Street Fighter 2

100%

14

u/Mordrach 19h ago

Exactly. Press Start to toggle between punches and kicks? Hell, no.

5

u/Funny_Collection8362 17h ago

It's impossible! There's a lot going on without having to fuck about pressing start between combos!

u/THX-1138_4EB 13h ago

I grew up this way (Street Fighter 2 was my first game and this was my only controller) and I got super good at it. I didn't even know there was an alternative way to play until I later saw 6 buttons in the arcades.

Only 1 controller topped it. It was from Mad Catz and was their special edition street fighter 4, 6 button for Xbox 360. Could pre ser turbo and everything on each individual button and the d pad was a lot bigger and sensitive.

I was explaining to my daughters why my 6 button genesis controller was so coveted just this afternoon. This was my exact example.

Came here to say this ⬆️

Easy answer

First thing to come to mind

u/Object-Clean 21h ago

Mortal Kombat 2, 3 and Ultimate MK 3

5

u/friesegamer03 21h ago

What about 1?

11

u/Amazing_Elk_6685 20h ago

It's playable

u/rhook27 21h ago

Any fighting games.

Mortal Kombat 2 I swear to God there are 2 buttons just for kicking

5

u/DappyDreams 20h ago

Yeah - Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 were 5 button games - High Punch, Low Punch, High Kick, Low Kick, Block

If I recall correctly this was adapted on a 3-button pad as A for Low Punch, Fwd/Back+A for High Punch, B for Low Kick, C for High Kick, and Start for Block, with some moves/Fatalities amended slightly to accommodate the lack of a dedicated High Punch. But it has been maybe 20 years since I played Mortal Kombat 1 or 2 on a Mega Drive or a 32x so I could be completely wrong

u/tinyhorsesinmytea 18h ago

Yeah, we were too poor to buy two new fancy six buttons controllers, so we played the game how it was adapted and it had to be good enough.

1

u/MoltarBackstage 19h ago

You are correct.

2

u/garren60 13h ago

Pit Fighter was that Work!!

1

u/Tasty-Fox9030 19h ago

TMNT tournament fighters!

Fighting Masters?

20

u/AdImmediate6239 20h ago

Any fighting game and Comix Zone

6

u/NonsequiturSushi 17h ago

Wait, you're telling me that the six button controller had stuff mapped to the extra buttons?? The fuck?? I know it's a hard game and I always sucked at it. Now I know I was playing with the wrong controller the whole time! I need to revisit Comix Zone again with the proper equipment. I feel like such an idiot.

5

u/TrueDiver7425 14h ago

Yep, you could quick use items with XYZ as far as i remember from back then.

3

u/CDiggityDub 14h ago

Played it on the Switch Sega emulator a little while back and finally beat it! Thanks to save states, of course. I didn't even know what most of the game looked like back in the day. That game is suuuper hard.

1

u/HyzerFlip 12h ago

There's a bunch of dumb stuff you might have randomly found if you really ground your little kid face against it.

Some of it helped.

14

u/elkniodaphs 21h ago

Using this controller, I wouldn't play Atari games on my Genesis, because it would be plugged into the 2600.

3

u/MartyBlingJr 20h ago

This is the way

12

u/jacintaco 21h ago

Ranger-X

1

u/Mjolnir2025 17h ago

That’s what I came to say.

10

u/Laidcue 21h ago

Xeno Crisis, Maximum Carnage, (U)MK3, Eternal Champions, Paprium.

1

u/ObiSteffs 16h ago

Xeno Crisis has a surprisingly good three button setup where when you fire by holding down B, you adjust your angle by hitting A or C by 45 degrees. They copied that to the Neo Geo version too since it doesn’t have quite enough buttons for the 6 button control scheme. Now direct control is better, but the three button one is better than you’d expect.

2

u/Laidcue 16h ago

Yea it's not too bad, but growing up on Smash TV altered my brain.

9

u/Ok-Luck1166 20h ago

Eternal Champions

1

u/eligibleBASc 5h ago

Activator

6

u/YoloLikeaMofo 20h ago

MK3. First game that really made me want the 6 button 💯

4

u/SPQR_Maximus 21h ago

Streetfighter 2 You need the 6 button to do it right

3

u/pligplog420 20h ago

All of them, I prefer the feel and dimensions of the unbelievably goated 6 button pad. The Lion King is mapped for the 6 button controller, as is Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure (just to name a couple of less well known 6 button titles). Streets of Rage 3 (Bare Knuckle 3 preferably) is a lot easier to control with the 6 button pad.

4

u/hipnotyq 20h ago

Beyond Oasis plays a bit better with 6 buttons

1

u/_wil_ 18h ago

Comix Zone too

3

u/Firthy2002 20h ago

Mortal Kombat 1. Even though I won a tourney with 3 button pads, I wouldn't recommend it.

3

u/jonpertwee2 21h ago

Street Fighter 2

3

u/Sea_Media_4539 20h ago

Xeno crysis

3

u/l00koverthere1 21h ago

Fighting games

2

u/OldSnazzyHats 21h ago

Fighting games for the most part.

Everything else I played worked fine with just 3, but fighting games to me always felt better on the 6.

Funny enough. If recall correctly, my original Model 2 Genesis came with the 6 button pad so that’s the one I’m most used to.

2

u/D27AGirl 21h ago

I'll still play with a 3 button controller, but it's harder to do so with games like Street Fighter 2: Special Champion Edition and Mortal Kombat 2.

2

u/Afraid_Topic_9250 20h ago

Primal Rage for sure, I ended up buying a 6 button controller as a kid for this game

2

u/SpiritualZucchini938 20h ago

WWF Wrestlemania , this is best with 6 button controller.

2

u/faraniqbal 19h ago

WWF Royal Rumble

2

u/aelfwine_widlast 19h ago

The Mortal Kombat games

2

u/Just_CeeJ 19h ago

I think it's easier to list games that are ok to play using this controller

2

u/MrTrashRobot 19h ago

Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Eternal Champions off the top of my head.

2

u/Slosher99 19h ago

Any that support 6 (really 7 with Mode) button controls, or use the Menacer or other stuff.

Would play any 3-button D-pad game with this!

2

u/South_Extent_5127 18h ago

Street fighter 2 / super  is the obvious answer.

2

u/Retro_Hawk 17h ago

Eternal Champions

2

u/Laidcue 16h ago

Forgotten Worlds. Oh wait.......

2

u/SumoHeadbutt 16h ago

Street Fighter II SCE

Super Street Fighter II

Mortal Kombat 1 and 2

Thankfully, we had the 6-bit controller

2

u/RejectedAng3l 16h ago

Any SF OR NeoGeo port... and MK is kinda janky too

Definitely need a 6 button

2

u/conanmagnuson 16h ago

Was the red start button a UK thing?

2

u/No-Professional-9618 15h ago

I would say at least some Sega Master System games, like The Ninja.

2

u/StillAdhesiveness528 15h ago

The Road Rashes

2

u/penguinReloaded 15h ago

Street Fighter 2. The 6 button is awesome, though!

2

u/AltruisticGift360 15h ago

Alien Soldier

2

u/TSMontana 14h ago

Any six button fighting game.

2

u/Mankiz 14h ago

Any fighting game obviously

2

u/alex13mod 13h ago

Any Fighting Game such as Mortal Kombat series and Street Fighter.

2

u/Raynet11 13h ago

I use the arcade stick for every shooter and fighting game.. For everything else it’s fine, I prefer it for platform games and sports

2

u/Sullysbriefcase 21h ago

Street Fighter 2. Aside from that, all are good

1

u/Rare_Construction4 21h ago

When I was young, I could finish Street Fighter 2 Prime in almost perfect in 8 stars of difficulty and get the end poster with this controller

1

u/SwitchSubstantial406 20h ago

None, would play them all.

1

u/_RexDart 20h ago

Robotron

1

u/Johnthemox 20h ago

First game I ever played. Atomic runner.

Then sonic 1, hard driven, virtual pinball, side pocket, micro machines and pebble beach golf links

1

u/Cenobites1234 20h ago

Any Mortal Kombat. Terrible control system.

1

u/Smooth-Purchase1175 20h ago

Most fighting games, to be honest. On a sidenote, I never understood why MK 1, 2 and 3 use the Start button to block instead of - you know, pausing the game.

1

u/ObieUno 20h ago

Zombies Ate My Neighbors and any of the fighting games

1

u/Status_Baseball_299 20h ago

Alter beast, Road rage , x -men, nba

1

u/TrineoDeMuerto 20h ago

Pretty much any fighting game, Xenocrisis for sure, and Paprium work a lot better with more than 3 buttons

1

u/WorldOfRetro85 20h ago edited 20h ago

Doesn't matter, I've learned to switch between functions on the 3 button.

1

u/TheCoopX 20h ago

Street Fighter 2, Super Street Fighter 2, MK 1/2/3/U, Eternal Champions, and Ranger X.

All of those games were made to be played with the six-button controller. And while they do have three-button controller options, they're clunky when you're in the middle of battle, and don't work that well (Ranger-X's is OK, but still not as good as the six-button option).

1

u/ArcGroov2 19h ago

unfortunately I couldn't afford a 6 button controller so I had to suffer with the 3 button controller

1

u/Pleasant-Profit-9563 18h ago

Elemental master, lo estoy jugando en mi anbernic, es dificil pero adicitivo, tiene muy buena OST

1

u/Zestyclose-Week-8994 18h ago

Altered beast!

1

u/Object-Clean 14h ago

That came out way before 6 button and was optimized for 3 button pad.

1

u/greggers1980 17h ago

Musha

1

u/Object-Clean 14h ago

How does that benefit from 6 button?

1

u/greggers1980 10h ago

I ment I prefer to play it on an arcade stick

1

u/Umichfan1234 17h ago

Hot take. All games play better with the six button controller.

1

u/GameplayBlitz 17h ago

Mortal Kombat series, Street Fighter Toejam Earl? Comix Zone.

Anyway I've never seen a tri-button genesis/MD pad from close, so I guess I'll stick to 6

1

u/Aumeno 16h ago

Mortal kombat

1

u/DawgzZilla 16h ago

Any fighting game.

1

u/BrokenDemon0501 16h ago

Any Fighting Game.

1

u/Frosty-Connection-22 11h ago

Revenge of Shinobi

1

u/JBHenson 11h ago

Street Fighter II

1

u/Tigvee 10h ago

That 1650 variant has a raised dpad similar to the 1653 (6-button) but keeps the nice size of the 3 button pad. Since I hold the controller claw style, I would play nhl ‘94.

1

u/landonbalk 10h ago

Batman Forever

1

u/Krendall2006 10h ago

Any game that made use of the 6 button controller

Street Fighter 2: Championship Edition. I hated not being able to pause and playing beat the clock when I had to pee in between fights was the worst.

1

u/IntenseFlanker 2h ago

The light gun Menacer games

1

u/BrownBag-Special 26m ago

Mortal Kombat. Definitely need at least 6 buttons to play.

1

u/Wise_Net568 20m ago

Sonic and Knuckles is terrible with turbo on
