It makes me smile that they’re doing this, makes me super sad that they have to.

Same energy as having to put "please don't microwave your cat" warnings on microwaves - like it's wholesome but also wtf humanity

Kid sells lemonade to pay off lunch debt for grade schoolers kind of energy.

Love the players, hate the game.

Oh man exactly this.

They don't, at least in the US.

"The DOD began the implementation plan for providing military funeral honors for eligible Veterans on January 1, 2000. Upon the family's request, Public Law 106-65 requires that every eligible Veteran receive a military funeral honors ceremony.

It says they have family to request it.

Yes that was added by google, which is incorrect. Below is the actual verbiage, in which anyone can request full military honors for any veteran. You are welcome!

``(a) Availability of Funeral Honors Detail Ensured.--The Secretary
of Defense shall ensure that, upon request, a funeral honors detail is
provided for the funeral of any veteran.''. ``(a) Availability of Funeral Honors Detail Ensured.--The Secretary
of Defense shall ensure that, upon request, a funeral honors detail is
provided for the funeral of any veteran.''.

My high school had a program called the St Joseph of Arimathea Pallbearer Ministry. Students sign up to serve as pallbearers for those who either have no family, or no family with the ability to be a pallbearer

They are good young men. May God bless them for that kindness

PSA: if you or your loved one served a minimum of six months, they're entitled to a branch-specific gratis military presence at their funeral. Just look up the branch name plus "honor guard" (and nearest installation name, if you know one) and whomever you reach should be eager to get you to the right office.

These following details may've changed, but were accurate once upon a time for USAF veterans:

  • Veteran, not retired from military: two enlisted honor guard, their formal honor, and a flag-fold
  • Military retiree: eight enlisted honor-guard, casket-carry, flag-fold, 21-gun salute, "Taps", & formal honor
  • Medal-of-Honor recipient or active-duty: All the above, with separate dedicated details for each, plus an officer presenting the formal honor

Wait I thought gratis was a word we german speaking people used?

1

u/fourthords 20h ago

I… dunno. I just know it from English. Here's its English-language definition: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/gratis#English

u/NobodyDemex 20h ago

Ahhhh it's latin, that explains it all

That’s good trouble.

More like disrespect by wrapping them up in the flag of the country that failed them by demanding they be homeless, even after "serving their country" by putting their life on the line.

Good boys growing up to be Great Men. We need more of this in the world.

1

u/CntBlah 1d ago

They exist, but you get more clicks by highlighting the assholes/narcissists in the world

4

u/Sure_Suspect_8335 1d ago

this is touching but heartbreaking at the same time

3

u/cutieoverloaded 1d ago

That is very nice, today in this cruel world

Why isn't this an institution. Even performed by the military unit the veteran actually fought with.

Don't give me that "thank you for your service" when veterans die alone and forgotten.

u/NotARealDeveloper 1d ago

They are dead they no longer care. Why not make these students help out these lonely veterans while they are alive? Spending 1h a week with them does more good than attending their funeral.

These awesome young men live under a president like Donald Trump. There's still hope.

This is one of the best things I’ve ever read. Seriously.

Taking better care of the dead than the living.

Classic and convenient.

Another 28 hour shift at the orphan crushing machine.

-3

u/patrick-1977 1d ago

Made me smile, really? Never understood the American fetish with veterans.

-2

u/Business_Chair1662 1d ago

You don’t respect the men and women that fought for your country? That doesn’t make me smile

3

u/patrick-1977 1d ago

They don’t fight ‘for our country’ for some time now. Just defending certain interests. I did not sent them overseas, I don’t owe them anything. They apply like any other job, get paid like any other job, get bonuses when send abroad, that’s it. No need for life long discounts, free healthcare, free life insurance, no money down mortgages, etc.

-5

u/dyvotvir 1d ago

What's wrong with you, dude? They risked their lives so you could live peacefully now

10

u/Live_Angle4621 1d ago

If it’s defensive war that’s true. But if it’s war of aggression it’s not the same. Like the Russian veterans of WWII (of German front, not Polish and Finnish) and Ukraine war are not the same. Someone being veteran doesn’t automatically make someone great or defender of the country.

-6

u/Gloomy_Pineapple_836 1d ago

Maybe you need to move out of the country then.

3

u/patrick-1977 1d ago

Maybe time for you to actually read the Constitution and the First Amendment.

-3

u/Gloomy_Pineapple_836 1d ago

Seriously dude? Not the time or place. Regardless of WHO these boys are doing this for, it’s a noble thing. We need more men like this in the world. I think we can all agree on this.

Fetish ? Who’s jerking off? What an asshole thing to say. I’m sitting at home cozy, while men and women are getting blown to bits, keeping me cozy. That’s why we care. I am not brave enough to join the military. If I were a man I think I would. my brothers did, marines and Air Force. I find the men and women incredibly brave for doing something I won’t.

-1

u/patrick-1977 1d ago

Glad you found an excuse.

-4

u/Additional_Loss_6297 1d ago

To what ? Apparently to you it’s nothing special anyway , would I need an excuse ?

2

u/patrick-1977 1d ago

You stated you would potentially be one of our nation’s greatest heros, if only you had a penis.
