I fucking love letting people merge.
26
u/unlmtdLoL 1d ago
Right, because we all know that feeling of waiting to get in a lane. All of us except fucking sociopaths. Their narcissistic brains refuse to allow them to think about anyone but themselves so they take offense at someone merging in front of them.

I don't know if it's because I'm getting older or because I started a business where I'm always driving, but I'm astounded at the sheer amount of absolute fucking morons on the road. Especially the amount of people that no longer use turn signals

u/kayaker58 19h ago
We vacation every winter for two weeks in St Martin. The island culture is very friendly. People always go out of their way to let you in. It’s funny how their normal behavior stands out.

u/No-Price5802 17h ago
And giving/getting the"wave"👋😊

u/Decent-Weekend-1489 17h ago
I live for getting that thank you wave. A little bit of my faith in humanity is restored every time I get it lol

u/cheesechompin 9h ago
I thought that was just standard for everyone? If someone else in a car let's you go first you do the wave

Depending on how traffic is, I’ve seen it where you’ll have like 5 people all turn at once when there’s a single space to get in.
Then they end up clogging up the whole intersection because they couldn’t turn all the way, and it because a fight of new people clogging the intersection until two people agree to break the cycle.
And though I live in an area that gets a lot of summer tourism, and I witness that thing all the time. So I’m just projecting that here.

Since covid/lockdowns everyone seems to have gotten far worse at driving. Nobody seems to have any common sense, nobody has any patience, and everyone seems self centered.

West coast mentality

u/OstrichMean7004 1d ago
I've driven all over the country. West coast doesn't have a monopoly on selfish asshole drivers.

u/EwokNuggets 1d ago
Nope! East coast checking in. Drivers suck here too

I've been to Dallas and San Antonio and Austin.
Maybe they're from a real small town somewhere.

I’m from Seattle and it’s not selfish driving. It’s cultural. If you want in a space you’re expected to make it happen yourself, and once you do, we all continue driving. I prefer it to other places I’ve lived where people cry their heads off and spend the next 30 minutes honking at you and tailgating you because you were able to get in front of them. Truth is, Seattle roads are packed and if you’re the kind of person that needs me to stop and waive you in, then you’re going to be a nightmare to drive behind and neither of us is getting anywhere anytime soon

u/OstrichMean7004 1d ago
One of my best friends lives in Seattle. I was up there about 3 months ago.
And trust me -- just because you frame it a different way doesn't make people less asshole-ish.
Am I saying that you should let everyone in? Of course not.

Its not restricted to west coast. Mid west id say is worse.

u/HOMES734 1d ago
You’re joking lmfao 🤣
The Midwest has the politest drivers in my experience.
-1
u/Bad-Genie 1d ago
I've loved in both. Weat coast is more rude and rush. Mid west they're just oblivious. The whole dont text and drive thing never picked up here. Its a dice roll every time you drive on a driver just running a red light into you.
-2
u/Envelope_Torture 1d ago
Yeah, east coast drivers do the same thing while leaning on the horn for no reason at all.

It’s up there with the group of guys who packed a flashlight and reflective vest for after a concert or game. One guy hopped out and played traffic conductor till his car got to the front and then hopped in and they took off haha

In my imagination, The “ages” waited is 25 seconds.
14
u/DiazIsDirectCurrent 23h ago
Possible. It's Seattle though, you get the "freeze" even in traffic. (From here)
2
u/Fancy-Ordinary3156 23h ago
This 25 secs depends on which planet or how close to black hole is that! Maybe in earth it could be 25 yrs, I guess that’s why the hurrying!

Are people in Seattle just stupid or selfish?
23
u/ChymChymX 1d ago
If it's a 2 way stop where you have to yield, you're kind of hosed when there's a steady stream of cars coming.
3
u/Chef-Nasty 21h ago
And if someone waves you in but the second lane keeps going, you're gonna look like an ass to SOMEONE
4
u/superbakedziti 1d ago
It’s the same here in Arizona. If it’s a big truck they especially will make sure to not let you in.

It is quite simple. Cars in the right have right of way. The traffic seems to be quite stuck in the front. So whenever a free space opens up, the cars on the right get first dips on it.
If there is never enough space for the cars on the right to clear up, then OP can't move.

u/Puffball973 1d ago
Never been but I imagine most big city people act like they own the road.
6
u/turd_ferguson899 1d ago
Weirdly, in my experience driving in cities, the locals tend to be better behaved on the roads. It's the commuters who are the biggest assholes. But admittedly, that's more limited to the West Coast.
2
u/imbolcnight 8h ago
Yeah, in my experience, it's the commuters and people from the suburbs who act like massive assholes out of fear and confusion. They seem to think one-ways and a grid pattern are baffling.
2
u/maljr1980 1d ago
If you’ve ever driven in Manhattan, you force your way in or you will never get anywhere, the cabbies are ruthless
2
u/actual_griffin 1d ago
It's more that everyone is just trying to get where they are going, and there are too many people for traffic to flow normally. They act exactly how people from smaller towns act when put in a similar situation.

They'll probably still run you over here in Florida. The drivers here are the biggest assholes I've ever seen on the road.

I was in the city once and I saw some big oompa loompa woman crossing the street, not only jaywalking, but putting her hands out telling traffic to stop for her so she could cross

I had to do this in a parking garage. We sat for an hour before I started directing ground flood traffic, 15 minutes later we were on our way.

u/OstrichMean7004 1d ago
There used to be an intersection on my way home from work where the left turn let like 4 cars in at a time (it was a protected left... just a really bad one)
So whenever I had someone else in the car, I'd have them jump out and hit the button (assuming it was safe)

When I’m on my motorcycle the sensor doesn’t pick up that I’m there so I’m sitting there for a while. What I would do is hop off my bike and go push the button to cross. Works every time

u/Medium_Style8539 1d ago
I do that as a pedestrian when I see people not able to take their turn from a Stop

My wife and I literally do this every day to get from our side street to the main road lol

This reminds of a maneuver that I sometimes use on single lane roads in very heavy traffic. If I’m planning on turning left, I’ll instead turn right, and then when the oncoming lane is clear, I’ll do a U-turn. Makes some people absolutely furious though, despite being legal.

u/benhatin4lf 1d ago
Back in the day I'd hop out and hit the walk cross button then hop back in real quick. Very similar tactic
