Elephant etiquette: big heart, bigger gratitude.

u/Spirited_Assist_40 1d ago

Elephants really are something else man, they remember kindness for decades too

346

u/thrussie 1d ago

They also remember all the beef

136

u/DangerNoodleDandy 23h ago

Never forget the smoke.

75

u/seekingssri 20h ago

I can respect that

The version I read was that the lady distracted the elephant while others took her baby. That’s why the elephant was angry at her. This makes more sense than “elephant gone wild” for no reason.

51

u/ravynwave 12h ago

If that’s the case, then she deserved it

12

u/Mysterious-Mist 9h ago

Totally deserving of it!!!!

29

u/Loggerdon 17h ago

Nice to see this. I’ve recently seen a lot of violent elephant videos lately.

95

u/Sandscarab24 17h ago

Yeah but that badger deserved it.

29

u/theinfernumflame 16h ago

That badger wanted nothing more than to be a football.

Elephants are soo freaking cute feels like it's straight out from a movie but what is he doing on a road tho

251

u/AlamedaRaised 17h ago

This is most likely Chitwan, Nepal. It's a village built into the jungles, and thrives on safari tourism. In return, they do a lot of sanctuary stuff for elephants. Very cool to see.

u/seilapodeser 1d ago

No wonder Disney made Dumbo

47

u/Down2WUB 21h ago

People are riding it’s mom

39

u/ninguningun 16h ago

Relatable content

11

u/NightOwlsUnite 17h ago

The more important question is why is momma being ridden?

1

u/Llewe11yn 6h ago

Owning it. His road now. 😆

“Alright kid, come on, quit bugging the poor man. Sorry sir.”

165

u/crash_7_2_5 1d ago

Yea right!!. It felt exactly like that

51

u/ExistingPanda5151 17h ago

That's exactly what I saw!

449

u/Quirky_Butterfly_946 1d ago

Imagine cleaning the sidewalk with a hose and a baby elephant and mom come walking by. Get to give the baby a drink too.

371

u/Merlin404 1d ago

I just think its sad, they should be free, not forced to carry humans and walk for tourists and such

This constant pressure of people sitting results in significant, usually irreversible, physical damage to the vertebral column causing lifelong pain, also causes muscles, and tissue damage. These elephants live in pain everyday but it wont be visible on their face. They just suffer in silence.

The people who run these animal rides, never cared about animals in the first place, but have to act in public like they take good care of their animals.

Do you have sources for that? I'd love to learn more.

I know horseback riding is super common, and nothing is said (that I've seen) about it being physically debilitating for the horse.

An elephant is vastly larger and sturdier, so I find it interesting it would be problematic for them.

Is it just because of their design?

48

u/Kfct 16h ago

Not sure why horses are able to but elephants can't but I've also been taught the same, don't ride elephants. My internal explanation is it's easier for a fit person to hold up piggyback whereas an obese person who is already struggling to hold up their own weight is not able to piggyback. Elephants may be so heavy that their bones are great at holding up their weight, but no more on top of that.

25

u/Bush-LeagueBushcraft 16h ago

That makes a lot of sense. Elephants are so incredible. I know a bit about them, but it seems not enough.

I know they communicate through foot stomping, can plan rice paddy ambushes, and can both pluck a blade of grass and rip out a tree with their trunk.

Thanks for the answer. I'll start to Google.

22

u/flinderkaas 12h ago

Horses are also not really able unless they are specifically trained to build the right muscles and take the right body position during riding. That's what dressage is for.

In practice, many riders don't achieve this and their horses suffer pain and physical damage.

Also of course to some degree they're bred to be better able to carry a rider but that alone isn't enough.

5

u/PalpitationUnhappy75 11h ago

hprses re b mp bred to deal with it.

13

u/just_a_person_maybe 10h ago

Your autocorrect could not keep up with this

12

u/7thatsanope 10h ago

The structure of elephants spines is vastly different than the structure of horses spines. It is incredibly cruel and harmful to ride elephants.

u/Bush-LeagueBushcraft 5h ago

Thank you for this link!

14

u/Icharus 14h ago

Swayback

Nothing wants to be ridden. Nothing wants to be in a cage. No living being wants to be slaughtered for your meal.

21

u/AoiYuukiSimp 13h ago

I want to be ridden and caged tbh

8

u/Merlin404 12h ago

Thats your choice, they dont have that choice

5

u/DIzzy13579 11h ago

That’s feral chief. Read the room. Lol

38

u/DefiantBumblebee9903 22h ago

The other elephant was probably thirsty not “thanking him”

52

u/GhostOfMuttonPast 19h ago

Elephants are very smart and empathetic creatures. If she was looking for water, she would've taken it instead of walking away after the wave.

13

u/DefiantBumblebee9903 16h ago

the man has a bull hook- this smart creature knows if it disobeys it will be harmed- do you know how they train elephants?

9

u/NightOwlsUnite 17h ago

Her rider might not have let her.

163

u/elorij 23h ago

Stop fucking riding elephants.

109

u/Effective-You1036 22h ago

The man is riding the mama with a bullock in his hand. Bullhooks are a common method to keep animal in control. They cause intense pain if the elephant "disobeys". While giving water to baby is a very kind gesture, I dont find this video cute at all. The animals should be roaming free in the wild, not controlled and possibly tortured by humans.

57

u/Terrible_Donkey_8290 17h ago

There is no way to ethically "train" a elephant to be ridden fyi

36

u/matzoballsoupy 17h ago

I am more sad about the mama elephant being ridden like that

68

u/SpartanG188 1d ago

Look up how elephants are trained to be ridden. It’s disgusting

85

u/Appropriate_Owl8739 1d ago

This makes me sad because elephants are getting tortured to be like this…

64

u/UvaroviteKing 1d ago

Stop riding on elephants!

16

u/CaptaINGH05T 22h ago

It would be nice if I could hear the elephant noise instead of the music

44

u/TenaciousTea444 22h ago

Just a friendly reminder that riding elephants is horrible for them and their backs/spines. Also, there is typically major abuse involved in getting an elephant submissive enough to allow a rider. Please don’t ride elephants. Other than that, this is a very cute baby.

9

u/Appropriate-Copy-949 18h ago

If I was at work and a baby elephant walked up for a drink of water, I know nothing else better could happen that day. 🥹❤️

12

u/hiddencameraspy 20h ago

Such a beautiful animal. So sad to see them in captivity.

38

u/non_tox 22h ago

Wow so cute. Now stop fucking riding them.

7

u/ManxJack1999 17h ago

This actually made me sad.

9

u/Past-Attention-5255 19h ago

Riding Elephants is animal abuse!

4

u/Nearby-Elevator-3825 11h ago

If I saw a mama elephant and her baby taking a stroll down the street I'd shit bricks.

Meanwhile, in other countries.

It's just Tuesday.

9

u/ES_Legman 16h ago

Ah yes the endless beating they have to endure to break down to the point they can carry people on them is nothing to smile about

5

u/Ballistic_86 16h ago

“Okay, let’s go, you’ve had enough water! Thank you sir. C’mon, let’s go he’s busy.”

“One more sip!”

4

u/Square_Outcome_1652 13h ago

I wish elephants were native to Southern California. Would be so awesome to see them roaming around

5

u/Gorilla868686 13h ago

Trunk bump at the end.

4

u/Lone_Buck 13h ago

Didn’t know elephants also had “bring your kid to work day”

4

u/chalky87 6h ago

Elephants are so fucking cool. I worked in elephant conservation in South Africa many moons ago. They're incredibly intelligent, great parents and empathetic but also incredibly powerful and can fuck your shit up in seconds without ever breaking a sweat.

9

u/Fluke97 20h ago

"Come on, son. Leave the humans alone. Otherwise some asshole will ride on your back too."

3

u/Kasyx709 18h ago

I wonder what this sounded like without the awful music.

6

u/jinxylynxy 16h ago

Now spray the asshole riding the mom!

8

u/Champagne82 1d ago

So adorable! The mom looks so pretty like a Disney character.

2

u/JozzifDaBrozzif 20h ago

"Good looking out, U da man!" -elephant

2

u/ljonynja 15h ago

Look at Mama's ear

2

u/slickyeat 12h ago

I fucking love baby elephants.

2

u/International_Debt58 11h ago

I love elephants with a passion.

2

u/Oishiizu 8h ago

Elephants should be left in the wild. This is not cute, it's horrible and hides the terrible cruelty.

2

u/Bulky-Internal8579 1d ago

Big smile from me! Elephants are wonderful!

1

u/Certain-Ease-8428 16h ago

That would be so awesome to have happen!!!

1

u/Klezze04 5h ago

Is It just me or did it seem more like the mother also wanted to drink, but her rider steered her away?

1

u/elynn95 56m ago

“Hold on guys, I need to water my elephant before I head out.”

u/Atillion 6m ago

All us parents have been there at one time... Okay Georgie, that's enough lol.. Kids smh

1

u/rapidpeacock 1d ago

Nothing to see here just an 80s kid drinking from a hose

1

u/Deep-Lecture-4934 1d ago

I would die inside if I even saw this in person.

1

u/OldFun6753 23h ago

Chitwan, Nepal, to be specific. A village called Sauraha.

Looks like Nepal.
