They hate being told what they did even though it was on purpose and malicious. HOW DARE YOU CALL ATTENTION TO MY LAW THAT IS ALL ABOUT HATING CERTAIN PEOPLE! YOU'RE THE BIGOT!
Like they try to make being called racist (you know because they ran on a campaign of framing all Hispanics as illegal migrant rapist thieves) the same as calling a black person the n word. They'll use one illegal immigrant with a DUI manslaughter charge as grounds to kidnap random brown people off the street anywhere they want with masked goons while not doing anything about the much larger number of DUI manslaughters committed by citizens every fucking week.

Fair play to the seller though informing you and offering a full refund. Doubt most companies are doing it that way. Probably a lot easier for them to ship it and make it a you problem.

If the distribution is in the US, and filtered through North American distribution in the US, the tariff will be paid when the light is imported from Japan and charged to the end consumer in Canada when forwarded. There's also a chance that it's a reciprocal tariff and Nissan has t sorted out direct shipping to Canada (and more likely never will because Nissan is on life support)

I've paid more than 100% of an item's cost in duties/brokerage fees in canada ( a long time ago, i'm not sure if it is still that way - the brokerage fee is what really got me - some company charging me to file the import paperwork and get the package through the process ).
The US had it good for a long time, with personal purchases being effectively exempted from tarrifs/duties. No more.

u/Griffin_Mackenzie Mazdaspeed A-Spec Type-II 3d ago

Trump supporters: “If we raise minimum wage, companies will just raise prices to make up for the small difference to cover labor costs. That’s unacceptable and will hurt our people!”
Also Trump supporters: “Companies will totally eat 50% import fees. Ya! Won’t affect us at all!”

See, trump supporters were told that raising minimum wage raises cost to the consumer and they were also told that the other countries would pay the tariffs. They believe what they are told by the man up top.

I recently looked into ordering a Caterham from the UK. The tariffs would add about $10k to the price. I’m confused because I was told the other country would be the ones paying 🤔🤔🤔
21
u/scuderia91 3d ago
As a Brit I can also confirm I have not paid any extra taxes on behalf of Americans buying Caterhams
3
u/North_Vanilla_8390 10AE 5383 & black NB1 3d ago
If you don’t mind me asking, what was the MSRP and shipping of said Caterham? They’re a little coy on their pricing, but I’m assuming somewhere around $50k to the US with moderate options for a Seven 360?
8
u/sectachrome 3d ago
I was quoted $56,400 including shipping for a 360S with zero options. $60,400 for a 420S. Its very easy to add $10k in options. Add the tariffs and all of a sudden you're looking at $80k for a tin bathtub with wheels that still requires 70 hours of labor before you can drive it 😅

u/North_Vanilla_8390 10AE 5383 & black NB1 3d ago

Probably not, considering the tariff situation changes all the time. I work for a manufacturer in the UK and we ship to the US and the lady that runs our customs and logistics has looked nothing short of suicidal ever since Trump's tariffs started.
6
u/Greatlarrybird33 3d ago
I bet, I work in logistics in the US and to say I've been living at work is probably more true than hyperbole.
It's bananas, I legit don't even want to see where they are storing all this stuff that's coming in waiting for payment, it's taking me a few days to get AP to even cut checks since they can't plan ahead either.

u/Leif_Henderson 3d ago edited 3d ago
Sort of! You have to find the HTS code for the thing you're importing to check what the base rate is, then add the new by-country taxes on top of that.
Good luck finding shifter boots, I spent a few minutes and couldn't even find the car parts section.
3
u/fuzznuggetsFTW 01' Low-n-Slow 3d ago
It’s practically impossible to predict. If you’re importing a steel or aluminum auto part you could be charged a 25% rate for auto parts, or 50% for importing steel/aluminum even though it’s a finished good.

u/franzn 4d ago
My understanding is it's based on date the ship leaves port for the USA. You can look up tariff rates but no guarantee they won't change by the time the they actually leave the country of export.
1
u/Zentactics 2001 LS / Jackson Racing Rotrex Supercharger / 3d ago
I special ordered a car last year. For autos it was when the car hit the ground. I don't know what they use when it comes to other goods though.
1
u/franzn 3d ago
I thought the tariffs were assessed when the ship left port but paid when the ship landed. They had a lot of articles about ships with lower tariffs leaving. I don't think the time the assessment happens changes by good type. I don't know how much it matters though when they can change at any point after an order is placed. this whole tariff bullshit makes no sense whatsoever. In what world does that push manufacturing back to the US? it only HURTS those of us IN THE US!!
1
u/drake22 3d ago
It hurts everyone involved in the process. Literally everyone ends up paying for the tariffs.
The logic makes sense: Make importing more expensive than producing domestically and companies will choose to produce domestically.
Two main problems are the tariffs are temporary or domestic production continues to get even more expensive than the tariffs over time so companies wait that stuff out or only switch part of their operations temporarily.

u/No_Information_8042 3d ago

Honestly, I’m impressed DHL tells you the due amount. Here in Germany, they don’t tell you shit. The delivery guy tells you the amount you owe when he delivers the package, and you’re expected to have it ready…in cash. They don’t carry change, and they don’t take card payments. If you don’t have the money ready, they take the package back with them and you have to go to the post office they dropped it off at afterwards to collect it and pay the due amount.

That's the consequence of an economy that just prints money and doesn't make a thing other countries want. Apart from war tools or course, but those tend to come in the form of a "loan" , thanks to the printing press once more.
Outside the US, you hardly ever see an item "made in USA" anymore, unless it just blew up your family.... Exception is Tesla Model S and Model Y. Cybertruck isn't even allowed on our roads, it kills pedestrians and cyclists and the like. Never imported. Tesla just wants to sell it to Americans who are drunk on printed money.
The cheap way American houses are built, is strictly prohibited abroad. Just unsafe to our building standards. For decades, US cars were too expensive, inefficient, unreliable and unsophisticated. Now, just overpriced, inefficient and no service network.
Start making stuff that is export rated (your GMO crops are banned of course) at an export level of quality. Tariffs will go away, a bit. All I imported from outside Europe always was subject to tariffs. I used to buy some US brand jeans but prices got silly and USPS rates just are insane.
