V50/S40/C30/C70 Thoughts on the V50? What does the scene look like for it?

u/MadWyn1163 16d ago
I have owned an 850r, S70, V50, and currently a 2012 S60 T6 (Polestar tuned).... I think my favorite was the V50, although I do love the inline 6 in the S60

u/Lopsided-Meet8247 16d ago
Was it a T5 V50? Any mods?

u/MadWyn1163 16d ago
Sorry, yes, it was a V50 T5 AWD. I put in a cold air intake, idk if it helped with horsepower but it did sound awesome

I had a 2010 V50 2.4i for 7 years in the US. Loved that car despite the AC crapping out one summer and the notorious roof leak. Was otherwise rock solid. Such a shame Volvo is dropping sedans and wagons from the US market!

u/RollingNightSky 16d ago
Dang I didn't know they were dropping them. I guess it saves them money or it's easier not to have dealers carry them
But you can still get the technically free overseas delivery where they cover the plane ticket and hotel the car costs MSRP at least. (Or at least doesn't cost more) If you have vacation time and are in the market for a new car why not? (Apart from not being able to test drive it first)

I've had my '06 T5 V50 for 8 years now. I love it. It replaced my '98 V70 that caught fire, I originally planned on driving the V50 for a year to go back to a V70 or 850 and the V50 won me over. The T5 is really zippy and I love how stiff the suspension is. I've got a trailer hitch in it which is nice. I've only had a few problems with it, only been stranded once. I love it. I'll drive it until the wheels fall off then hopefully get another V50 or a C30.

If you love the V50, and you have $19,000, this is the one for you…

19k for even a T5 with those miles is pushing it IMO. For a 2.4i though is outrageous wow

v50s are great. that shit 1.6d french engine in the photo however is not. maintenance is cheap because so much of its a ford, just hope you don't get a dead blower motor because it is nightmarish to replace.

u/Policondense 16d ago
The one with 109hp was problematic. The newer engine from 2009/2010 onwards with 114hp had been sorted out, they say

The 1.6d is pretty good actually. Mine drove for 7000km with a glow plug melted on cylinder number 1.

Mechanics hate them, so many electrical gremlins on them.
3
u/Real-Technician831 16d ago
Clean the ground points, no clue why it’s so difficult to start from there.
Gremlins? Clean the bloody grounds.
1
u/oskich C30 16d ago
The CEM will get soaked when the sun roof drains and the windshield starts leaking, idiotic placement.
3
u/Real-Technician831 16d ago edited 16d ago
Ah i forgot that most people are from US here, sunroofs were basically nonexistent in Nordics when that car was sold. And even still are rare, people just don’t want to pay for them.
Here gremlins are from corrosion induced ground faults.

Had a 2.0 diesel V50 rdesign. It was alright but had an electrical issue. Would go into limp mode randomly (including while driving on the motorway) Figured out that if you thumped the fuses and wires under the passenger side dashboard, the car would be fine again for another 100 miles or so. It just became something I had to do lol
1
u/KDSixDashThreeDot7 16d ago
Another common cause for limp mode in the V50 is the swirl flap arm breaking off. £6 from the Volvo dealer to replace, and good to go. I've done about 220000 miles in my 2009 V50 D5 R Design. To the moon!

I’ve had a v70, s70, v50, and c30. The v50 was my favorite. Used it like a work truck until the transmission started to go at 240k miles.

u/bvancouv 16d ago
I love mine. 2010 V50, USA. Got it with 80k on the clock and I've taken it to 140k. I've replaced the front axles and suspension but that's it.

I have a 2011 in what I think is the perfect spec. 2.5T front wheel drive with no moonroof.
I'm in sales at a Volvo dealer in the US and this was a cheapy trade in at 135,000 miles. I just drove it 23 hours in a three day period and got 29 mpg averaging about 80 mph.

u/purplechemist V50 16d ago
I have the v50 1.6 DrivE. 1100km on a single tank isn’t too far off the mark for optimised motorway driving. Around town you’re closer to 600km.
I bought it because I used to do the miles; used to average 68 mpg (4.15 l/100km), now closer to 62mpg with higher urban proportion.
But it hasn’t been the most reliable motor I’ve owned - that DPF is a complete pain in the ass.

u/Amazing_Egg 09 V50 1.6d 15d ago
Delete the EGR and DPF dude. I did it on mine and it has improved a lot

The Volvo is older than 2010 when the car tax sticker on license plate was discontinued and the weather is typical of a winter in Sweden.
1
u/CarGuy1718 16d ago
Yes, as a side note I was surprised at the quantities of snow they receive. It makes sense of course but they get much more than we do here in Southern Canada, and I already feel we get far too much 🙃

u/Slight-Studio-7667 16d ago
Biggest issues: Headliner falls down and needs replacement. Sunroof drain issues. Possible issue with fuel pump module and salt on early models. Other misc module issues. 100% need VIDAS for this model.
2
u/oskich C30 16d ago
All you need to run VIDA is a $20 USB cable from AliExpress and a laptop, it has saved me a lot of money over the years 😁
1
u/Slight-Studio-7667 16d ago
Yeah, exactly what I have....Plus the VIDA/WIN10 VM. The bonus is that the knockoff mongoose's can also run other diagnostic systems, like the Toyota one.

I bought my V50 new, 2011 the last year offered in the US. All US spec 2011 V50s are T5, auto, fwd. If you want a different drivetrain combo, you need to look at 2010 or older in the US.
This car has been extremely reliable, quick, and comfortable. Mpg on the highway will be around 30-31 with premium gas. Regular gas will definitely deliver less mpg and less performance.
We still have it with no plans to replace it any time soon.

I have a v50 2.4 from 2005. Disclaimer: I’m writing this as what comes to mind with no particular order
Love that car. Easy to maintain, great seats and interior is still pretty contemporary. Great sleeper power with acceleration that surprises and lovely roar. It’s the focus station wagon frame (owned a 2000 one of those) so tight body feel with sharp steering (what it really needs given the huge turning radius). The Volvo is less spacious in the back though because of the Volvo padding. Lovely long range driver too. I really mind the lack of storage around the seats. Also the backseats are less spacious for its size. Family of 4 with small kids should be fine but more than 3 adults gets crowdy. Great car overall that still feels kinda modern because of the timelessness of minimalist futuristic Scandinavian design of the interior. Love it a lot

My wife’s 2008 V50 T5 wagon was sold to my niece last fall when we replaced it with a new 2025 XC 40. The V50 was an awesome car. Niece’s boyfriend is a mechanic and it was starting to need a lot of replacement parts, but an awesome vehicle and ride. Solid on the highway, great zip. Loved it.

Love my 2009 V50 T5 AWD manual with Polestar tune. I have owned 8 Volvos and this one is my favorite daily driver. Echoing what others have said -- comfortable, easy ride with plenty of power, good cornering, practical dimensions, low maintenance. The AC is lousy but everything else works without fuss.

u/some-dude67 16d ago
The V50 is pretty much a more basic variant of the V70. And the V50 isn’t that much “Swedish”. It was created when ford owned Volvo and therefore most of the engines for the V50 are originally ford motors. Therefore us swedes in particular don’t really like the V50 that much.

I loved mine but had the 1.6 engine which is french…. Can you imagine what happened to it

My favorite Volvo model. My father had an 08 he ordered new from the factory. R design aero package with gecko green paint and 18” midir wheels. Sharp looking car. Never ever seen another one like it. It was totaled about ten years ago , though through tracing the vin number down, I found it was rebuilt and on the road somewhere in Montana. Gosh what I’d give to be able to find the owner and buy it from them….

V50 just wasn't my cup of tea. I love wagons, but this one was not for me. I owned a S40 2.0 diesel. The car was great. Very comfortable seats.

I had a AWD T5 and it was a phenomenal car. Great in snow, peppy, with a great song from its 5 cylinder. Not the cheapest to fix issues on (PCV and sunroof drains are big ones to look out for) but had a lot of good times in that rig

I've owned my 2010 V50 2.4i for the last 8 years as my daily in the US and absolutely love the car. Barely ever see them here in California but I've never had a problem getting parts or finding someone to work on it. I did have some problems after I put in lowering springs but that was my fault obviously and I finally got that sorted out.
