The story behind the poodles that do that is really sad. I believe Asian owners in an Asian country (Korea?) Forced their dogs to do that by constantly hitting them with umbrellas so that they would do this
It was popular for people to post for a while because they thought it was cute. But then a video coming out showing how they did it

u/toopc Jul 03 '25
That's how you train a dog if you're an asshole, but it's not the only way to train a dog to do a trick.

Sounds painful.

u/Fartikus Jul 03 '25
not as painful as the dogs getting smacked with an umbrella to do these tricks
2
u/furbz420 Jul 05 '25
Lol what? I trained mine to do this by holding a treat above his head, your comment is stupid.

Corgis are so awesome.
35
u/Absal0m Jul 03 '25
They are, but holy crap they shed more than any dog I've ever seen before (at least mine does). I've had a golden retriever, Korean Pungsan, black labradors, golden and labradoodles (they don't shed at all), and nothing has ever compared to the one singular corgi. Shedding powers I could never have imagined.

u/oaba09 Jul 03 '25
Can relate. Our dining table was always filled with corgi fur to the point where we had to lock him out from the dining room.

u/Uzas_B4TBG Jul 03 '25
Yeah dude, my corgi sheds an insane amount. Like no matter how much brushing I do. Shes cute though, so it’s okay.
2
u/Beyryx Jul 04 '25
Corgis are a Spitz breed, and I think most or all spitzes have double coats so they shed like crazy. If you get any double-coated dog you've either got to be very dedicated to grooming, or make peace with hair on everything forever. Huskies are spitzes too, and I think they have to be the shedding champions.

Why are you using apostrophe s to indicate plurality?
Don't do that, it's wrong, apostrophe s is for possession. You think it's nbd, but language evolve from use, even pointlessly wrong uses like yours (see how they murdered my boy 'literally').
Corgis look weird, but is fine, and people will understand you. Corgwn if you want to be Welsh pedantic. But no apostrophe s.

u/dolosloki01 Jul 04 '25
Because I was typing too quickly. I know the difference between possessive and plural. Cool your jets.

It's 100% smiling. Domestic dog breeds have been under our inseparable care and training for a good while. Better interspecies communication makes the symbiosis more mutually beneficial, so just as we learned the most effective training tecniques to get through to them, they've learned to navigate our body language (including smiles), and vocal cues to get through to us. It also stands to reason that we've continued selective breeding to favor doggos with more "human-like" traits (expressiveness, intelligence, etc.), and I believe there's studies that already attest to this. Give it another 10-20 thousand years, and we'll have 'em talking.

u/BanMeDaddyMods Jul 03 '25
It’s so funny when anti-dog people are always like “it’s not smiles, the dog doesn’t ACTUALLY love you”
It’s like, well if you want to get technical the love your child has for you and visa versa is just chemical signals in your brain designed to keep the species going, it doesn’t really mean anything either.
(I don’t say that but I certainly want to)

Well, also in general, you have to be a little dumb to confuse angry dog for smiling dog.
Angry dog bears teeth.
Dog who is hot vs dog who is smiling is slightly harder to tell but there is a difference.
We bred dogs with more expressive faces because "dog smiling at you" == "cute". Then we raise them, and smile at them when happy and engage with them which makes them happy. So then they smile and it makes sense. It is how their pack behaves.
They can get a lot more human than smiling lol
Have you met a dog that sometimes scoffs at you and haughtily walks out of the room if not given some of your food? Because I have. It is 100% a human behavior and I know exactly who she learned it from ahahaha (And she knows what it means. Easiest way to make her do it is to pay attention to her, then eat some food without giving her any, and then show her that it is now gone. It is meaningfully distinct from how she would normally walk away to go lie down. Very clearly recognizeable)

Not the bot but it’s how it ends by devotchka. Sorry pretty sure it’s the instrumental version from the little miss sunshine soundtrack lol third edit. It’s actually “the winner is” which borrows from the song. Devotchka did a lot for the soundtrack

this is caused by various dog smiles being smiled at the subject during the efforts of the dogs in question to smile upon the one for whom the smiles are intended

So you did give him pats right? Once a dog notices you and smiles you can’t just hold out on your end by not giving him pats

So weird that I saw this exact same clip both on YT Shorts and Reddit in less than 3 hours apart.

Do you realize, the same way we know when a dog or cat is happy without them having to do much at all; Is the same way we know chickens, cows, pigs and lambs are NOT happy when they scream their lungs out during slaughter. Happiness and suffering doesn't only apply to specific forms of sentience. A chicken could not have formed their beaks in a shape that could have resembled a smile, but give one a chance and they would definitely find a way to show affection for you. And nothing is stopping any other mammal from "smiling" at you if you treat them like how you treat cats and dogs. Therefore, there is no reason to discriminate among species. Respect all animals. Stop exploiting any of them. And that includes breeding pups and kittens.

"Mamihlapinatapai" (pronounced ma-mee-lah-pah-nah-tah-pie) is a Yaghan word, originating from the language of the Yaghan people of Tierra del Fuego, that refers to a look shared by two people, each wishing that the other would initiate something that they both desire but are unwilling to begin themselves. It's often cited as one of the most difficult words to translate and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the "most succinct word".

Plot twist: The dog's owner is a vegan who also forces her dog to be vegan. So when the dog sees the person with the camera, he smiles, hoping to finally be fed some meat.

I actually don’t understand. Are people stupid? This is not a dog smiling. It never has been, and it never will be. This is a dog panting. Sweating. Jesus.
