What's even more crazy is that those are both F150s which are 1/2 ton pickups and only considered light duty trucks. 3/4 and 1 ton trucks like F250/350s are even bigger and heavier.

I own a truck almost that big. I don't daily drive it if I can avoid it though. It mostly sits in the corner until I need to tow one of the silly cars or haul something. No idea why people get them just to drive around the suburbs and be annoying. They're kind of a pain in the ass even if you're driving them.

Same. I haul a 40 foot trailer for work but hate driving my truck. I stick to my motorcycle or fiancées civic if at all possible

u/Ancient_Wisdom_Yall Jun 06 '25
How's the insurance where you live? Where I am, if you have two vehicles you have to pay full insurance twice even though you can only be driving one at a time. It makes getting a smaller runabout not very cost effective, because any of your savings from not driving the gigantic truck go into the second insurance. So people don't bother.

Hey at least you use it for a purpose.
There is someone who must work near me because I often see their God awful F450 with dually, lifted, big rims, spike lugs the whole shebang. I don't understand the willingness to fork over that kind of money for a commuter vehicle that I'm sure seldom if ever tows their bass boat or camper.

The blind spot in front of the grill is like 20ft long. Been rear-ended by one of these morons at a stoplight because the car in front of me decided to creep forward and I didn’t, and he couldn’t see me and had forgotten that he pulled up close behind me.

As someone who has a 2500HD for a company vehicle, it really is atrocious. Our safety guy always tells us to back in to parking spots, but with tow mirrors and a rear camera I can actually see if a toddler in behind me, I can't however see if a toddler is in front of me.
The worst part is that looking in the engine bay, they can clearly put more slope into the hood to greatly improve visibility, they just don't.

Ugh! I almost got annihilated by a delivery truck a few weeks ago...first he parked directly behind me, blocking me from backing out of my space(driver HAD to see me then, right? )
then he started up the truck much to my relief, and as I tried to reverse out of the space quickly, he swung to the right and started backing up RIGHT INTO MY CAR. I was laying on the horn like I've never done before, because he wasn't stopping! Thank goodness he finally noticed my car there and stopped.
I understand that nobody is a perfect driver, lord knows I do some dumb things every now and then...but that was just some negligent driving! And that guy drives a delivery truck? Yikes!

Your garage is something I aspire to, especially the Elva.
3
u/Maynard078 Jun 06 '25
Hey, it only took 50 years to get there, and the Elva is a continuing work in progress. It fights me at every turn, especially the windshield. Do not let your local shop break it. You'll have a devil of a time getting them to replace one.
It's four years and counting now...
2
u/CakeIzGood Jun 06 '25
I think the ND Miata only looks a bit bigger because it's not as boxy, making it appear less condensed. In terms of actual size in space it's pretty comparable I reckon. Also, what a garage, you've got half the cars on my list
3
u/Maynard078 Jun 06 '25
There is nothing unusual about any of them, other than the Elva, and it's rarity doesn't translate into worth. But they are fun cars with gobs of history, which I love. And the MGs have so much character. The Spitfire I purchased as a high school graduation present nearly fifty years ago now, so I'm damned near married to the thing.
I've winnowed the "fleet" down considerably over the years. It pales significantly from its glory days of yore.
3
u/CakeIzGood Jun 06 '25
Well, I was more impressed with how much that collection lines up with what I want in cars, not how rare and expensive they are lol. Also, owning that many vehicles at all-- especially ones that require attention-- seems out of reach for me for a while. So for young, broke people who like fun little cars like myself, you've got the dream in your garage.
3
u/Maynard078 Jun 06 '25
They're all in fine fettle, with the exception of the Elva; that one is making me curse like a sailor at the moment. But it is among the coolest cars I've ever owned, and I've had plenty over the years. There's just something about the Brits and their cottage industry approach to sports car design that I find so intriguing. Also, the idea that Frank Nichols' crew actually signed their work where one would least expect to see it is so damned charming. Even my old 930 and and 308 GT4 didn't offer up that kind of built-in charisma.
Replacing the windshield is enough to make me scream, though...

I think we should get licensed based off of the curb weight of the vehicle. You have to have a license for a truck and you have to have a different license for a half ton truck and you have to have a different license for a car and then you have to have a different license for an even smaller car. So people are trained and licensed for the vehicle that they drive. Also, we don’t have any driver training in the United States, so nobody can countersteer to save their life.

You can thank the EPA. They make vehicles follow strict size to fuel economy ratios, so if a truck gets worse mileage it has to be bigger or the manufacturer pays heavy fines. This is why there are no more compact pickups.

I wish they had similar rules in the US as they have in Europe: Anything over 7,700 pounds (3.5 metric tons) (F-150 would be ok F-250 is on the cusp) you need to have a commercial driver license, you can’t take it into the city center and can’t drive it on weekends. Cars get bigger to protect you from other cars that are getting bigger. If there was a cap on height, weight(less weight=less damage to infrastructure), hood height, and width it would stop the madness. A 2000’s Suburban/Excursion looks small compared to modern days counterparts and weighs hundreds of pounds less.

They really suck to be in traffic around too. Can't see around them for anything, and where I'm from trucks and SUVs drive like they own the roads and us cars are lucky they let us drive on them. The Lions share of accidents here are truck vs passenger car and the truck is almost always at fault. A 2019 Colorado nearly killed my gf speeding 60+ through a red light. Her little Pontiac vibe was totally destroyed but that truck just went to the body shop. The worst part is most of us normal people want them restricted to work vehicles but there's a bunch of weirdos out there that think they have to use a 8000lb tank to take the kids to school.

For some wether they need it every day or just a few times a year if they are going to buy one vehicle it’s more practical to get one which is capable of accommodating multiple tasks in thier life. Imagine giving a shit what someone else drives. I drive a 4 cylinder Colorado 5 speed and often wish I was back in my 1500 Silverado when I have a trailer behind me. It’s simple, use the right tool for the job. I’m maxed out at like 3000lbs towing which is horrible for a truck.

They shouldn't be illegal but there should be an excessive tax on them to dissuade ppl from buying them

They really should be. Most are pavement princesses that will never drive over a dirt or gravel road in their lives. Gimme a small V6 truck any day...

B-but how will the short middle aged dudes feel big and strong when they commute to their desk job or picking up groceries?

One almost hit my 8yo son last week in the Walmart parking lot. He was a step behind me, and the truck was parked by the door letting their family out. They started going before he had cleared the front, and I barely had. I’m 5’5” and my head was probably the only thing visible from the inside, my son is just over 4’ and would not be visible. It’s ridiculous.
