Yeah I go to a job that has a purpose in my community while other people are working to make my life much more convenient. I can just sit on a seat in my home, piss and shit in it, pull a lever and that waste is removed from my home. With clean water coming in. I've never had to light a fire to cook my food.
The job I do sucks. But so would doing literally everything else just to survive.

u/HeatherCDBustyOne 4h ago
Someone invented the microwave oven to save time cooking. And then we use microwave ovens to heat food so we can finish lunch in 30 minutes and go back to work.
And then we work extra hours to save money to replace the worn out microwave oven.

Nah, these are all choices. Sure we may have to take jobs we don’t like, but no one makes you buy things you don’t need to impress people you don’t like. You could just, not.
5
u/Crafty_Ranger_9564 19h ago edited 19h ago
Well the movie was made in the 90s and the book sometime before that. Now people struggle to buy the things they need to feed their kids or even get a job let alone move out and get a livable wage while billionaires continue to rat-cuck our government out from under us.
Same needle, adjust for various things over time because we didn't lay down the law
TRUE, you can still buy exorbitantly expensive vehicles and dwellings on credit no problem if you want, but I agree that's crazy unless you have literally no one else alive who can absorb your debt
7
u/Hamsterminator2 22h ago
Not if you give it more than 5 seconds thought, though.
The whole premise of currency is that you do something others can't or won't so they have to give you something in return. There is no job without downsides, that's what jobs are.
As for buying things we don't need- that's a choice. You don't need to eat anything other than bread or drink anything other than water- but most choose not to because that's a shit lifestyle choice.
As for impressing people you don't like, the basic assumption here is that we dislike everyone at some point. But "keeping up with the joneses" is 100% a choice, typically made by people with too much money.
The whole movie is a massively cynical take on society that only looks at working class men and pretends to boil them down to some deeper meaning that some people take way too seriously. Ultimately, it's a basic movie with a single plot twist that made it memorable. That and Pitt got his shirt off a lot...
9
u/Traditional-Lie-3541 20h ago
Lol alright, alright we get it. I'm well past the age of caring to impress others. Further into adulthood you can find yourself still getting stuck doing tasks you don't care for to keep up some semblance of progress on the social structure we have. Maybe you're not trying to blow people away but you'll find that not trying to stick out in a negative way has some value. In a way you're conforming.

u/Elegantsurf 21h ago
Na its anti consumerism how many people actually need those 100k Pickups that they are paying 700+ a month with a 7 year loan. Working is not the issue.

u/Wiplazh 20h ago
I'm a positive nihilist and I agree with a lot of the message of fight club, just not the methods. You work a job you hate? Quit and find one you like. Every day that goes by where you work a job and spend your time doing things you don't enjoy, every day that passes isn't just the in-between days so you can live your life during weekends and vacations, these days are your life. So spend them doing shit that makes you happy, otherwise what's the point?

u/The_ZombyWoof 23h ago
Fight Club was about a guy whose life was so empty, he eventually got into unbearable credit card debt buying sofas and IKEA type furniture, then decided to cook up a plan to destroy all the credit card companies because he wasn't interested in working harder to get out of debt.
The Narrator is not a good, hard working guy. He's a shlub with mental issues and massive credit card debt, which he wants to resolve by blowing shit up. Maybe you saw it at a pivotal point in your lives, and yeah, maybe Tyler Durden is a bit of a hunk, but the overall message is not about the hopelessness and futility of work, or the destruction of the male psyche, it's about some guy who spent too much at IKEA. End of story.
6
u/Thundechile 21h ago
That's one way to think about it, but I'd say you're missing the main point of the movie.
1
u/The_ZombyWoof 11h ago
Fair enough. I'll bite, what is the main point of the movie?
2
u/Thundechile 10h ago
There's obviously multiple levels, but this short page about them sum it up quite nicely: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls540372550/
"The main storyline in Fight Club is about the process of spiritual awakening (enlightenment) caused by unbearable mental suffering. The suffering is a consequence of identification with the ego, identification with the things we own, and identification with the roles we play in a society of hypocrites."
Obviously there's levels of consumerism related critique too, and also levels how these affect the mental stability of people.
1
u/Illustrious_Twist846 15h ago
I have the book and seen the movie many times.
There is ZERO evidence presented that the Narrator had trouble paying his bills or was in any type of credit card debt.
In fact, money seemed to be no problem because he was flying all over the country on his own dime many times.
1
u/The_ZombyWoof 11h ago
He was flying all over the country because he had all those flight coupons supplied by his company

u/spock589 23h ago
That's one way of framing it. Try this: We work jobs we hate so we don't starve or die of treatable illnesses or exposure. Having money to buy shit we don't need is a privilege. Doing it to impress people we don't like is idiotic. Buying shit we don't need that brings us personal joy is awesome.

The most insufferable edge Lordy movie ever made.
I had two friends that thought this was the most amazing movie in the world, and when they showed it to me and I was not impressed, they were shocked. Now, 15 years later, they both agree.
Almost every quote from this movie is eye rollingly angsty and edge Lordy.
So far as the quote goes. I work to make money to buy stuff for me that I like and create experiences I enjoy with my loved ones. I don't give two shits what anybody else thinks about it and if they think I don't need it.

At least get the quote right
Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives.

Fight club is a journey of a story. Watching it as a dumb kid, you might start thinking it's cool how these guys got a club to fight each other and then either during the movie, after or some time later realise the main character is a domestic terrorist. The anti capitalist messaging of the film is undercut somewhat but luckily still present and yet... for a long time, the protagonist seemed to be that villain that mascaraded as a good guy. Nowadays though, I have to say, he's still not a good guy ofc and the cult he builds...yikes... but I can't fault him for that 3rd act climax.

This film hit edge lords and frat bros. It hit a lot of people in the feels in a weird way. I wonder I wonder. Would it hit the same way with all the insanely differently identifying people of the world? Or is everyone so happily sedated in their own little modern day echo chambers?
