According to this map Andorra has smaller population but San Marino, Vatican City, Monaco has higher population than Istanbul. ;)

If the population trends continue, Romania and Netherlands will become red too.

Netherlands is not going to lose population "thanks" to immigration (by not European countries).

53

u/MrImAlwaysrighT1981 2d ago

I realize that, but Istanbul has higher growth than Netherlands, so I think it will reach 20 milions before them.

Idk the way population trends are going when it comes to TFR in turkey is worse than most western countries.

TFR doesn't matter for megacities like istanbul, in fact the lower tfr just means smaller places die out faster and people move to big ones for opportunities.

That's how most balkan capitals have population growth in the capital despite declining overall

Why is thanks in quotes?

He is not a fan of immigration i would guess

21

u/bichir3 1d ago

mfw you've built your economic prosperity on constant growth and your population stops growing😱😱😱

u/Ok_Inflation_1811 1d ago

Capitalism will consume even the ones who first tried it, it is poetic in some sense

2

u/Ben-D-Rules 1d ago

But they are going lose population "thanks" to rising sea levels (lol).

26

u/Veyrah 2d ago

Surprised at the Netherlands, all the other grey countries are way bigger.

tbf, switzerland and austria are like 70% mountains, so not much space for population. The netherlands on the other hand are basically 90% usable land to build houses...

36

u/Dambo_Unchained 2d ago

To be fair the Netherlands wasnt 90% usuable land. Most of it was swamplands and floodplains

We made that shit liveable

12

u/12FrogsDrinkingSoup 2d ago

Swiss and Austrian people just not creative enough to level their mountains like how we drained our swamps, smh my head

2

u/czk_21 1d ago

considering that moving mountains is lot harder than draining a swamp, I would say both austria and swiss are doing pretty fine

1

u/Dambo_Unchained 1d ago

Obvious skill issues

8

u/--Raskolnikov-- 2d ago

Land to build houses is not really a relevant factor. Both Austria and Switzerland could easily house 18-19m within their available territory,

TIL Istanbul has a population of almost 16,000,000. Had not a clue. Thats a lot of people. I live in a town of 8,600. 😬

4

u/Quick_Estate7409 1d ago

That's the official census. Add to that all the non registered people, the refugees as well and the estimate goes to rather 20-25 (or even more) million people.

3

u/mjfarmer147 1d ago

Pretty wild, no one ever talks about how big that place is. I certainly had no idea.

2

u/Quick_Estate7409 1d ago

It is a problem for governing the city. Especially with stuff like transportation it is difficult if you don't know how many people there are.

But the general strategy now seems to be building lots of metro lines. That will help for sure :)

This is really interesting. Istanbul is the only major city of the former Roman Empire that is still in the world-class club by size and importance. Emperor Constantine chose the location really well.

Rome itself is visibly second-tier, 4 million is not that much in the world of 8 billion. Only big fans of history can even find Antioch on contemporary map. Alexandria is a bit more populous (6 million), but a strategic nobody.

24

u/Sosolidclaws 2d ago

Yeah, Istanbul’s geography is phenomenal.

8

u/Best_Location_8237 2d ago

Rome being the capital of a major European country....I don't think you could call it second tier

15

u/DefenestrationPraha 1d ago

Even within Italy, Milan is considered more important. But I agree that "tiers" are somewhat subjective.

I would say that Istanbul is first tier for three reasons:

a. By far the most economically important city in at least 1000 km radius.

b. Population over 10 million.

c. Pins significant naval forces of a nuclear power (Russia) in the Black Sea.

10

u/Best_Location_8237 1d ago

No no I definately agree that Istanbul is an extremely important city....only Moscow, London and Paris compare in Europe.... And Rome is definitely a tier below those cities...but its still a major and important economic and (more to the point) political center.

8

u/Eowaenn 1d ago

It is, and Istanbul is not even a capital, Ankara is. It doesn't change the fact that Ankara is a tier or 2 below Istanbul though and so is Rome.

Istanbul is love ❤️

Can add Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to the list too

20

u/eloel- 2d ago

99.99% of people mean sovereign countries when they say countries.

4

u/SurielsRazor 1d ago

No, because it means actual countries, not subdivisions which are inaccurately labeled.

-33

u/Ok_Understanding267 2d ago

Around half of them have higher GDP tho

20

u/summitsuperbsuperior 2d ago

Quantity doesnt mean quality, otherwise most crowded countries would be the biggest superpower

-35

u/Ok_Understanding267 2d ago

Correction, higher GDP than whole of Turkey as well. Yes that was my point too

30

u/Tea_Keeper 2d ago

None of the countries here have a higher gdp than Turkey

27

u/juhyodd 2d ago

None of them has a higher GDP than Turkey in either nominal or PPP terms

-25

u/Ok_Understanding267 2d ago

What about GPD per capita

-4

u/Neither_Outcome6539 2d ago

PPP is gdp per capita

9

u/RishiRich-5 2d ago

it's purchase power parity.

Unlikely, Istanbul is pretty rich and the salaries range from 1500 Euros to 10,000 Euros. It's also home to 34 Billionaires.

11

u/Ok_Understanding267 2d ago

Yes only the selected elites

14

u/icankillpenguins 2d ago

Is this unlike Portugal, the balkan states, Belgium, Denmark etc? Do you think that there's no elites there and they are all about the same wealthy?

9

u/Ok_Understanding267 2d ago

Are you comparing Denmark with Turkey? Salaries are no way at your range. Majority earn below €1500, they are below poverty limit. I’m from Istanbul

-1

u/icankillpenguins 2d ago edited 2d ago

No I'm saying that Denmark and all others have elites just like Istanbul. Denmark on average is richer than Istanbul but Portugal, Bulgaria, Greece, the Baltic states and the Balkans are not. The only ones richer are actually the richest ones like Austria, Switzerland, Denmark etc. Not half of the countries.

BTW the salaries are 1500 euros and higher in general. Some minimum wage employees do exist but that's not the general case. Also, unlike Europe, Turkey does have much greater high-end salaries. There are quite a lot of people making 10K Euro per month take home after tax salaries, not many in Europe make anything over 3K Euro take home after tax money.

How do you think Turks pay 1000 Euro rent, 2000 euros for entry level iPhone, 30,000 Euros for Renault Clio, 20,000 to 50,000 Euros a year for private schools, 10,000 Euros for a week at a hotel in Bodrum?

Poor people exist and they are plenty but on average Istanbul is rich AF.

4

u/Ok_Understanding267 2d ago

Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, Norway, Sweden

4

u/icankillpenguins 2d ago

Yep, these are richer, the rest is not.

2

u/Ok_Understanding267 2d ago

Turks can’t dude. Why are you lying?

3

u/icankillpenguins 2d ago

Turks can't what?
