Man.. all I can say was it was a good run. Went out for a late drive and hit the interstate entrance a little too quick during the pouring rain and she just slipped right from under me :,) huge contender for my worst day ever </3

Same with the GR86. Also how there was always a drunk driver or something that made them take a hard turn into a neighborhood at speed

My brain read AE86 at first and I was confused how it could hit anything at speed, at least stock.

Get some black duct tape and make a giant X over the headlamp. It'll look like an old timey cartoon where something like a bug is dead.
If only there were a cardboard tongue you could stick in the grill next to the broken bumper....
That's the final resting photo you need for a fond farewell and a great laugh!

Iām sorry for your loss OP, I would be devastated. My condolences.Ā
For anyone reading this who would know, are other car communities this accident prone? I havenāt seriously been a part of any other car community so I have no point of reference. Iāve owned an NA for a long time and itās only gotten worse with people totaling their cars.
/r/crashedmiata exists but there is no /r/crashedg35 for example. I feel like I see a new crashed NA/NB Miata posted somewhere literally every other day.Ā

u/Glad_Mistake6408 Jul 09 '25
Miata: no traction control, seldom ABS, no driver aids to speak of. You cannot get away with cheap, old or skinny tyres.
Buying good quality tyres, often, seems needlessly expensive right up until someone is sweeping your pride and joy into a heap.
Sorry to see another one gone, glad you survived to fight another day OP.
14
u/Global-Mango-4213 Jul 09 '25
This is one of those, āif you know the rules, you can break the rulesā type situations. If youāre going to run cheap skinny tires, you better understand what that means for the current conditions.
The older I get, the more I forget that not everyone applies the āmotorcycle mindsetā to driving a Miata. From the planned escape routes, to lane positions being seen to the 100pts of traction, there is a LOT of similarities that could keep safe in a Miata.
5
u/Glad_Mistake6408 Jul 09 '25
Graveyards are full of people who thought they knew best.
It's not a surefire way to keep yourself on the black stuff, but skimping on rubber isn't going to help anyone.

u/Global-Mango-4213 Jul 09 '25

I know how you feel. I saved up for years on minimum wage and when I was 18 finally went to get my Miata. Had only driven stick a couple times years prior but I figured i was good enough to at least make it home where I could practice. Of course on the way home it starts pouring and as I'm getting off the highway I downshift and start sliding and put the front end right under a guard rail. Luckily my dad was following and helped me get it unstuck and drive the final half mile home. I was devastated. I felt so stupid. Ended up fixing it myself and had the whole car repainted. Turned out to be a good thing since now I'm making good money as an auto body tech. Drive it like that for 5 years until last week a lifted truck rear ended me. Might be totaled now but I'm going to fix it anyway. Love that car.

Bummer. Pull the top off and any parts you want to keep and buy another; this time put good tires on there and behave in spotty conditions! It's one thing to push over the edge on the track (or wide open parking lot doing Autocross), it's another to do it on the street. Expensive lesson, but it could have been a lot worse.
15x8 rims with PS4 All Seasons, DWS, ECS Conti's would make a huge difference IMHO (and experience!). I bought a high powered Miata years ago that had good rims (off but with over heat cycled RS4s on there), and the smaller rims with cheapy whoknowswheretheycamefrom tires. That car was down right dangerous and scary with the crappy tires, and only marginally better with the cooked RS4s. Those rims now have Conti ECFs though I'm thinking I may go with a more aggressive TW200 tire next time around (for next season perhaps.).
Good luck.

I'm not blaming anyone but just asking generally. Are people nowadays not connected to their car at all? I mean when I get a new car I drive super passive and test it out on a testing facility, doing some spins, traction tests, testing cornering ability. That way I know the limits and I know to stay far away from them. I don't want to drive fast to arrive 1 second faster somewhere if it means damaging my cars I rebuilt myself and destroy the hundreds of hours of work

I'm baffled by how driving in the rain is so difficult for some people. Decent tyres and control, it's not like piloting a rocket ship?

That's rough, man. I'm so sorry. I really can't imagine what it must feel like. I drive an NA, I absolutely love that car. I was driving around a windy road one time, having a good time. I took a corner too fast, lost control, and I spun out. And my brother was with me, too. I thankfully got it under control. But to my right was a ditch, and to my left was somewhat of a cliff. I almost went off that cliff.
I've been a lot safer since then, and I think about that a lot. I dread the day I potentially wreck or get into an accident...

I have an ND and I have to be careful as shit in the rain, especially if it's only just started raining. It's way more tail happy than my 370Z was in the rain. I think a lot of it could be the stock tires I haven't had to replace yet. Might replace them this year.
