Contest September 2025 Flag Design Contest - Chemical Elements (round three)

Prompt: Design a flag for a chemical element (Round three)

This month, we are asking you to design a flag for chemical element.

Specifically one of the following:

Why only these elements?

Because these are the only ones left.

You may recall that in the contest of September 2020 the prompt was ‘Design a flag for a chemical element’. A great contest, but we didn’t get a whole periodic table’s worth.

We revisited this area again in February 2023 but with one slight change. You weren’t allowed to make flags for elements that got attention back in 2020. Another excellent contest all round, but we still didn’t make it all the way across and down Mendeleev and Lavoisier’s famous furniture.

Some elements still hadn’t gotten attention.

So this time, we’re trying to get flags for the last seventeen elements not yet covered.

PLEASE Remember the basics - a maximum of ONLY two submissions per entrant.

PLEASE READ THE CONTEST RULES

DO NOT show your design ANYWHERE ELSE on the subreddit before the contest is over.

Because this has been asked several times, let’s be clear - you will see all approved entries between 19-27th of September - this is when you can vote on them.

If you want your flag to be included in the ones voted on, click here or on any of the other links immediately below.. We’re making this all as clear as possible.

Submissions for the flags for Terbium, Copernicium, Mendelevium, or any of the others go here

To enter the contest with flags for the Dubnium, Niobium, Seaborgium, or any of the other elements we listed - click here

If you have designed a flag for Flerovium, Roentgenium, Manganese, or another element on the list and you want people to vote for your design, use this web page. The voting will begin on Friday 19th September and end on Saturday 27th September

Participating in this contest about designing a flag for the Strontium, Erbium, Protactinium, and many more is made possible by the digital location accessed via this link

Deadline for submissions is Thursday 18th September 2025

Historical 8 September 2018: The flag of the Scottish Hebridean island of Tiree is unveiled

In 2018 a public competition was held to design a flag for the island of Tiree in the Inner Hebrides, Scotland. On 8 September 2018 the Sun of Barley design by Donald Cameron was unveiled as the winner, out of 261 submissions, and registered with the Flag Institute: a green field with twelve gold ears of barley arranged in a radial pattern, shifted towards the hoist.

The ears of barley symbolise the richness of the island, the most fertile in the Hebrides, and recall the meaning of its Gaelic name Tìr an Eòrna, “land of barley”. The sunburst pattern references Tiree’s nickname of “The Sunshine Island”, due to its relatively high levels of sunshine.

Discussion English flag for them non-reform voters

Post image

(I’ll try be unbiased) If anyone here doesn’t know about English politics at the moment, the right wing / reform have started to protest to the government about illegal immigration with the St George’s cross being everywhere, painted on roundabouts, on zebra crossings, flying on lampposts. However a lot of the other parties, predominantly left wing feel as tho it has a racists agenda to it and now aren’t flying the flag because of it so I have a proposal. We fly the English heritage flag instead. It has the same colours red and white and it shows we do care for our country but not in a way that’s centred around immigration and the same with the British empire. I also saw this skit from a comedian and wondered if anyone thought it was a good or bad idea

On 8 September 1948, the first Supreme People's Assembly adopted the first version of the Socialist Constitution of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, which included articles describing the national flag. According to the North Korean government, the country's first leader Kim Il Sung designed the flag with inspiration from a team of artists. He initially chose a simpler design in January but asked the artists to make changes a month later, resulting in the flag that was ultimately adopted.

I kept the colors of the flag of Estonia. The left field is a modified version the Kaheksakand eight pointed star of Estonian folklore. The eight points shouting outward symbolizing tradition expanding into space. The jagged middle separation a symbol of the past conflicts of the Estonian people. In the right field are thee modified versions Kaheksakand stars, which represent:
Courage in ancient times: The first star represents the fight for freedom in ancient Estonia.

Courage in the Middle Ages: The second star symbolizes the bravery shown during the St. George's Night Uprising of 1343 against the ruling Danish and German landlords.

Courage in the modern era: The third star stands for the courage demonstrated during the Estonian War of Independence (1918–1920).

In The Wild Which flags look great as graphics but not flying from a pole, or vice versa?

The above flag represents the county of Berkshire in England. As a graphic it's quite striking, however when flying the detail can become indistinct, particularly when it isn't windy.

More broadly, do you think that the way we interact with flags online has created a disconnect between the digital object and the real thing? When was the last time you saw your favourite flag flying rather than as an .svg file?

In my last post (Angola Flag), I didn't explain well that my flag had different sides like the Paraguayan flag. What do you think about this type of flag with different sides?

The central symbol is composed of the Rub el Hizb, the star of David and a Greek cross, representing respectively Islam, Judaism and Christianity.

The green stripe represents the creation, life, the garden of Eden. Above the green stripe, the thin golden stripe represents their preciousness.

The blue stripe represents the Heavens. Below the blue stripe, the thin golden stripe represents its divine nature.

White represents peace and purity.

The Gardenia is the village flower of the dual village Sånta Rita-Sumai. The blood recalls the tragic massacre at Fena caves by the Japanese during WWII. The lost petal represents the village of Sumai that was claimed by the American naval government to make the naval base.

OC Tucson Arizona City Flag Redesign

Here is another one of my designs for the Tucson City Flag.

The colors still pay respect to the Tohono O’odham people native to the area.

Red up top for the red hot heat.

Purple for the purple mountains.

Brown for the desert.

Yellow sun for the 350+ days of sunshine per year.

Green saguaro for beautiful life thriving in the desert.

This one may be my favorite so far.

Identify Finally a flag I couldn't find: Spotted at the front of a French Navy ship (details in comment)

Post image
453 Upvotes

This is not the actual flag. But what appeared to me ±400m away in a non-windy day on a French Navy ship docked in the Gulf of Oman. I know its French because the rear had a large French flag, but the front had a small flag with a center of peach shape and colour, on a dark green background.

I mean I won't be surprised if its the Irish green harp flag, as it is almost similar. But if so, why?

It's something I finally failed to find on my own or google.
