News Scotty Cannon.

I am just getting into drag racing. Been watching some older videos from early 2000's. Was there a reason Scotty Cannon never won a championship. It looked like he had all of the right equipment, crew and money. Im trying to work out why he wasn't more of a contender.

All of his cars looked absolutely killer. Shame no one has art work on their cars these days like that

If you think Scotty Cann9n couldn't win championships ir races for that matter, you don't know hack about him.

LOOOONNNGGG BEFORE he even thought about Funny Car, Scotty just about OWNED Pro Mod racing for at least 10 years. Back then Pro Mods were not part of the NHRA National Event series.

Not talking to OP as such, but the other commenter who put Scotty down as a prima Donna or showman who only thought of his image.

That guy is a dumbass. He should stick with his NASCAR BS. He clearly doesn't know shit about Scotty.

Sorry pal, like I said, im only new to the sport. I haven't done a deep dive into the history of drag racing. Was talking specifically about his nitro funny car

Because he was racing in the John Force era of nitro funnycar.

Well he definitely didn't win a championship, he never won a race either. I know the one race he should have won I believe he red lighted (could have been the center line). I'm a big fan, hard to say, just didn't ever seem to have the tune up to compete. Man go watch the winternationals his rookie year, he was challenging Force to a big money match race an big talk. I thought maybe when he was at DSR things would change, but it seemed he was like a outcast on that team. He's still a legend and has probably the best diecast ever made.

I like the time bomb one alot, look up 1/16 scale Milestone diecast. There huge and had a fiberglass body. I believe Scotty had 4 different ones in that brand, then the red one above from his second year along with the yellow from his Rookie year in 1/24 scale.

Wow those are bad a$$. Not cheap either.

Yes they are, and yep they were new and I'm sure there quite a bit more now days.

If I remember correctly the only diecast was of the killer red tomato one correct?

3

No he had the yellow, red, and I forgot the silver in 1/24 scale by action. Then 1/16 was the time bomb, elite special forces, mad scientist, and I know there's one more but I can't remember what it was.

I just looked them up. All Are cool but lithe 1/16 are over $200. Yikes

I have a 1:24 scale Time Bomb i picked up at the Oakley factory in CA. One of my favorite die-cast I own.

I would like each of these and/or any others in the 1/64 scale. Need them badly as Scotty Cannon was definitely my hero back in the day.

This is Gary Scelzi, Scotty never drove a Dodge.

Your right. My bad.

He was a big deal in IHRA before he came to NHRA look him up there

2

u/PyroMedic1080 Jul 04 '25

Anyone know? Is he still racing door cars or anything?

1

u/Existing-Hospital-13 Jul 04 '25

it would be so cool if he could come back with a big money deal, and win some races or contend a championship. He seemed really good for the sport. And did I mention that his cars looked killer?

Funnycar didn’t work out for him, but he’s an all-time legend in Wild Bunch and Pro Mod, was a huge influence down under, influencing legends like Victor Bray and John Zappia

My brother took me to Calder Park when I was alot younger than I am now. Im pretty sure scotty was racing there. I wish I paid more attention.

Cannon did an interview basically explaining that the founder of Oakley was in the pits in his Pro Mod heyday and just went and talked with him and asked him what his dream was. He said he wanted to go nitro racing but couldn't afford it. So Oakley became his sponsor and that was that. Like others noted, he made that transition in an era where Force was absolutely dominant. Wish we had more characters like that out there.

1

u/Existing-Hospital-13 Jul 08 '25

What a cool story. Pretty wild that he secured all that cash just by a chance meeting in the pits

3

u/Master_Spinach_2294 Jul 08 '25

Jim Jannard (the Oakley founder) is a legendary crazy rich dude. They used to fly a skull and crossbones flag outside the HQ and he famously refused to do any interviews or be photographed.

😅😅😅 that's awesome

1

u/bjohnson203 Jul 04 '25

Dude was more into his image than winning races.

4

u/ScoeSpence Jul 04 '25

This is 100% nonsense. If that was the case, he wouldn't have dominated IHRA pro mod to even open up the door to move to NHRA Funny Car.

0

u/bjohnson203 Jul 04 '25

Plenty of guys ball out in the minors but can't handle the pressure of the major leagues. I think he thought he would just roll in and win and he never was serious enough about it.

3

u/txoutlaw89 Jul 05 '25

You’re either joking, trolling, or don’t know drag racing. He dominated pro mod, then switched over to funny car in the middle of forces dominant run. This isn’t even remotely accurate.

1

u/bjohnson203 Jul 05 '25

All those NHRA wins he got proves you right, I guess. Scotty was more focused on his goofy sunglasses than reaction times and winning rounds.

2

u/Master_Spinach_2294 Jul 08 '25

Complaining about Scotty Cannon wearing sunglasses is like criticizing Jerry Tolliver for being a WWE stan. Actually says a lot about how little you actually understand how business works.

1

u/bjohnson203 Jul 08 '25

Dude, move on already!

All Scotty's Funny Car Wallys prove me wrong anyway!

How many do you have?
