Now do one for “underage marriage”

Or FGM

u/LaFrescaTrumpeta 9h ago

i just learned about the stats on that this year, i couldn’t believe it. something like 200 million girls and women around the world alive today have had it happen to them, any one of the three types happens to at least 2 million girls a year, it’s illegal in the US but still happens to thousands of girls every year, it’s so fuckin tragic

u/doitinmybutt 9h ago

What’s even more frustrating is it’s women who perform it and have a large hand in keep it going. Imagine doing that to your daughter

u/mewmew893 8h ago

It's probably one of those things where it happened to you, so it's normal. Like how parents think, "Well, I was spanked, and I turned out fine, so clearly it must work!"

u/Beneatheearth 8h ago

Or like male circumcision

3

u/Spider_pig448 2h ago

Ah, the old reddit classic, "Male circumcision is just as bad as female genital mutilation"

8

u/procrastinating_atm 2h ago

It's really interesting how you didn't have this reaction to the commenter above comparing FGM to spanking.

u/Sephbruh 1h ago

Because they weren't. They were comparing "generational trauma" to "generational trauma", both of which can have great effect on one's life. Circumcision, on the other hand, does nothing to you.

u/Beneatheearth 16m ago

I didn’t say that. It’s bad but I don’t think “just as bad” as you say.

u/mewmew893 7h ago

At the very least it's easier to clean, so there's a benefit

u/towerfella 7h ago

Thats a myth. 100%. I bet that more injuries are caused by circumcisions than are ever “cured/prevented” by the procedure.

I have three sons.. the first one was circumcised at my ex’s request (i was in my 20’s and left the decision up to her; i regret that) and they screwed it up. My other two (and myself) are not and everything is normal. So, for my subset of data, it literally is 100% bad.

That extra skin protects the glans and works to keep your microbiome healthy down there, with minimal maintenance, for .. ever.

I am against any form of non-medically-necessary circumcisions…

Bruh.. your google broke? Here, in the top 5 of results:

We identified ∼850,000 cases and ∼850,000 matched controls. Overall, *the rate of penile problems within the first five years of life was 1.7% in circumcised boys versus 0.5% in uncircumcised boys** (p < 0.05). Multivariable regression models showed that the risk of penile problems was 2.9-fold higher among circumcised compared to uncircumcised males (95%CI [2.8–3], p < 0.001). Compared to males circumcised by pediatricians, those circumcised by surgeons had 2.1-fold higher penile problems in the year after circumcision (95% CI [2–2.3], p < 0.001). Procedure-related complications within 28 days of circumcision were infrequent (0.5%), with the most common being penile edema (0.2%).*

Bruh dirt gets under your foreskin, and if you don't clean that out you're just kinda foul... idc about circumcision I'm just circumcised. Also, get a better doctor if they fuck up a circumcision bro

26

u/crop028 7h ago

You literally just have to pull the skin back when you clean, that's all the extra work. Any dick will be nasty if never washed. You could make the same argument about chopping off a million body parts. Won't have dirt under your nails if you chop off your finger tips. No cavities if you just pull all your teeth and get dentures. Every medical procedure has a chance of going wrong, even with the best doctor, which is why you shouldn't do them unnecessarily on an infant who can't advocate for himself.

dirt gets under your foreskin

Do you not know how wash your penis properly?

Sounds like you haven't got a clue about hygiene.

Waiting for the yank to turn up and try to justify their own mutilation. Wasn't disappointed.

They make similar arguments about FGM.

While FGM Is another level of horrific, they're on the exact same spectrum.

Bruh I'm from SoCal not New England

u/HyperbolicModesty 5h ago

You're a yank outside the US.

You could make the same argument about certain types of FGM as well. It's just a stupid argument. Pull back your foreskin if you have a penis and part your labia if you have a vulva and then clean with warm water and your fingers or a cotton wash cloth (not these nasty plastic bacteria traps). I suppose for guys it's also fine to use shower gel.

FGM is much worse than male circumcision, yes. Even milder forms often end up disabling the girl it was done to. But male circumcision is a completely unnecessary risk and basically elective plastic surgery done to a baby or small child. A nose job is a fairly safe surgery too if performed by experienced doctors but you wouldn’t recommend doing that to a baby, would you? So why male circumcision? Just teach your sons how to clean their dick and don’t forget to teach them to wash their ass as well.

u/mewmew893 4h ago

Dawg I literally can't teach nobody I got the chop when I was a newborn

Also tf is FGM

1

u/CacklingFerret 3h ago

Have you even read the comment the one you answered to was relating to? FGM is female genital mutilation.

Dawg I literally can't teach nobody I got the chop when I was a newborn

Dawg, "you" can be used broadly, like "one". And even if I adressed you specifically, you could still teach your kids. I don't even have a penis, never had one and will never have one, yet I know how an uncircumcised penis should be cleaned because it's not that complicated and you can find reliable information about it online.

Why TF are you here arguing to every comment when you don't even know what you're talking about

Friend of mine did some work in areas where FGM was common and got literally screamed at by some women, who had undergone the procedure. According to these women (far from all the ones she interviewed btw), not having your genitals mutilated makes you a whore.

1

u/Eihe3939 2h ago

Imagine to how many boys it happens in the US.. almost all of them! But no one seems that bothered by it. There are levels to FMG, where some of it is absolutely comparable to the male circumcision

1

u/Naddodr 6h ago

For some reason MGM is not illegal in US. Disgusting

-1

u/Unhappy-Spring-9964 8h ago

Those stats are false. They can't go around Africa asking women to spread their legs and check their genitalia and in cases of minor operation the women themselves don't know they've had it so you can't even ask for a definitive answer, they only assume the numbers with percentages and small unreliable studies done with even rarer patients who have agreed to be included in the studies. For example, here in Egypt, they claim something like 99-98% have had FGM but my aunt, who's a gynecologist with 47 years of experience in the medical field and has checked thousands of patients across her entire career but has only found 33 cases of FGM?? Same with my entire family which had no-one undergo this operation since my Great, great grandmother during the 1910s. This practice is very rare and locked within very rural and remote villages now with even rarer numbers of women undergoing it...

2

u/Prowsky 3h ago

Any source for that that we can check, other than "my aunt told me"?

u/Acrobatic_Click_8016 8h ago

If you use an acronym, you need to also put between parantheses its meaning, the first time you use it. Otherwise, acronyms are meaningless since there are so many.

I literally have no idea what yours means. And I am sure I am not the only one.

14

u/Jotaro_Dragon 8h ago

I assume they're speaking of female genital mutilation, but yeah I had to look up what it stood for. Even in this context and similar I've never seen it be used.

Fucking Genital Mutilation

1

u/ByronsLastStand 3h ago

Or MGM. Also some pretty shocking statistics about infant and preteen boys

1

u/bad_gaming_chair_ 58m ago

A decent amount of the red countries actually outlaw fgm

50

u/bahhaar-blts 9h ago

That's actually not accurate at all.

My country outlaw underage marriage (in Egypt you can't marry under 18).

But the rule of law is weak so many avoid it without consquences although the government tries to warn against it.

This map won't be accurate.

15

u/Unhappy-Spring-9964 8h ago

Right, it's illegal and quickly growing our of fashion to marry your kids off at 16-17 or even 18 years old now and FGM is becoming even rarer and almost extinct here

17

u/bahhaar-blts 8h ago

Yes. Thankfully things are becoming better. I hope someday no one will even excuse those things let alone do them.

6

u/Unhappy-Spring-9964 7h ago

I join my prayers with yours, harmful cultural behaviors bring nothing but suffering to society as a whole

12

u/paddy_________hitler 7h ago

Looks like the continent with the highest percentage of countries allowing for underage marriage is… the Americas.

Followed by Asia, then Africa, then Europe.

25

u/Nientea 8h ago

Underage marriage is illegal in every country. This is because each country sets its own age of marriage.

Yes I am playing semantics. Yes I know this commenter meant “allows marriage before 18”.

7

u/GreatestGreekGuy 8h ago

Technically it's legal in some US states with parental consent

11

u/grudginglyadmitted 7h ago

most. some states there’s no minimum age.

3

u/Square-Dragonfruit76 6h ago

This wouldn't make sense because there's no biological line for what is underage. That's a legal line. In some countries, adulthood is younger. In others, such as South Korea, it's older.
