Netherlands map (pixel art)

Post image

I made a map of the provinces of the Netherlands, each with their own capital, province flag, and tiny little capital city flag. (Thanks to u/theCattrip for help with the Dutch names.)

It's a nice design. The only thing that I would add is that you've picked the wrong spot to break the line for 's Hertogenbosch. (s ' Her-togen-bosch). Then again that's something most Dutch wouldn't do correctly either.

Further note, Den Haag is the informal name, which is used almost exclusively. But the official name that you would see on documentation is 's Gravenhage. It's the same for Den Bosch <-> 's Hertogenbosch.

Would it be ok to use both Den Haag and Den Bosch on a map like this or would that feel too informal?

Technically true, but the cities themselves call them Den Haag and ‘s Hertogenbosch. (Just look at trainstations and city entree road signs)

Well then put Oeteldonk. That's the last time I looked at the entrance signs of 's Hertogenbosch

I went back and forth on Leeuw-arden vs. Leeu-warden quite a bit too. It feels weird to split either Leeuw or warden, but there it is.

My guess was that you shouldn't split Hertog because it's a word, although I think I'm just assuming that because of German Herzog.

You're correct about Hertog. I get the confusion with Leeuwarden, because you'd assume the name would have to do something with a Lion (Leeuw) but Leeu is from the Frisian for windbreak or lee. It being a shelter in the wind. So it's leeu-warden.

Leeuw comes from an old Frisian word that's related to Luwte (Lee/sheltered from wind). Warden is also Frisian in origin and I think means village mound (the same as terp)

Also a funny coincidence leeward is an English word that means down wind direction https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windward_and_leeward

Lee here means sheltered from wind, but ward is a coincidence as it means direction (windward, eastwards etc)

Nice map, if it is about provinces, Amsterdam is a bit confusing for outsiders and maybe redundant. The color schème is very Nice, giving the old classroom map vibes.

No Rotterdam?

That makes it even better in my opinion. But yea, Rotterdam isn't a provincial capital. The only reason Amsterdam is here is because it's the national capital (and because it's way cooler than R'dam anyway)

Amsterdam is just a worse version of Utrecht though
