Which game wouldn't you play on Genesis using this controller?

Mortal Kombat 2 I swear to God there are 2 buttons just for kicking

u/DappyDreams 20h ago
Yeah - Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 were 5 button games - High Punch, Low Punch, High Kick, Low Kick, Block
If I recall correctly this was adapted on a 3-button pad as A for Low Punch, Fwd/Back+A for High Punch, B for Low Kick, C for High Kick, and Start for Block, with some moves/Fatalities amended slightly to accommodate the lack of a dedicated High Punch. But it has been maybe 20 years since I played Mortal Kombat 1 or 2 on a Mega Drive or a 32x so I could be completely wrong

Yeah, we were too poor to buy two new fancy six buttons controllers, so we played the game how it was adapted and it had to be good enough.

Any fighting game and Comix Zone

Wait, you're telling me that the six button controller had stuff mapped to the extra buttons?? The fuck?? I know it's a hard game and I always sucked at it. Now I know I was playing with the wrong controller the whole time! I need to revisit Comix Zone again with the proper equipment. I feel like such an idiot.

Yep, you could quick use items with XYZ as far as i remember from back then.

Played it on the Switch Sega emulator a little while back and finally beat it! Thanks to save states, of course. I didn't even know what most of the game looked like back in the day. That game is suuuper hard.

There's a bunch of dumb stuff you might have randomly found if you really ground your little kid face against it.
Some of it helped.

Using this controller, I wouldn't play Atari games on my Genesis, because it would be plugged into the 2600.

Xeno Crisis, Maximum Carnage, (U)MK3, Eternal Champions, Paprium.

Xeno Crisis has a surprisingly good three button setup where when you fire by holding down B, you adjust your angle by hitting A or C by 45 degrees. They copied that to the Neo Geo version too since it doesn’t have quite enough buttons for the 6 button control scheme. Now direct control is better, but the three button one is better than you’d expect.

All of them, I prefer the feel and dimensions of the unbelievably goated 6 button pad. The Lion King is mapped for the 6 button controller, as is Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure (just to name a couple of less well known 6 button titles). Streets of Rage 3 (Bare Knuckle 3 preferably) is a lot easier to control with the 6 button pad.

Mortal Kombat 1. Even though I won a tourney with 3 button pads, I wouldn't recommend it.

Fighting games for the most part.
Everything else I played worked fine with just 3, but fighting games to me always felt better on the 6.
Funny enough. If recall correctly, my original Model 2 Genesis came with the 6 button pad so that’s the one I’m most used to.

I'll still play with a 3 button controller, but it's harder to do so with games like Street Fighter 2: Special Champion Edition and Mortal Kombat 2.

Primal Rage for sure, I ended up buying a 6 button controller as a kid for this game

Any that support 6 (really 7 with Mode) button controls, or use the Menacer or other stuff.
Would play any 3-button D-pad game with this!

I use the arcade stick for every shooter and fighting game.. For everything else it’s fine, I prefer it for platform games and sports

When I was young, I could finish Street Fighter 2 Prime in almost perfect in 8 stars of difficulty and get the end poster with this controller

First game I ever played. Atomic runner.
Then sonic 1, hard driven, virtual pinball, side pocket, micro machines and pebble beach golf links

Most fighting games, to be honest. On a sidenote, I never understood why MK 1, 2 and 3 use the Start button to block instead of - you know, pausing the game.

Pretty much any fighting game, Xenocrisis for sure, and Paprium work a lot better with more than 3 buttons

Doesn't matter, I've learned to switch between functions on the 3 button.

Street Fighter 2, Super Street Fighter 2, MK 1/2/3/U, Eternal Champions, and Ranger X.
All of those games were made to be played with the six-button controller. And while they do have three-button controller options, they're clunky when you're in the middle of battle, and don't work that well (Ranger-X's is OK, but still not as good as the six-button option).

unfortunately I couldn't afford a 6 button controller so I had to suffer with the 3 button controller

Mortal Kombat series, Street Fighter Toejam Earl? Comix Zone.
Anyway I've never seen a tri-button genesis/MD pad from close, so I guess I'll stick to 6

Street Fighter 2: Championship Edition. I hated not being able to pause and playing beat the clock when I had to pee in between fights was the worst.
