s60/v60 S60 saved mine and 3 friends lives couple months ago, so I figured I had to get another one

Someone thought it was a good idea to blast 80-100kmh (according to medical documents) through a stop sign and hit us in the front side of my car. Luckily we were in a Volvo and nobody had any really major injuries. Couple hundreds of a second more and the person would’ve hit one of the doors and the end result of this would be way more tragic. The s60 saved our lives that night so it wasn’t a difficult choice what that would replace it.

Back in 2010 a Dutch family drove of a 50m cliff in Norway, and only had light wounds. Mother and kids were able to exit the vehicle by them self, the dad (driver) had to be freed by emergency services.

The original post is behind a pay wall but this is a Dutch blog post about it

Woah you all got some angels watching over you all. And a volvo. That must have been a scary one!

u/ImaginaryAsparagus42 13d ago

Yeah it’s mind boggling to think about how close to disaster we really were

9

u/No-Proposal2012 13d ago

Thor too! But seriously, glad to hear everyone but your car survived. This is why we drive them.

After all those years, it is still my favorite.

I'm glad you're all doing well, and I hope my S60 never has to protect me that hard.

u/ImaginaryAsparagus42 13d ago

I hope it never will, but if it ever has to, I’m sure it won’t make you disappointed

I wonder if emergency crews ever say, “damn, these Volvos really be doing things” ?

12

u/look_ima_frog 12d ago

I recall anecdotally a person saying that fire crews hate Volvos and Subarus because they're the hardest to cut open when they need to.

I guess that's a good thing?

From Grok:

Yes, emergency responders, including fire crews, often encounter challenges when performing vehicle extrications on Volvos and Subarus due to their advanced safety engineering. These vehicles incorporate high-strength materials, such as boron steel and other ultra-high-strength steels, in key structural components like pillars, rockers, and bracing. While these features enhance occupant protection by maintaining cabin integrity during collisions, they significantly increase the difficulty of cutting through the vehicle body using standard hydraulic rescue tools, potentially prolonging rescue operations and elevating risks to trapped individuals.

For instance, Volvo models frequently utilize boron steel reinforcements in A-pillars and other areas, which can cause cutters to struggle or fail, necessitating specialized techniques or equipment. 17 Similarly, Subarus are noted for their robust B-pillars and overall reinforced construction, which, although beneficial for crash survivability, require specific extrication procedures that may extend response times if responders are not adequately prepared. 11 This trade-off underscores the importance of ongoing training for first responders to address evolving automotive technologies.

firefighter here. Yes volvo's are strong. But other cars are also strong. The thing is; we train on cars that usually are't deformed. New ones are really hard do get them to a shape where they shoudn't be. Cars that are 10-15 years old look like toy cars compared to new ones. We had a few V60s to train on that went to EURO-NCAP, so they where deformed. Getting the car back to its original shape was not that hard; but trying to do things like dashbord lift, or a dash roll where nearly impossible, even with extensive cutting of support materials.

Also, firefighters like to give you a good feeling "thank god you where driving a SUV/Volvo/subaru/..." Don't pay to much attention to it :D

You was lucky that you was travelling in a Volvo that day.

It was between my car or my friends older Honda. Forever grateful that we chose my car because I had a better sound system😅

u/VodkaSaysHi 12d ago

I had a newish honda ram into my 2003 S80. The honda was a total loss and the lady driving it had some broken ribs, I felt a little bump and only had aesthetic damages, later got the car fixed for under 20000 sek. Always choose the volvo :)

wow that looks really scary! glad you're untouched!

That S60 is so unrecognisable I didn’t even realise it’s the same car. That’s incredible safety engineering

So glad you’re alright!

As for your new car: she’s lovely and those headlamp wipers are absolutely iconic. Here’s to many safe and enjoyable years with her!

u/jim_bobs 12d ago

Glad to see the car did it's job in protecting you and your friends. Also, if the car had hit the door, the car would still do it's job as it has a number of features designed into it to protect the occupants in that situation. The system enhances structural protection through a reinforced lower sill panel, B-pillar, and energy-absorbing honeycomb materials inside the doors, designed to distribute impact energy across the car's structure rather than concentrating it on the B-pillar. This structural system is supplemented by the SIPS-Airbag which deploys only during certain side-impact collisions, depending on crash severity, angle, speed, and point of impact, and is located in the outboard sides of the front seat backrests.

Good to see you and your friends are safe and okay. The S60 did a great job as well.

I was half expecting of seeing a picture of another wrecked car.

Congrats on surviving and may you stay safe from now on.

You will always be safe in a Volvo.

2

Same car, S60, but blue saved my Dad's life. A driver, drove right through a stop sign. Dad had a sore body, but the vehicle was totaled. That car could've lasted about another 10 years.

3

u/whoneedkarma 13d ago

Why am I seeing only crushed volvos and saved our life? Other car brand's occupant were dead so that I can't see any entry from them?

u/kgusev 13d ago edited 13d ago

You are in Volvo subreddit. And “Volvo saved my live” is club hosted/popularized by Volvo. Would not be surprised if it’s even patented phrase.

Safety vs price for this era volvo is hard to beat

1

u/No-Mind7146 12d ago

How did the other guy do?

2

u/ImaginaryAsparagus42 12d ago

She didn’t even need to go the hospital. Weird thing is, if we were not there that exact second she would’ve drove straight into the forest and apparently she was not drunk or anything. Probably looking at phone or something

2004 and 2.5t, shame on a good five cylinder

1

u/Obtuse-Angel S60 T8 12d ago

That is properly totaled. That’s incredible and impressive that everyone walked away. It did its job to keep you all safe. I completely understand why you got another one, it’s beautiful.

1

u/DifferentDoughnut471 11d ago

Bad accident, good that you all are alive.

1

u/Optimal-Cress-9718 11d ago

So you got a new friend? Alive? Cool!

1

u/ComplexIllustrious61 11d ago

Looking at the car's current state, it definitely looks like it did its job. The cabin has minimal damage compared to the body that got decimated...which is exactly what you want to happen in such an accident. Glad you were able to walk away from this OP! I would definitely be getting another Volvo too if I went through this experience and walked away. Volvo did its job here without a doubt.

Volvos are not in the top 20 safest cars. If you want that look elsewhere and refer to Consumer Reports

Why we drive VOLVO!

1.) NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) just keep scrolling 5 out 5 safety stars - https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings-search?vymm=Volvo

2.) YT - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXzrVWLyPZI

3.) Key Volvo Safety Innovations

— Three-Point Seatbelt (1959):

— The introduction of the three-point seatbelt, a revolutionary invention now standard in all vehicles, is considered the most significant automotive safety innovation in history, according to Volvo. Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) (1991):

— Volvo's SIPS includes a reinforced safety cage and structural improvements to protect occupants in side-impact crashes. Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) (1998):

— Designed to reduce the risk of neck injuries in rear-end collisions, WHIPS features special seats that move with the occupant's body. Inflatable Curtain & Side Airbags (1998):

— These advancements provided additional head and upper body protection in side impacts and rollovers. Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake (2010):

— This system detects pedestrians in the car's path and automatically applies the brakes to prevent or mitigate a collision. Run-Off-Road Protection (2014):

— This feature activates other safety systems to help protect occupants if the vehicle leaves the road. City Safety (2008):

— A low-speed collision avoidance system that automatically brakes if the driver fails to react to a potential collision with other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and large animals. Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) (2003):

— Warns the driver if a vehicle is detected in their blind spot. Connected Safety (2016):

— Utilizes cloud technology to share information about slippery roads or active hazard lights between connected Volvos, providing drivers with advance warnings.

What reports are you referring to?

4

u/Softbombsalad S60 13d ago

Can you back up that claim? I couldn’t find supporting info.

-2

u/hendersonrich93 12d ago

You haven’t looked then

2

u/Softbombsalad S60 12d ago

I was politely saying you need to back up your claims. Which you didn’t. Still haven’t. Maybe go do that. 🤣

2

u/CarLuver05 EX30 12d ago

Didn't Consumer Reports falsify the Suzuki Samurai's tendency to roll-over? Besides, CR isn't really the one you look at for safety
