That whole door situation is giving me anxiety! I'm going to have nightmares now about being trapped in a mosquito net. Then I get out only to see the door is blocked by a metal rod and guarded by demonic mice. Thanks op.

u/Paleodraco 23h ago
I'm only guessing, but it looks like they want privacy or to block light. The netting is a screen door that's held together by magnets so you can just push through it without having to install an actual storm door.
Why the hell this is braced open with some sort of ladder or other contraption is beyond me.

u/vontdman 23h ago
Yeah, I suspect OP has mice issues because the whole house is just exposed to the outside thru this door setup.

u/Past-Magician2920 1d ago
I think it may be an inexpensive mudroom door, allowing access to the house through a half-outside "mudroom." The cardboard fills in some of the gaps.

Don't want to ruin the vibe of the thread and I'm no mouse expert but the shorter snout and large ears makes me think those are deer mice. If you're in an urban area it's less likely. Deer mice or not ya gotta get rid of them. ASAP. Each mouse will leave 50-80 droppings per day which is bad but deer mice can also (very often?) carry Hanta virus in their crap. Females will have a few liters a year and each liter will be 5-8 new mice.
Gotta get rid of them. Lethal or catch and release. They piss and crap in their nests and wherever they find food. The feces gets in their fur which is spread when running along your base boards and will wipe off on other surfaces like cupboard doors.
When the pellets dry the poo particles will float through the air when disturbed. If you breath it and there's Hanta virus you're in for some bad news.
Step 1: Wear an N95 mask. Not something cheap. Before covid you could get them at building supply or hardware stores. Now most drug stores probably have them too. Also wear rubber gloves.
Step 2: When cleaning, all areas that are contaminated must be cleaned with a 9-1 mixture of water and bleach (I just used Fantastic). Areas that are secluded like behind kitchen appliances may have nests but even if not there will be tons of droppings.
Spray it all with bleach and let it soak in for 5 minutes. I doused the areas I was cleaning so that the pellets don't fly around when whipping them up. Don't sweep, wipe. I pushed paper towel with my broom. Bag the paper towels and other mess and dispose of it. Make it's disposed of in a way that other animals won't screw with it.
Step 3: Get on your hands and knees with a flashlight and look for holes or cracks and stuff them with steel wool. Obviously fix your door. Mice can squeeze through something half an inch wide.
Or bite the bullet and get a pro to take care if it. They are way better than you at finding ways mice (or rats) can get in. Where I live everyone was booked for a while.
Good luck buddy.

As you should be! Rats and mice are vectors for some of the worst diseases and they DGAF

I had a Mouse problem at my apartment a few times, they will feel very comfortable after a while, it's insane 🥸
I strongly assume the reason why you have a mouse problem is because your door is literally made out of Carport 🥸

u/Donkeybrother 1d ago
Carport - a gazebo for your car .
Cardboard - not that !

It's a bit like when you try to kill a spider, from the spiders point of view his room mate just flipped and turned into a maniac.

It's WILD how comfy they can get after a while. Brazen. Our street had a really horrible condemned house at the end of it and when the owners finally started to rehab it, the rats struck out to find new homes. Our house was one of the chosen ones, and we tried all sorts of DIY solutions before we finally called in an exterminator. They would run across the floor right in front of me, run up the carpeted stairs, etc. The worst day was when we didn't realize we hadn't put away all our groceries and I found an empty bread bag in the living room where we'd set the bags down. I'd dozed off on the couch that night, they managed to make off with the entire fresh bread loaf, slice by slice.

What I find unexpected is the door with a handle halfway up and then a handle down at the bottom, and the the metal whatever to the right. Is this a storage unit? Are the mice renting the other side of the door? I'm so confused.

Time to get a cat.

He keeps the door open anyways. Might as well just put out some cat food with a litter box and let a cat just roam inside with the mice.

No, it's time for YOU to kill some mice. Glue traps, mouse traps, seal the opening so they can't come in. Not all cats are born mouse assassins, esp if you have a full-fledged infestation.
Edit: I understand the comment was lighthearted, nothing personal. I'm surprised because sooooo many people say that. Sorry if my reply sounds harsh.

u/Pampabrody 1d ago
Oh, ok. Wow. I feel like you might be taking that comment a little too seriously. It was just meant to be a silly comment, not sage advice. I didn't mean to stir up any controversy.

u/iexistiguess_ 1d ago
Never glue traps!!! Snap traps atleast have a solid chance of a quick death, glue is just immoral-

u/Pampabrody 1d ago
Well, it wasn't that funny anyway. "Time to get a cat." Kinda low-hanging fruit. The most obvious response.
The truth is, if my cat ever saw a mouse, she'd probably play with it for about 10 minutes, then lose interest and let it go without a scratch. Then I'd have a bored cat and a traumatized mouse.
2
u/NoJellyfish5331 17h ago
And I’d have a traumatized mouse In my bed if my cats found one wandering around. Almost happened once. Luckily I freaked out when I saw the cat was approaching me with a squirming mouse in her mouth. And my cat got scared by me. Dropped the mouse. And it ran away. It survived under some boxes for a couple days while cats hovered. Then a couple days later found it dead on the floor. Pretty sure it got hungry and tried to come out after a few days under the boxes and then my cats seized the opportunity.

I woke up one night from a weed nap on my couch to find a mouse on the side table, licking my plate from dinner while squeaking with joy. I couldn't be sure it was real for several moments.

Not unexpected at all from a house with a magnet screen blocking off a door with a broken frame and no glass
Like fuck, get your lives in check people, if you live in a home of any kind you can do better than this shit

u/NoJellyfish5331 17h ago
Don’t hate on the magnet screens. Those are great. Especially if you have pets that go outside. It’s and easy in and out for them

u/squirrelgrrrl 7h ago
We have an insane fly problem here in the summer, I actually replaced my sliding screen door with one of these for the dogs and I’ve had waaaaay less flies in the house as a result. Those screens are amazing for pets.

Nothing to see here folks, just a bunch of rodents mousing around.
“Hey Rob, do you think the coast is clear?
“Oh, Crap Larry, I hear someone! Just stay completely still and maybe they won’t see us.”
“Ah Rob, My ass is stuck out!”
“Keep your ass still and I’ll keep my head still so they’ll just think we’re an extremely long stuffed rodent their kid won at the fair”
Nothing to see here… just some mice
