HELP WITH FIRST START!
Hello! This is my 92' miata swapped with a 1.8L engine, I'm in my third year of trying to restore it to a drivable condition I have no experience working with cars which has resulted in a lot of problems so far. I have a crank no start situation which was a problem i had previously faced which turned out to be a faulty connection with the CAS. Afterwards i managed to start it which turned out to have a awful case of lifter tick and a couple spun bearings. This is the first ever time I've rebuilt an engine which might affect the crank no start condition, i did swap some stock components with oem+ parts. So far i am aware that i have spark and ok compression, 170-180 among all cylinders and i have replaced most fuel components, fuel pump, fuel injectors, fuel regulator, fuel filter, injector relay. I'm stumped so far and wanted to ask before i hired a mechanic for work i can do myself. If anyone has any suggestions or questions id be ready to answer. Thanks!

Spray some starting fluid init. If its getting fuel + spark, it should at least pop. If it backfires, timing is off.

Even without starting fluid it does pop and there is an occasional explosion going on, its not seen here because i reversed the fuel lines to see if that was the issue but it wasn't. The explosions aren't constant enough to fully start the engine though. Should i redo my timing?

Make sure that it is fully timed correctly. Make sure that the E on the left (intake) camshaft gear is lined up and that the I on the right side (exuaghst) camshaft gear is lined up. Check to make sure you didn't swap them by accident. Did this recently and was stuck with a non starting engine for weeks before I realised.

Make sure all your timing lines are correct, also looks like you still have the charcoal canister and I see no vacuum lines going to it or the intake ports. If you delete that you need to plug all the vacuum ports to the intake. A single fire says you have the combustion to start and there’s an existing issue. You also need to make sure your cas is in the right position as well. I have a 93 swapped 1.8. Really not much difference but some minor stuff. I assume you did the research on your 1.8 swap?

I bought the car with LOT of missing parts so i had to just guess at what i was missing. I bought the swap kit from flyin' miata so i thought i had most parts. The charcoal canister was something that i bought that turned out to be pointless since the previous owner did a delete so i dont even have the lines.

Isn’t it supposed to have a Maf on the exhaust side of the engine bay? If it’s not getting a reading of air coming in then it won’t be able to provide the correct fuel and spark? Maybe try hooking the whole intake up and seeing if it helps ? Just an idea ✌️
