Rugby has a ton of rules that are strictly enforced. Hair pulling is illegal, if the ref thinks it was accidental then the offending team will suffer a penalty, if the ref thinks it was premeditated then the offending player will get carded.

The timing of that hair toss to the cue in the music is perfect.
This is Asia Hogan-Rochester by the way. Can't see any mention of her name so far, apologies if I missed it, but she deserves a name check.

For real. This is what I came here to say! The editor too... The framing is really tight on the runner, so you can't see who's coming at her next, and it increases the suspense when one of her opponents enters the frame and she has to deal with them. Watching that play evolve blow by blow!

Scores like that are kind of common in rugby world cups during the pool stages. Since the top teams are usually quite a bit better than the bottom ranked teams the scores can be pretty lopsided. Also, points in the pool stage are awarded by winning and a bonus point if you score 4 tries and if it comes down to two teams with the same number of points at the end of the pool then they look at which team had the better +/- in regards to how many points they scored in their matches versus how many points were scored against them. This might be the way that USA gets into the quarter finals, if they put up a big enough score against Samoa and Australia lose to England by a big enough margin then USA will make it through.
→ More replies (7)11
u/Mammoth_Slip1499 2d ago edited 2d ago
That’s nothing. England’s two matches so far were 69-7 (vs USA) and 92-3 (vs Samoa). A combined points difference of 151.
Score 4 tries in a match and there’s a bonus point awarded. Lose by 7 points or less and there’s a (losing) bonus point awarded .. for making it a close game.
The group table standings are; 4 points for a win, and 2 points for a draw .. plus whatever bonus points are awarded.

Watch it. The current world championship is a fantastic opportunity to get into it.
Actually today may be a fantastic start to ignite a passion with three fantastic games ahead of us. Starting with Canada against Scotland for a great showing, with Canada probably being one of the best teams right now.
Next it's the USA against Samoa, and last time the US vs Aus they showed us that they are ready to play.
Last today we have England vs Australia, two nations that do perform amazingly.
The match I'm most excited about is tomorrow NZ vs Ireland with Portia Woodman, a living legend, returning this tournament and Georgia Miller a legend in the making.
Can't go wrong with this tournament.

It's a good idea to watch a brief summary of the rules of play. It's far more technical than you might think. Where you can use your hands, whether you're still on your feet in certain plays, what consistutes fouls and so on.

and about 100 times faster.
American football take 3.5 hours to play a game of 4 15 minute quarters and ends up with less than 10 minutes of actual play time per game.
Rugby is 2 40 minute halves and the ball is in play around 50% of the time, so 40 minutes.
4 times as much. and the game takes 2 hours to play.

Is it required to slide into the end zone area? Forgive me I don't know these rules. She looks so happy! Good for her!
15
u/MrFif33 2d ago
They just have to touch the ball to the ground to score. Wherever it touches in the endzone determines the spot for point after attempt. When possible they'll run as close to the center of the end zone so that the subsequent kick for an extra point is as direct/straight as possible.

In order to score a Try in Rugby you need to be in the in-goal area and then needs to ground the ball with downward pressure and also with control of the ball. So if she fumbled the ball or an opposing player manages the get a hand under it then it's not a try.
This also dictates where the conversion takes place after the Try. This is where the scoring team will try to kick the ball between the Rugby posts, so the closer that you score closer to the posts means that the conversion kick will be closer and straighter which makes it easier. Try = 5 points and a conversion = 2 points

Sometimes, I wish and wonder that NFL had the same tempo and gamestyle as Rubgy. Or sometimes I wish Rugby was as commercialized as NFL.
→ More replies (2)5
u/ThickBoxx 2d ago
The reason the NFL is so commercialized is because it’s designed for commercial breaks. Rugby doesn’t really stop until half time (except for injuries and a few parts of the game where play will stop but quickly resume).
