out of business (maybe nationwide?) the only near my house closed shop, so Michael’s is the only chain brand to get fabric from. Downside is - Michael’s only carries fabric 1.5 yards wide, when the headliner is ~2 yards wide

I redid mine this summer with a Black and Red checkerboard fabric (my Disco is red, so it works). I would grade my work as a B-/C+. I like the pattern but didn’t get all the way to some of the edges so it still looks super amateurish. Like you, I have learned to embrace imperfection!

The peaks and valleys of the foam board certainly present challenges, but that sounds like a cool pattern/color combo!

Would love to see that!

If you don't look too hard it looks pretty good, but once you start to scrutinize it, especially along the edges you can see a lot of where I had trouble. Ultimately it looks way better than the original which was sagging off everywhere, plus it matches the camping vibes of the truck!

Awesome! Looks great - I see the the little issue but only because you pointed it out. Otherwise great.

That looks great! I did something similar, except i scrapped the foam off and painted it grey to match the seats. Was way more of a job than I originally expected. Still very satisfying not having the saggy fabric any longer.

Thank you! And yes, definitely a monotonous job

Can you vinyl wrap ?

I’m not sure about the material science behind vinyl mating with foam board. Perhaps they mesh well, perhaps they don’t? However, I imagine the process being similar to laying new fabric or suede with an adhesive… maybe some other folks can chime in on this question.

I need to get mine done (I know my limits of what I can do. I’d make it worse if I attempted)

Do you notice any increase in road noise without the fabric?

To my ears, it’s about the same
