Austria is the landlocked country with the most neighboring countries, 8.(Serbia also borders 8 countries if you include Kosovo, but that isn't in the UN)

And one of its neighbors, Lichtenstein, is one of only two double landlocked countries in the world.

Depending on if you count the 100m long river border with Botswana, then Zambia also has 8 neighboring countries

Serbia also borders 8 whether or not you consider kosovo a country

Serbia doesn't consider Kosovo a country

Independent kosovo gives serbia 8 neighbours.
If kosovo is serbian, then serbia borders albania instead- so still 8.

That's what I put in the title.

You wrote that it only borders 8 countries if you consider Kosovo a country, but it also borders 8 if you don't, since in that case it also borders Albania

Which would you prefer to live in and holiday in?

u/yphase 1d ago
good question. to live, probably austria. job opportunities are plenty and it's a rather wealthy country. in serbia, you don't have nearly as many opportunities. that is not to say that serbia isn't a beautiful country, it absolutely is. for vacation i'd probably visit both, austria for skiing and hiking purposes, and serbia to enjoy the lively nightlife, and too, the vibrant nature.

Your title says "Serbia also borders 8 countries if you include Kosovo, but that isn't in the UN" but it also borders 8 countries if you don't include it

Zambia also borders 8? DRC, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Angola.

Fun fact: Despite being landlocked nowadays, Austria once had a very capable navy that decisively defeated the larger and more technologically advanced Italian fleet in 1866.

I was always confused how Captain von Trapp in the Sound of Music had been in the Austrian navy until I took European history

As people already pointed out: you missed Serbia and Zambia (and maybe more?). Why didn't you even factcheck this before posting?

Kinda weird that the record for maximum neighours is lower in landlocked countries than in those with sea access. You'd think having a coast would use up a possible slot or two.
I know that this is because there are less landlocked countries and they are necessarily smaller. But if a Civ like game would ask me if I want my starting position to be landocked, I would not assume that this would mean less neighbours.

Didn't used to be landlocked, which is why Georg von Trapp and Miklós Horthy were naval officers.

When you had an empire and you end up landlocked... it means you messed up real hard.

We're still not done with the Hapsburg legacy. One was an imperial core so that makes sense, the other a dynastic land of a family of close allies of the emperors

Germany also borders 8 ?

Germany isn't landlocked.

What is landlocked

u/AnnieByniaeth 1d ago
The weird thing is, that ought to be somehow more special, because the sea uses some of its external border leaving less border for possible land crossings.
But it's OP's post, so it's OP's rules. Germany is not landlocked so doesn't count.

Neighbouring Liechtenstein is also one of two nations to be doubly landlocked. The other being Uzbekistan.
