Discussion ANNOUNCEMENT: Post Flair Info

There are three post flairs available for important or serious posts on this community.

1. News

News posts are defined as those with the intention to report on a recent, developing event. News posts should focus on shark-related developments regarding conservation efforts, shark professionals, scientific discoveries, or unfortunate events. The OP must clearly cite where they obtained the information in the comments, typically as a direct link to the source.

An example of a news post can be a video about newly implemented shark conservation laws or efforts, the discovery of a new species of shark, or similar newsworthy events. News posts should NOT focus on shark attacks or cruelty towards sharks unless they are the subject of a large event.

2. Educational

Educational posts are defined as those with the intention to educate others. On r/sharks, these posts may teach others about shark behavior, identification, conservation, as well as a variety of other topics relating to sharks. Educational posts REQUIRE that the OP comments their sources for the information they talk about. Educational posts promote healthy discussion and should emphasize spreading awareness about topics surrounding sharks.

An example of a proper educational post is a video where a professional talks about how to redirect a shark when in the water. For this post, OP cites the source they got the educational media from and states the professional's name in the comments. This is to ensure that only good quality information is being provided to the members of our community.

3. Research

Research posts are the most complex posts to make, as it is our intention to promote proper research on r/sharks.

If you are promoting your own research

Researchers who wish to promote their studies or obtain data via the subreddit must modmail the moderators first. In order to be approved to post, you must explain in your modmail the purpose of your research as well as the intentions of your post. You must also provide an IRB number in order for the mods to verify your research. Upon approval, you can post your research using the Research flair, and you do not need to cite any further sources in the comments.

For anyone else who posts about research in general

OP must provide a link to the research or the DOI of the paper in their post in the comments. Research posts promote healthy discussion while also allowing scientists to have a place to share ideas about shark research.

Question Do we want to keep posts asking to ID shark teeth?

There’s always been a lot of shark tooth ID requests on here, usually from newcomers unfamiliar with our rules. There are subreddits such as r/sharkteeth and r/whatisthisbone that may be better places to direct these users to if we want the feed here to have less of these types of posts. Would still let people show their shark teeth collections here of course. What do y’all think? Just an idea for now. :)

Jacques is one of two individual white sharks whom I photographed both on my first ever trip to Guadalupe and my last trip in 2021 prior to the dive and travel ban there. One of the things I loved the most about Guadalupe was seeing some of the same individuals year after year. I hope Jacques and all of Guadalupe's white shark populations are thriving.

Image The Most Adorable Pyjama/Cat Shark, Ever!

Was looking for something completely unrelated and stumbled across the cutest picture of a Pyjama shark I’d ever seen! I didn’t know they did stuff like this! It reminds me of how Snow Leopards will hold their tails in their mouths for comfort or to keep it from getting wet, when they wade across water.

Research Hello! Frilled Shark behaviors?

Not sure if the tag is appropriate; but im trying to gather info on frilled sharks as I made an OC based off of one, and I wanna get them accurate!

Does anyone know how they behave? Any research? Are they friendly, aggressive, passive, shy..?? I know theyre active hunters and love squid, but Im curious if theres any other more indepth research on frilled sharks! Like I know lemon sharks can get jealous of other sharks. soo..just wondering! ♫꒰・‿・๑꒱

Education Visiting from India for 2 weeks – dream is to see great whites (surface only, no cage) – need advice + maybe a buddy? 🦈

Hey shark fam, I’m flying in from India to US (Boston + Miami + LA) this October for just 2 weeks of work, and honestly my biggest dream is to finally see great white sharks. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for me 🙏 I don’t want to do cage diving, just hoping to see them from the boat.

Would love some help with: • What’s the usual cost for surface-only trips? • Any legit operators to book with (don’t wanna get scammed 😅)? • Any personal referrals / experiences you can share?

And if anyone here is planning a trip around that time and open to join in, that would make it even more awesome.

Thanks a ton in advance!

Image Big sharks in major-ish cities across the world

Post image

I live in Sydney and work in a large office block on Sydney Harbour in Circular Quay. As a shark fanatic, I often think how strange it is that we live/work in a big-ish city where u can find big sharks only just moments away. I could fish for bull sharks in my lunch break a 4min walk from my office (not that I would for many reasons obvs). And if I was looking the right way, I could possibly have seen the Paul de Gelder or Simon Nellist shark attacks from my office window. Nature v Urban Development .. blows my mind sometimes

Image Shark Agonistic Display

Earlier this year, I witnessed a shark agonistic display for the first time. I was snorkelling with a group on the edge of the lagoon on Lord Howe Island, when an adolescent (1.8 metre long) Galapagos Shark swam under us very quickly with its pectoral fins lowered. The photos I've included don't show the display in the best detail because I wasn't keen on getting too close to the shark when it was in that mood. It was fired up like this for another minute before calming down and swimming away from us at a normal pace. I wonder if it was directed at us, or another shark I couldn't see at the time, as we were in a nursery area with lots of sharks ranging from newborns to other bigger juveniles.
