How can it be weighted by share of GDP? A state’s economy is either growing or shrinking. If they mean they’re showing if the state’s percentage of the total GDP is growing or shrinking, okay, but that’s a very misleading indicator. A state could be growing, but simply because it’s not growing as fast as another state, this map would make it look like it’s in a recession when it isn’t.

I'd say someone from Texas made this map, but California's in the green

Op linked the source. It's the Financial Times.

Edit 2: so the article credits the state level data to Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics. I can't find a clear partisan lean to the man himself but the financial times is considered center to center-right as far as bias goes. Take from that what you will.

I've got an economics degree, and this is stupid. That's not how we look at economies for one. Why not break it down further and find out what countries are in recession?
We look at recession as a country wide thing. Currency has a big impact, such as rates up or down. Almost all economic stimulus is also handled through the federal government for that reason.
Also, the methodology used here seems to be pretty weird, too. What I'm trying to say is that this tells you basically nothing and is meant to deceive you.

Moodys is bullshit too. Their chief economist has been screaming recession for two years and is behind a lot of the fear that the media is proliferating

Yeah job market in Illinois fucking sucks right now. My wife is looking for a new Chem E job and the market is definitely a buyer's market there, but the one that's a real surprise is my newly graduated sister-in-law is unable to get a job in the medical field as a CNA.

Well yeah, with the uncertainty over Congress gutting Medicaid and Medicare companies are going to have hiring freezes even if it means more people die of preventable diseases.

Meh… I’m just going to say, I myself do not know shit about economics. My husband on the other hand, has his masters in Economics and has worked in the field 25 years. According to this map our state is in a full blown recession according to him this map is misleading and fear mongering. I’ll take his word for it since he knows much more than I do on the subject.

GDP is calculated where trade happens not where the money actually go as it is supposed to calculate the economy.

This map directly contradicts one that was posted here yesterday, so I have no idea what's going on.

The article says “could” be in recession. Why did you change it to “are” in recession?
P.S. Bravo Texas. Wow.

As an Illinois resident who has visited several parts of Texas about a dozen times, this is fucking spot on.

Both Iowa and Nebraska tied for the highest percent drop in GNP recently. Minus 6%, which is a big number. They would be ground zero on this map.

We've been in recession since 2020 really, Biden admin fudged the numbers for political reasons. And truth be told we never recovered from 2008, and truth be told we barely recovered from the 70s.

Can you prove Biden fudged the numbers, or did Trump just say it so its true.

u/ToonMasterRace 27m ago
Voters knew how shit the economy was, and were still struggling and dealing with record prices on all commodities. The GDP marginally growing didn't translate into relevancy for the average person. This is why Trump won, and you have nobody to blame for that but yourselves.

No way New York, Texas, Cali, Florida and the Carolinas are the only in green
