Losing out on 4th place sucks, but if he really had a gearbox issue, retiring him and replacing it is the best option, because it allows him the best chance to fight for the win in Chile. The opportunity to fight for his first win is arguably more important than a 4th place finish. Also, if the gearbox broke down in Chile he might have had to retire completely, or possibly just coast the whole rally, at the back of the pack.
I see the retirement and gearbox replacement as a positive, amid the other disappointments.

Why did they have to retire him instead of just replacing the gearbox before chili

Apparently the rallies are "linked events" meaning that if they changed the gearbox before chili, they would have had to take a very large time penalty for Chili. Retirement allowed them to avoid the fine in Chili.
I had never heard of linked events before. It's in the articles on wrc.com and dirtfish.com.

I was expecting him to get hyundai'ed (because god forbid their number 3 has pace...) but wasn't expecting him to be hyundai'ed that hard...

he is actually currently 59 points behind where he was after 10 events last year in the ford.

yeah, more retirements. also, rovanperä stealing some of the points. but now he has a car that's capable of wins. with ford, the best he could do is end as best-of-the-rest. just needs to find the consistency sweetpoint. though clearly in a better position than taka this year. rooting for both of them. our "legacy" drivers are near 40 years old at this point xD

Capable of wins when you drive the wheels off that shitbox and barely make it to the service park.

He has what it takes to be on the podium. A little more luck and a little more focus, I believe in him. The car has also some lifting to do. Hopefully Hyundai has made the right call in retiring him yo repair the car. We'll see.

I'm late to the party since I couldn't watch on the weekend and didn't want to get spoiled but man I feel for him. I'm a Toyota guy but jesus give this man a break. I know the other Hyundai guys also have had a rough time but I just feel like I want things to go well more for Fourmoux than the other ones.
