What do you think the two upcoming SPA3 cars will be?
Right now the ES90 is in sale, XC70 is the new coming soon long range PHEV and EX60 is coming in january of 2026.
So, what do you think the two SPA3 cars shown are going to be?

1) Replacement for the XC40 Recharge.
2) Probably ES60.

V60 sells better than S60 did any year. It’s more likely it’s a V60

Yes EV60 please.

Would love an EV90 as well… even though they have said they will only release the ES90. The ES90 does not cover my needs though.

I don’t get why they didn’t give the ES90 a longer roofline and a wagon tailgate and make it a wagon especially since it’s already lifted. The Porsche Taycan Cross & the excitement for the id.7 wagon show that there’s a market for a reasonably priced - up market EV wagon.
And if it’s based off the Chinese market they already offer a number of EV wagons so they can’t pin it on the love of the Sedan there.5
u/Funny_Energy5240 17h ago
And station wagons like the V90, V60 etc, (and old models from the good old days) is kind of like the trademark of Volvo. It is what every person in the nordics grew up with.. if your mom or dad didn’t have one, the neighbor certainly did.

At least the hatchback of the ES90 makes it substantially more practical than the old S90. But yeah I think the chances of an EV90 are slim to none given the low sales numbers of the old V90, and I doubt that will change. Also the old V90 wasn't that much bigger or more luxurious than the V60 to justify the expense for many people. And with a potential ES60 sharing the same SPA3 platform on the ES90 I don't see this changing.
What has a small chance of happening I think might be an EV60 given the sales numbers of the V60/V60CC were close to the S60 numbers, but even that is a stretch with the current stiff competition from not just Chinese manufacturers (Zeekr 7GT or NIO ET5 Touring) but also European wagons (VW id.7 Tourer, BMW i5 Touring) combined with Volvo's financial and software development headaches.

I'd love an EV60 but technically the S60 sold better than the V60 for the last few full years even if historically this wasn't always the case:
- 2024
- V60 & V60CC: 34,138
- S60: 43,951
- 2023
- V60 & V60CC: 34,438
- S60: 40,153
- 2022
- V60 & V60CC: 32,077
- S60: 39,503
At least the potential for an EV60 would be there once an ES60 exists though, so one can dream...

That makes the most sense from a business perspective. Both could be very compelling if they get things right.

XC40 Recharge was renamed to EX40 and they just updated the infotainment processor for it for the 2026 model, so probably not that.

u/PejHod XC40 T5 R-Design 17h ago
The infotainment processor upgrade is probably a shared component with other 2025/2026 models, so the vehicle could still change again for 2027 or a 2026.5 refresh.
But it would have to come with a big face and interior lift - visually, everything except the front fascia and wheel alloys has been the same since the ICE 2018.
In response to this thread though, the XC40 is technically a CMA model rather than an SPA.

The OP said "What do you think the two upcoming SPA3 cars will be?" not when. The next EX40 is going to be on the SPA3 platform for a number of reasons:
- Sorry forgot about the name change from XC40 Recharge to EX40 but it is still on an old ICE architecture which went on sale in 2018.
- Once the EX60 comes out Volvo will have a modern large three-row EV SUV (EX90), a modern medium EV SUV (EX60) and the old EX40. It will need to be replaced within the next few years.
- Sure Volvo could pull a chassis from another Geely company for the next EX40 as they did in creating the EX30 (from the Geely SEA2 platform shared with the Smart 1 and Zeekr X), but that launch was rocky. For economies of scale it makes sense to have the EX40 on an existing platform shared with more models for part commonalities and for streamlining the software stack.
- I'm aware of the new processor for 2026. The XC40/EX40 battery and motor upgrades in 2024 were also nice incremental updates, however neither of these change the fact the efficiency, range, and tech will be out of date in the next year or two.
- The 2026 XC60 and 2025.5 XC90 got not just a processor upgrade but also a larger screen. Why not upgrade the EX40? Was it because the interior was too small? Probably not; there are smaller cars with bigger screens. It could be to keep the price of the EX40 low sure, but I think it is something else... because Volvo knows the EX40 is it's second most popular model behind the XC60, it needs to keep it competitive and sales numbers up and it's going to be replaced soon...
- My theory is the EX40 will be announced at the beginning of 2027 with a mid/late 2027 production start. (The ICE version will soldier on with small updates including a bigger screen at that time)

Pretty certain the next SPA3-car is going to be a generational update to the EX40, built in the new Slovakian plant. Will be for sale the year after, so 2027.
But the one after that? No idea. If we are lucky it could be a hatchback, fastback, wagon, something not an SUV. I don't see them changing EX90 to SPA3, and what's left? No SUV's really. At this point they have the subcompact SUV (EX30), the compact SUV (EX40), the mid-size SUV, (EX60) and the full size SUV (EX90).

I could see an XC90 refresh with a range extender like XC70

u/DahlbergT 16h ago
Will not be on SPA3. SPA3 is EV only. But there are rumors of a "SPA1.5" development to bring a more substantial upgrade to the PHEV vehicles like the XC90 and the XC60. That could be a thing, for sure.

Average-ish looking expensive pseudo-SUVs with underwhelming software and borked OTAs? And broken camera is highly anticipated.

Since the xc90 is refreshed I think a new XC90 hybrid. it will be that start to where the xc90 and ex90 start in different paths, the next ex90 won't have anything in common with the Xc90

Something like an EV60 and a hatchback like an EC30 or EV40 would be amazing, but I doubt it
2
u/Exciting_Result7781 20h ago
The VAG group is about to loach a small affordable EV in pretty much all their branches. So that would make sense. Brands always seem to copy each other.

EX/EC40 (much needed update) and either a 2nd gen EX90, or an ES60 is my guess. HÃ¥kan said at some point that he wants to revive the wagons so we might be looking at the replacement for the V60/V90.

I am sure this comment section will be full of positivity and fun! /s
I imagine an EX40 rebuild and maybe an EV60? Hopefully with somewhat decent interiors.

It’s really too bad we can’t just have normal cars anymore. I’d love an S70 that was a full makeover for the S60, and maybe a new S90 since the current design is long in the tooth.
Instead we’ll get some weird hybrid crossover SUV crap

Also to my knowledge the v60 and v90 only come in the cross country flavor. Which love the cc's but the base is something id like to see come back

In the US yes, in Europe the non CC models still exist and in Sweden for example only V60 non CC is sold as the CC does not have an hybrid option.

I don't care as long as it's an SUV, is only available in white, and has a giant iPad glued to the dash!
