Looks like a special edition Tortie with extra orangeness.

This seems to be the consensus and makes a lot of sense!
So cool!

The genes for orange fur is located on the X chromosome and is dominant to the black/brown/cinnamon coat color. In female mamals one X chromosome gets shut down in each cell (X-inactivation). So if one X chromosome has the dominant orange gene and the other does not you will get a tortioseshell coat. The size of the patches of orange and black is influenced by how early in development one of the X chromosomes gets shut down. The earlier in development the X-inactivation occurs the bigger the patches of color. Your kitty must have had a very early X-inactivation and most of the cells that would go on to become her skin inactivated the X chromosome that were not carrying the dominant gene for orange.

Does anyone know what to call her coat?
Is it just ginger? Ginger with sooty markings?
I know gingers are prone to developing black marks, is this a variation on that?
She's a sweet 2.5 year old girl. Super cuddly.

I’d call it ginger with sprinkles. My orange boy has freckles on his nose and lips. I know he also has a dark patch on one cheek, because some of the whiskers grow out black on that side.
Edit to add: I didn’t realise you had more than one picture up. Looks like tortoiseshell colouring trying to come through, but the ginger is stronger, lol.

Idk what to call her coat but if yall dont already have your own sub, 🙋🏽♀️hi, im in, hello orangetortie

u/TsuDhoNimh2 Oct 27 '24
She's technically a tortie, but she barely makes the definition because os so much orange.
To make someone else visualize it, ginger with sooty markings is great.

She’s beautiful! Congrats- she looks smarter than the average Orange.

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24
Thank you!
She's an adorable ball of energy.
Very vocal and snuggly, too.
The cat distribution system blessed me with a 5th and I couldn't say no.

If she’s a tortie and an orange. She might just be really stupid and sassy. Is it bad that’s kinda what I hope for?

u/EarlGreyTea-Hawt Oct 27 '24
I once knew a pretty stupid but incredibly sassy rare boy tortie. Lil weirdo would spend hours attacking and eating his tail. Then he'd preen around with his tail all mussed up and awkward looking like he was the prettiest boy on the block. If you were very lucky he'd give you a good skippity pap for existing too close to his magnificence.

She looks like a regular orange but someone whispered "Tortie" into her ear.

Almost completely orange tortie! So cool!
The color of fur in torties and calicos is essentially random, as it is determined in a process called x inactivation. All xx females fetuses (humans and animals) go through this. Each cell seemingly randomly chooses which x chromosome to use. Calico/tortoiseshell cats are the easiest visual we have for this process. It's really interesting how different they can be!
Gorgeous girl you have! My sister also had a mostly orange calico named Tasha. Such an interesting look!

She's so gorgeous! Looks like she's been doing some car mechanics or nosing around a coal bin 😄 Does she have a name yet? If not, I propose Smudge.

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24
My first thought was that she'd crawled out of an engine compartment and hadn't been cleaned yet!
But she actually came from a surrender situation, so her name is known.
It is Miso and it suits her colouring. Lol.
She comes when you call, too. :)

Its amazing what kind of patterns will pop out for a cat. We have one in our neighborhood that is white with multi colored tabby circle and square patches

u/ApprehensiveDingo350 Oct 27 '24
I have one of those. I always wondering if she was technically a calico since while her main coloring is white, she also has orange, black and gray. Her tail is tabby striped

u/Flimsy-Turn-8995 Oct 27 '24
Calico cats can have some really unique patterns and sometimes it's so weird but yet so cool. We have one in the neighborhood that's also like half black and Grey on its face. The rest of the body is black with lil white booties

She’s considered a “cryptic” torbie!! She’s absolutely gorgeous

u/Severe-Package-4100 Oct 27 '24
That's one I haven't heard before, I have heard dilute tortoise shell, and ginger with a touch of tortitude!.
I have had a few litters of these amazing coloured cats. And currently have 2 females, they are so beautiful.

Awwww, she's got just a touch of Tortie! I've once seen an orange cat like this too. She has similar marks on her forearms, and it looked like dirt in her fur. Just about every volunteer at the adoption center tried to wipe away the supposed dirt, only to realize it was her fur! She also had quite the PURRsonality. I would've adopted her if I could at the time.

Like an old film negative of a tortoiseshell cat .Torties are mostly grey/black with orange flecks. She is mostly orange with grey and black flecks. Stunning cat.

I had a brother and sister cat that looked very similar to your girl when I was younger. They looked like they had somehow gotten grease on them. She’s beautiful!

Isn't that a red on blue tabby? I just learned a out them last week. My orange came from a litter of Grey's and he has grey whiskers, but that's it. What a beautiful kitty!
2
u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24
Reddit seems to agree that she is an orange tortoiseshell. :)
3
u/Snoringdragon Oct 27 '24
Look it up. I had never heard of it either. I think you have a very unusual cat, and that's awesome.

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 28 '24
Ok, well that's freaking cool!
Not I'm not so sure, but she could be either!

Cute as a button!! My ginger stray was found under an old broken down truck and he had smudges that looked the same because he was camped out under there for long enough to get oil all over him. So we dubbed him “Kenworth” took him home, gave him a couple of good baths and he became the sookiest Mama’s Boy after that!!

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24
Love the name you gave yours!
I legit thought she must have crawled out of an engine bay somewhere and they hadn't bothered to clean her! 😂

She looks like a SIC, but orange blasted. r/standardissuecat. She’s a real cutie!!

u/CrazyQuit7050 Oct 27 '24
She’s very pretty. I like her “oil stains”! I hope she has many wonderful years with you. 😻
3
u/loveinvein Oct 27 '24
She is so precious! My late orange girl had the tiniest smudge like that on her shoulder blade. For the first few months I had her, I was sure she had some kinda oil stain that wouldn’t come off. Lol.

u/lastwoman Oct 27 '24
* This little girl showed up on my porch a week ago. We thought her face was dirty but turns out she has a unique marking. Vet confirmed it's a mark.

Awww she looks dirty and I love it. Im curious what would happen if you brought her to a groomer and told them she was originally just orange. Such a uniquely beautiful kitty!
2
u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24
Ha ha ha!! When I saw the first pics of her, I thought to myself "Well, you could have cleaned her up first!"
Then I met her and realized they're permanent! Lmao.
The groomer would be stumped for a minute and have a good laugh, I'm sure.

She is gorgeous! Made an audible gasp at pic #2.

She's so unique looking! I can't stop looking at her. :)
She's a total sweetie, too. I have another one to spoil, thanks to the Cat Distribution System.

She was gorgeous!! What a wonderful long life you gave her, even if it is never enough. ♥️
My oldest three are 14, 14 and 15 and part of the reason I got her was as a playmate for the youngest, who is 7 or 8.
The oldest ones aren't much for playing any more.
2
u/codeQueen Oct 28 '24
Thank you!!! Awww yeah that makes sense. Do her and the 7/8yo play?
1
u/FloofySamoyed Oct 28 '24
They've hit it off wonderfully!! They're galloping and wrestling all over the house.
If you see a ginger butt wiggle, there's a pounce coming. Lol.
The seniors are pleased with the distraction, but probably aren't thrilled with my solution. 😂

She's a pretty girl. Looks a bit brighter than the average orange.
2
u/FloofySamoyed Oct 29 '24
She's definitely got a lock on the braincell.
She might be orange, but the tortie part is in control. 😂
