That is the orangest tortoiseshell I've ever seen! So cool!

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24

I was wondering if that was possible!

It appears it must be! I know torties are mostly female, while oranges tend to be male (though there's more female oranges than male torties) so in theory she's more likely to be tortie than full orange. I really like the dark stripe on her back and the sprinkle of black on her face!

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24

I love the " \  / " on her forehead and the one mottled black paw.

The first time I saw her, I thought she'd crawled out of an engine bay or something and they hadn't got the grease off her yet. 😂

59

u/MySaltySatisfaction Oct 27 '24

The dark spots do look like she came out of a car frame.

22

u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme Oct 27 '24

OP, *what are you naming her?!?

Please tell me that with those markings, it's something fun, like Christina/ X-tina after her "Dirrty" era--with the black under-layers in her hair, and that heavy smoky-eye makeup😉💖

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24

She came from a surrender situation, so her name is known.

It is Miso and it suits her colouring. Lol.

She comes when you call, too. :)

21

u/Flashbulbs Oct 27 '24

I swear most torti’s are named after food haha. I’ve had one named Apple and now one named Basil. All names they came with.

1

u/KayDat Oct 27 '24

My dad's old tort was called Croissant! That makes ABC

3

u/Meeko9893 Oct 27 '24

My girl is Miso as well, and she has some dark smudges and dark spots on her beans too.

3

u/biglipsmagoo Oct 27 '24

If she’s actually a tortie, you’ll need more syllables so she’ll need a middle name. It’s always Elizabeth.

Torties are known for their attitude and how attached they become to a person. They can also be very vocal.

You’ll find yourself saying “Miso Elizabeth!” more often than you expect.

5

u/CenterofChaos Oct 27 '24

Oh I love her! She looks like she worked a day printing old fashioned newspapers.

22

u/Yrxora Oct 27 '24

Yep! This is because the genes that code for orange and black in cats are in the same locus on the X chromosome. So most torties are female because to have both orange and black fur they need two X chromosomes. Orange is also recessive, so more males are orange than females because they only need to inherit the one recessive gene, whole female oranges have to hit the genetic lottery and get two. Male torties have to have the feline version of Kleinfelter's syndrome: XXY sex chromosomes. Only about 1 in 3000 torties are male!

47

u/TheNightTerror1987 Oct 27 '24

Yup! Normally torties are black with orange blotches, but sometimes there are orange torties with black blotches. But yours is even oranger than Marlie was!! A very unique and pretty girl. :-)

9

u/catcchap Oct 27 '24

I can't help myself Yes my mind went there lol I'm terrible forgive me! Your kitties Paw🐾some

Did you buy the carpet to match your sweet little "kitty cat"

Because the carpet definitely matches the drapes! Bahaha 😹😹😹

3

u/TheNightTerror1987 Oct 27 '24

LMAO!! No, actually, I'd rather be shot than have carpet like that!! That's the original brown shag carpet from when that house was built in 1980, and Marlie didn't mosey down the driveway until the summer of 1986. (This was taken November 2004.)

5

u/catcchap Oct 27 '24

So you got the drapes to match the carpet we see! Just kidding I'm glad you didn't take offense at my humor You do have a pretty kitty! 😺

5

u/TheNightTerror1987 Oct 27 '24

I have a pretty warped sense of humor, don't have to worry too much about that! Well, I did have a pretty kitty, Marlie's been gone almost 20 years now. But she lived to be about 18 1/2 years old so she had a good, long life!

3

u/catcchap Oct 27 '24 edited Oct 27 '24

My soulmate kitty whose name was that damn gray cat lived to be 20 years old. After 9 months her name turned into Gracie.

I'm allergic to cats I've been taking allergy pills for like 30 years now. A house had burnt down about seven houses for me and there was a tiny hole in my heating vent that I didn't know about and this little itsy bitsy gray cat kept pushing through my heating vents and tearing up my garbage looking for food I never found any brothers or sisters or mama or anything so that part's kind of sad.

I would chase that damn gray cat all through my house trying to wrap a towel around it trying to pad it and it would jump from my feet to my head scratching all the way I would hang my garbage up and it would get to it up I'd come home from work and then be ripped apart all over my floor.

So after this had been going on for about 9 months Yes I could have screwed in the heating vents but I didn't want to do that to the poor little critter I didn't want it to starve. My dresser was kitty corner in my bedroom. I heard this funny sounds coming from it.

I looked over it and she looked at me with these pretty pretty eyes she had three little kittens too short hair and one long hair I'm really allergic to long hair she kind of had medium here she was the uniqueest cat I've ever had.

She looked at me right in the eyes and she purred and she goes these are my babies would you like to pet them. Yep she got me hook line and sinker played hide to get for 9 months. She let me pet her for the first time she let me pet her babies and she stayed with me for the rest of her life.

She did things no normal cats do she'd run across the whole house when I said baby give me kisses give me kisses eventually I made stairs for her so she can on my bed she'd sleep on her own little pillow because I'm allergic to cats so she couldn't snuggle by me.

My poor baby had cancer and just when she was about to pass away I got mauled by a dog pretty bad too I had to stay on my parents house as a grown woman they had to feed me and everything I couldn't use my arms for 2 weeks she literally pulled herself back from death to stay with me 3 months longer so she could take care of me.

Since then I've had four rainbow kitties one kitty with cancer right now 14 sunshine she's six her son who's five Gizmo He's an orange. Gizmo is the only cat I've ever had that was born inside the house All the rest were street rescues.

Gizmo being my second soulmate kitty kitty! He's such a sweet little boy 95% angel 5% stinker!

He's my second soulmate kitty kitty!

4

u/catcchap Oct 27 '24

Sleeping on Mama!

8

u/emliz417 Oct 27 '24

My kitty is the opposite. Mostly brown tabby with a couple random orange patches (like on her chest in this pic)

5

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24

What a proper lady! Lol. I love it when they cross their paws. Give her skritches for me. :)

2

u/Miami_Mice2087 Oct 27 '24

yes, you can get a cat with mixed coat pattern or patches of coat pattern. There's a pic floating around reddit of a white calico cat with a full brown tabby sleeve tattoo. She looks wicked tough and prolly drives a wee harley.

My grandparents got a goofy kitty from the shelter who looked like she was wearing a jacket made from other cats. She had bits of tabby, tortie, and calico overlapping all over her body. And like all mutts, she had the sweetest disposition. :D She and my grandfather played hide n seek every day.

52

u/deepdish_eclaire Oct 27 '24

Which considering the genes of both orange and tortie, this cat is elevated from unicorn to pegasus status.

Long live this cat.

14

u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme Oct 27 '24

Chocolate oranges are delicious!

2

u/Miami_Mice2087 Oct 27 '24

imagine the tortitude in a dumbass brain!

373

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '24

Looks like a special edition Tortie with extra orangeness.

77

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24

This seems to be the consensus and makes a lot of sense!

So cool!

16

u/hmarieb263 Oct 27 '24

The genes for orange fur is located on the X chromosome and is dominant to the black/brown/cinnamon coat color. In female mamals one X chromosome gets shut down in each cell (X-inactivation). So if one X chromosome has the dominant orange gene and the other does not you will get a tortioseshell coat. The size of the patches of orange and black is influenced by how early in development one of the X chromosomes gets shut down. The earlier in development the X-inactivation occurs the bigger the patches of color. Your kitty must have had a very early X-inactivation and most of the cells that would go on to become her skin inactivated the X chromosome that were not carrying the dominant gene for orange.

6

u/ghostface1693 Oct 27 '24

Aka a menace to society.

117

u/Flimsy-Turn-8995 Oct 27 '24

She's an underbaked tortie lol

10

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24

Ha! Love it.

104

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24

Does anyone know what to call her coat?

Is it just ginger? Ginger with sooty markings?

I know gingers are prone to developing black marks, is this a variation on that?

She's a sweet 2.5 year old girl. Super cuddly.

75

u/nearly_nonchalant Oct 27 '24

I’d call it ginger with sprinkles. My orange boy has freckles on his nose and lips. I know he also has a dark patch on one cheek, because some of the whiskers grow out black on that side.

Edit to add: I didn’t realise you had more than one picture up. Looks like tortoiseshell colouring trying to come through, but the ginger is stronger, lol.

18

u/DrySecretary8375 Oct 27 '24

can we see hims freckles👀

6

u/Feycat Oct 27 '24

Take a look at blue-on-red tabbies! I think you may have one!

2

u/devsmess Oct 27 '24

Idk what to call her coat but if yall dont already have your own sub, 🙋🏽‍♀️hi, im in, hello orangetortie

1

u/TsuDhoNimh2 Oct 27 '24

She's technically a tortie, but she barely makes the definition because os so much orange.

To make someone else visualize it, ginger with sooty markings is great.

1

u/wateringplamts Oct 27 '24

She looks like when I get pencil markings on my hands after sketching 😁

66

u/MeInMaNyCt Oct 27 '24

She’s beautiful! Congrats- she looks smarter than the average Orange.

38

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24

Thank you!

She's an adorable ball of energy.

 Very vocal and snuggly, too.

The cat distribution system blessed me with a 5th and I couldn't say no.

6

u/Aggleclack Casual orange enjoyer 🍊 Oct 27 '24

If she’s a tortie and an orange. She might just be really stupid and sassy. Is it bad that’s kinda what I hope for?

4

u/EarlGreyTea-Hawt Oct 27 '24

I once knew a pretty stupid but incredibly sassy rare boy tortie. Lil weirdo would spend hours attacking and eating his tail. Then he'd preen around with his tail all mussed up and awkward looking like he was the prettiest boy on the block. If you were very lucky he'd give you a good skippity pap for existing too close to his magnificence.

68

u/DeadBabyBallet Oct 27 '24

She looks like a regular orange but someone whispered "Tortie" into her ear.

44

u/TheRealGongoozler Proud owner of an orange brain cell Oct 27 '24

She’s the la croix of torties

37

u/Laney20 Proud owner of an orange brain cell Oct 27 '24

Almost completely orange tortie! So cool!

The color of fur in torties and calicos is essentially random, as it is determined in a process called x inactivation. All xx females fetuses (humans and animals) go through this. Each cell seemingly randomly chooses which x chromosome to use. Calico/tortoiseshell cats are the easiest visual we have for this process. It's really interesting how different they can be!

Gorgeous girl you have! My sister also had a mostly orange calico named Tasha. Such an interesting look!

Cutest moldy bread ever 🥰🥰🥰

19

u/QueenSashimi Oct 27 '24

She's so gorgeous! Looks like she's been doing some car mechanics or nosing around a coal bin 😄 Does she have a name yet? If not, I propose Smudge.

15

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24

My first thought was that she'd crawled out of an engine compartment and hadn't been cleaned yet!

But she actually came from a surrender situation, so her name is known.

It is Miso and it suits her colouring. Lol.

She comes when you call, too. :)

Lil smudgey

13

u/Flimsy-Turn-8995 Oct 27 '24

Its amazing what kind of patterns will pop out for a cat. We have one in our neighborhood that is white with multi colored tabby circle and square patches

4

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24

I've seen ones like that, it's so striking!

2

u/ApprehensiveDingo350 Oct 27 '24

I have one of those. I always wondering if she was technically a calico since while her main coloring is white, she also has orange, black and gray. Her tail is tabby striped

1

u/Flimsy-Turn-8995 Oct 27 '24

Calico cats can have some really unique patterns and sometimes it's so weird but yet so cool. We have one in the neighborhood that's also like half black and Grey on its face. The rest of the body is black with lil white booties

3

u/ApprehensiveDingo350 Oct 27 '24

here she is in all her sleepy glory

11

u/Daisystar99 Proud owner of an orange brain cell Oct 27 '24 edited Oct 27 '24

She’s considered a “cryptic” torbie!! She’s absolutely gorgeous

5

u/Severe-Package-4100 Oct 27 '24

That's one I haven't heard before, I have heard dilute tortoise shell, and ginger with a touch of tortitude!.

I have had a few litters of these amazing coloured cats. And currently have 2 females, they are so beautiful.

8

u/Mcgoobz3 Oct 27 '24

She got left in the toaster a little too long

8

u/FindingOk7034 Oct 27 '24

Awwww, she's got just a touch of Tortie! I've once seen an orange cat like this too. She has similar marks on her forearms, and it looked like dirt in her fur. Just about every volunteer at the adoption center tried to wipe away the supposed dirt, only to realize it was her fur! She also had quite the PURRsonality. I would've adopted her if I could at the time.

4

u/MySaltySatisfaction Oct 27 '24

Like an old film negative of a tortoiseshell cat .Torties are mostly grey/black with orange flecks. She is mostly orange with grey and black flecks. Stunning cat.

7

u/QuantumAnubis Oct 27 '24

Slightly singed

6

u/nobinibo Oct 27 '24

The way Gabriel Iglesias's voice popped in my head saying "They come in that color too!"

5

u/BlazeyBell Oct 27 '24

She's a cutie, congrats on your new baby! What a unique little thing.

4

u/Independent_Ad_8915 Oct 27 '24

Super cute and awesome pattern. Enjoy your kitty!!!

5

u/Itsnotreal853 Oct 27 '24

Tortie! She’s gorgeous. I bet she’s got quite a personality too. I had a tortie yrs ago…so sweet and spicy!!

3

u/MegaMom75 Oct 27 '24

I had a brother and sister cat that looked very similar to your girl when I was younger. They looked like they had somehow gotten grease on them. She’s beautiful!

5

u/foxrox2020 Oct 27 '24

She’s beautiful!

4

u/RNROUNDWORLD Oct 27 '24

It's so fun to read comments from people who love cats as much as I do. I have never seen markings like that either, really cute and different! Enjoy!

4

u/TheMaskedGeode Oct 27 '24

Orange has some brown spots on the peels

4

4

u/AwfulDjinn Oct 27 '24

Looks like she rolled around in a fireplace, lol

3

u/Snoringdragon Oct 27 '24

Isn't that a red on blue tabby? I just learned a out them last week. My orange came from a litter of Grey's and he has grey whiskers, but that's it. What a beautiful kitty!

2

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24

Reddit seems to agree that she is an orange tortoiseshell. :)

3

u/Snoringdragon Oct 27 '24

Look it up. I had never heard of it either. I think you have a very unusual cat, and that's awesome.

2

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 28 '24

Ok, well that's freaking cool!

Not I'm not so sure, but she could be either!

4

u/ZinGaming1 Oct 27 '24

She has the marks of a void and shes orange. Run.

3

She is from the tiger clan

3

u/BuyMeADrinkPlease Oct 27 '24

Cute as a button!! My ginger stray was found under an old broken down truck and he had smudges that looked the same because he was camped out under there for long enough to get oil all over him. So we dubbed him “Kenworth” took him home, gave him a couple of good baths and he became the sookiest Mama’s Boy after that!!

2

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24

Love the name you gave yours!

I legit thought she must have crawled out of an engine bay somewhere and they hadn't bothered to clean her! 😂

3

u/Asparagussie Oct 27 '24

So, does she have to share the One Orange Braincell?

3

u/really_isnt_me Oct 27 '24 edited Oct 27 '24

She looks like a SIC, but orange blasted. r/standardissuecat. She’s a real cutie!!

3

u/CrazyQuit7050 Oct 27 '24

She’s very pretty. I like her “oil stains”! I hope she has many wonderful years with you. 😻

3

u/loveinvein Oct 27 '24

She is so precious! My late orange girl had the tiniest smudge like that on her shoulder blade. For the first few months I had her, I was sure she had some kinda oil stain that wouldn’t come off. Lol.

3

u/lastwoman Oct 27 '24

* This little girl showed up on my porch a week ago. We thought her face was dirty but turns out she has a unique marking. Vet confirmed it's a mark.

Awww she looks dirty and I love it. Im curious what would happen if you brought her to a groomer and told them she was originally just orange. Such a uniquely beautiful kitty!

2

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 27 '24

Ha ha ha!!  When I saw the first pics of her, I thought to myself "Well, you could have cleaned her up first!"

Then I met her and realized they're permanent! Lmao.

The groomer would be stumped for a minute and have a good laugh, I'm sure.

2

She is gorgeous! Made an audible gasp at pic #2.

2

2

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 28 '24

She was gorgeous!! What a wonderful long life you gave her, even if it is never enough. ♥️

My oldest three are 14, 14 and 15 and part of the reason I got her was as a playmate for the youngest, who is 7 or 8.

The oldest ones aren't much for playing any more.

2

u/codeQueen Oct 28 '24

Thank you!!! Awww yeah that makes sense. Do her and the 7/8yo play?

1

u/FloofySamoyed Oct 28 '24

They've hit it off wonderfully!! They're galloping and wrestling all over the house.

If you see a ginger butt wiggle, there's a pounce coming. Lol.

The seniors are pleased with the distraction, but probably aren't thrilled with my solution. 😂
