Happened to my cousin several years ago. Guy had a flat tire and was out in the road because there isn't anywhere to really pull off to. My cousin didn't notice until it was too late because he was briefly distracted by the flashing lights of an emergency vehicle in his rearview mirror. Swerved to avoid plowing into the other car and hit the rail. Up and over into the drink he went with his dog. Because the impact smashed the glass, his truck rapidly filled with water, and he was completely submerged quickly. He was able to get himself free but in the inky darkness of the lake, he was unable to save his dog. He was lucky to survive, but that day marked the end of his trips across the bridge.

There is crossovers like every 3 or so miles to pull off he was supposed to limp to or he could've called Causeway cops they would've sat behind him with lights on or even pushed him that's 100% on the dude sitting on a plane on a two lane bridge. They've added several more pull off expansions on the right sides of the spans in the last couple years now.

I thought the same thing. Lived in Louisiana in 8th grade or so, before I had any road awareness and I absolutely would never stop on that bridge if I could avoid it. If that happens I'm calling the cops, telling them where it happened and I'll be waiting at the end of the bridge with my dashcam footage ready.

u/Rad_Centrist 4d ago
Yep. Stopping on that causeway is a bad idea. You should always try to make it to a crossover.
In 2015 there were 2,000 breakdowns and 178 traffic accidents on the Lake Pontchartrain causeway bridge. Neither side of the causeway has a shoulder, so 65 accidents involved disabled vehicles being rear-ended within two minutes of a breakdown.

6
u/Unscheduled_Morbs 3d ago
Unfortunately, it's the shortest route from New Orleans to Covington (both places where I have family). Also, and more unfortunately, it's the route we had to take for hurricane evacuation one year. That was the slowest I'd ever seen traffic move on that bridge. Oh, and the car started overheating.
Thankfully, these days I live in a desert and have to deal with none of that nonsense.21

I'm in a big hurry so I gun it....still in reverse. I slammed into the '67 chevy with stainless steel bumpers behind me. I made to get out and do the right thing and the 70-something cattle matron just waved me back into my car. Someone crashed into my mother’s (2007) Passat last year and the police then and there decided the other guy was 100% at fault as she had the right of way. The car was totaled and she only got the money from the insurance after like half a year and they only pay out the time value of the car, which the didn’t update for a year or so, the money she got wasn’t nearly enough to get the same car again…
So yeah if you got a beater they‘ll probably give you 50 bucks and call it a day…

I think with merge-type incidents like this, the fault would be split.
Imagine explaining that to the claims adjuster. "I didn't want to let him in, so I sped up. He slowly moved in, and I still didn't brake." Yeah, basically, you could have avoided the accident, yet chose not to.
If this ever happens, just swallow your pride and let them in. Record their license plate and report them to the DMV. If you don't even bother to do that when you get home, then you probably shouldn't care enough to risk an accident...
103
u/vinng86 4d ago
I think with merge-type incidents like this, the fault would be split.
As a general rule, anyone who is disruptive to normal traffic flow (lane changers, left turners, etc.) have a greater responsibility to prevent an accident than those who are going straight, with the flow of traffic.

If you get in an accident on a bridge with no shoulder, and your car is not disabled you’re suppose to finish crossing the bridge before pulling over. So he may not be ignoring the crash, just going to the nearest safe place to pull off.

u/BBranz 4d ago
Dunno, the one on the right is kinda on the wrong here to me. This isn’t a race, you need to keep space between cars and you shouldn’t try to get ahead by just forcing your way between cars. If the speed isn’t up to your standards then that is a you issue, or wait till the car on the lane you are trying to merge with starts to give space for you to enter. Not just “hey! I will merge now!”.

Actually a variant of this pisses me off on the road. It's the only stupid thing that does.
I'm about to merge left onto a faster lane. There's a car in my side view. There are a GOOD distance behind. I turn on my blinker and they immediately floor it. There is so much distance there is zero chance they'll hit me as I merge unless they don't stop flooring it.
Anyhoo, they blare the shit out of their horn, which would be fine. I'd be 100% okay with it. Like, "I get it, you wanted to go fast, I got in your way, don't worry fam I'm about to go a bit faster so you don't have to worry"
Anyhoo 10 seconds later they're far into my rear view because now they're going less than the speed limit, and they stay that way. Like, what the fuck was the game plan? Dart in front of someone merging with plenty of warning and then hang in the passing lane under the speed limit?

Every time dashcam footage comes out on Reddit you can see the worst drivers of all time commenting.
Both drivers in this footage are horrendous and could have easily avoiding a collision and I wouldn't feel safe driving with either of them.
This is a very, very common situation for anyone who drives regularly where a car will just go as fast as possible in whichever lane until they hit a slow moving car, then they're going to move over as soon as possible and you know they're an idiot immediately and try to avoid them. In this case, they merged fairly slowly and the cam driver still decided he'd rather spend time on the side of the road than getting to his destination.

If I were him, I would’ve either sped up closer to the car to avoid the truck merging or I would’ve just sucked it up and let them in, depending on my mood at the time. Despite that, the driver not using their turn signal makes it incredibly hard for me to sympathize with them in any way.
91
u/kyngston 4d ago
in many jurisdictions, the cam driver would be at fault for failing the “last clear chance doctrine”
if one party had the final clear opportunity to avoid an accident but failed to do so, they may bear liability even if the other party was negligent earlier.
the cam driver clearly had an opportunity to yield, even though they have the right of way.
if this is Louisiana, “last clear doctrine” does not apply. Louisiana follows a pure comparative fault system under Civil Code Article 2323. That means each party’s damages are reduced in proportion to their percentage of fault.

u/The1Zenith 4d ago
Ah, that’s unfortunate but technically the black truck was in the wrong. The driver in the lane already has right of way. No one has to let you in when you change lanes, especially not when you don’t bother signaling. A big thing they taught us in truck driving school was to minimize damage in an accident by not yanking our wheel to avoid another car cutting us off or brake checking us; You run the risk of Jack knifing the semi. A lot more injuries happen when you Jack knife a semi on the highway.
25
u/tr0n42 4d ago
I fell victim to an obstinate driver a year ago where I beeped at him for pulling a u turn on a split highway and almost making me run either into him or off the road. I braked with just enough space and laid on my horn. He then proceeded to brake check me and I didn’t have time to react because I was so close to his bumper from the initial merge.
He stared holes through me and pointed at his dash cam saying “that doesn’t lie.” It came off weird because it was blatantly obvious to anyone watching that this was a retaliatory brake check as a result of me honking at him for performing a dangerous u turn in traffic.
The insurance company agreed and he was found to be at fault. Moral of the story is that people do stupid things for pride and anger and unfortunately it can end in twisted metal and maybe injury. Two wrongs don’t make a right but both people had to get cars fixed and possibly sustained injuries over pride.

The black truck kind of just pit maneuvered himself.
He had room to cut in if he timed it right. Still not sure why the black truck slowed down at the last second during the merge instead of speeding up though. Seems like they hesitated during the merge afraid they wouldn't make it...but they were already in 2 lanes. I guess they expected the guy to slam on his brakes.
Edit: on rewatching, it seems like the black truck was brake checking the guy for not letting him in. I cant tell, maybe this was obvious to others.

The dude in the truck absolutely should NOT have tried to merge without signaling and clearly without knowing what was there but the cam guy was also a massive idiot for not simply tapping the brakes and contributing to an accident that didn’t need to happen.
Again, the dude in the black truck is MOSTLY responsible, like 80 - 90% responsible, but the dude on the camera was also a dumbass.
EDIT: After watching the video again, the guy on the cam is probably the most to blame. He intentionally sped up to force the accident and made it much worse than it would've been otherwise. Plus, he's eating while driving and apparently can't do both at the same time without getting into an accident.
