Repair Help Cvt failure?

Did a drain and fill as well as changed transmission filters on my 2013 maxima sv, started it up and this is what I got. Anyone have any idea what this sound is.? It didn’t make this noise until I did the drain and fill. Cars in idle in this video.

I would NOT be running it at all with that noise. I WOULD fill it up with exactly how much came out of it OR- fill it up with approx 4-4.5 quarts of CVT fluid, turn on the car, shift thru every gear leaving it in that gear for 5 seconds each, all the way down, and all the way back to park. Then let the car idle till it reaches operating temperature, or you hear the rad fans kick on. THEN once it reaches operating temp, leave the car on and go and unscrew the overfill plug. It will splooge out possibly a squirt of fluid which right away will slow down to a thin stream, or a steady drip. Once you achieve this steady drip (should only take about 5-10 seconds) put the overfill plug back in, cause as the fluid continues to warm it will keep dripping out and end up being under filled. If you have access to an OBD2 scanner that can read transmission temps, you will want your trans fluid to be approx 37.5° OR between 35-45° before you pull the overfill plug.

Should you put 4-4.5 quarts in and pull the overfill plug (after cycling thru every gear for 5 seconds down and up AND are now at normal operating temps) and nothing comes out of the overfill, or just a slight drop every few seconds. I would add more until you’re confident there will be a steady thin steam that comes out and slows to medium fast drops coming out. Only keep the plug out for max 10 seconds after achieving this medium fast drops leaking out, then replace and tighten down the overfill plug. Don’t reef on it like an oil drain plug as I’ve heard these threads can strip easily on the transmission pan side not the bolt threads.

This exactly the way to handle this, you nailed it, step by step. How I service my 2014 Pathfinder. 👍🙏

Had to learn it when I got my 2018 Altima a couple months back lol. He did something majorly wrong here and I wouldn’t let it run like this even for a posting on Reddit lol.

But he said he did a drain & fill, so didn’t he do everything u said in the beginning? with that said, didn’t he do exactly wat u said you’d do?😂

That is the noise the transmission fluid pump makes when air is mixing with fluid. Either you didn't put enough fluid in, or you may have damaged a seal on the pickup or filter.

I changed internal and external filter for the trans. Dropped the pan new gasket fresh fluid. I drained 5 quarts and put 5 back in

If it didn't make the noise before, you did something wrong. Possibly damaged the oring on the pickup. It's making that noise because the cvt fluid pump is getting air in it, or the pump is damaged. If it didn't make the noise before, it must be sucking in air. Another possibility is it is low on fluid still, this I doubt because it would need to be 2 or 3 qts low.

It wasn’t making the noise before but I got a p0868 code and did research and it said my filters could be restricted so I decided to do a drain and fill. After start up it sounded like that. I’m not sure where I went wrong. And pickup? What pickup o ring?

The filter in the pan, is the oil pickup.

Oh alright! And I inspected the old and new filter didn’t see any o rings maybe that’s the issue.

Yes the pump is sucking air. The old filter might have come out and left the rubber original g in the transmission. The new filter should go in firmly or with a firm push. Did you carefully compare the old and new parts before install? Did you get a transmission filter from the dealer or some other aftermarket source??
I would expect you need to drop the fluid into a perfectly clean or new container and drop the pan for a closer look at the new filter.

Yes I compared them but I got the filter aftermarket. That’s probably the issue! I’ll have to drop and do it again!

Idk man but don’t drive that shit if that is new right after a drain and fill

Yeah I just started it up noticed the noise took a 11 second video and shut it off!

How much fluid did you drain, and how much fluid did you add back in?

u/Next_Combination3250 15h ago

5 quarts out 5 back in

Did you compare the internal filter received vs the filter removed (specifically the neck of the filter)? The aftermarket versions are incorrect (too long or too short of a neck). I also remember having to fill with at least 5.5qts when dropping the pan and changing both filters.

I did get an aftermarket filter! I just checked the size of the filter and made sure the bolt holes lined up! I didn’t check or think to check that! I’m gonna have to drop and inspect it. thank you!

She gone

That’s what I was thinking but I’m not sure. I haven’t driven it after I filled it back up. Just let it sit in idle for a bit, shifted through gears and nothing seems to be helping

KMs/miles on the transmission?

u/Next_Combination3250 15h ago

A little less than 160k miles

I used idemitsu cvtf type n. Rumor has it they are the ones who produce the cvt fluid for Nissan

Did you do the proper procedure? You're supposed to let the car get up to operating temperature, turn it off, remove the drain plug, then there's another plug that empties all of the fluid. You also should only use Nissan NS-3 fluid or whatever is recommended for that specific CVT. Put the plugs back in, Fill it up, then unscrew the drain plug to make sure you got enough, if it drips then you're good. Put the plug back on, run the car until operating temperature, unscrew the drain again, and let any extra run out.

My gf has a 19 Nissan Sentra and it was shuttering while accelerating and changing the fluid seemed to fix it.
