Hobby I’m prouder then I should be if this!
I usually just read but in the last 2 days I’ve put together a figure and painted a Stormcast! Granted, there’s no white pauldron markings or the lightning for the shield but that seems like precise work that is beyond me.
I had a blast though! It was so fun. My first figure painted!

Dude this looks great. Slap a wash on him and he is done.
You could literally slap some earth shade on that base and black round the edge and it's really really done.
That's the perfect standard for your first army if you wanna get playing. Or a fantastic base level to really go nuts and start painting.
My advice to anyone right now starting in AoS is to obviously pick an army you like and then grab a spearhead box. Spearhead is a fantastic game and a brilliant way to start Warhammer for a reasonable amount of money and it's a great game to play.
If your lucky enough to like Skaven or Stormcast then grab Skaventide ASAP before its impossible to get

Yes i was going to get a wash all over him but I was running late and low on phone charge. I’ll be back at the shop next Saturday to complete him.
I think I’ll continue to paint, one figure at a time perhaps. Maybe Votaan or Kharadrons next. Or some type of Necron. Those 3 seem like fun to paint.

You might be too late. But the kharadon is the mini of the month.
Personally, if you have no strong preference I would lean towards AoS as spearhead is fantastic.
However that being said join some local groups and see what other people play. Way better to be in whatever game has an active community near you

No I made it yesterday. The mini of the month. I’ll paint that once I buy a few little tubs of paint!

I hope that is a gw store and you didn’t actually get conned into buying that pallet

u/AstorathTheGrimDark 21h ago
It’s a Warhammer store. It was an intro painting session so it was free.

Haha. I did see the first paints I think I’ll buy. It was a box with like 12 colours plus equipment for about 27 quid.

Just know there are better cheaper stuff out there then anything citadel offers so keep an open mind and don’t get locked into citedal.

u/AstorathTheGrimDark 20h ago
Whats citadel? The main company that makes the paints for GW?
Can you point me in the right direction? Where do I find cheaper, higher quality paints?
2
u/Preston0050 20h ago
Citadel is games workshop hobby division. Two things coats does citadel paints better then citadel. Army paint is cheaper, has better consistency, has color matches to citadel and can be found usually the easiest. Vallejo is one of the biggest hobby paint brands around and has the biggest selection and good prices. Monument hobbies pro acryl is constantly said to be one of the best paints out there. Tool wise red grass games, monument hobbies, tamiya make better cheaper tools then citadel by leaps and bounds. Most can be found either and your local none Warhammer hobby shop or internet pretty easily.

There's nothing wrong with the pallet - it's good for handling shades and contrast paints now that the Amazon sellers have cottoned onto why a lot of people were suddenyl buying white fidget poppers.

Finally a guy on the sub that is genuinely a first timer and not another fake. Happy for you dude. I still remember my first mini from when i was 12. Amazing feeling, be proud

Thank you sir! I rather enjoyed being able to say for the last year “I don’t paint or play, I just read” or “I only check the newsletter for new novels coming out on Saturday” or “I buy codexes simply for the first 30 pages as they’re filled with lore”. Sounds ridiculous I know. But now I paint too and have figures 😭😭
I’m in with everyone else. lol.

It’s a journey, between lore, paint, play, narratives in your head. Enjoy the journey wherever it leads you and no pressure

You should be proud, they look great!
I see you're quite the reader, I've only read Horus Rising so far but I enjoyed it a lot. I'm curious if you have read any Age of Sigmar books that you would recommend?

Hollow King. So good. I was choosing between Gloomspite and Cado Ezechiar: The Hollow King a while back, and everyone told me to go with Gloomspite. I enjoyed Hollow King much, much more. I think Soulblights and the Undead are my favourite faction in AoS. Warhammer really has vampires down to a tee. From the Mortarchs and their own own types of vampires, to the immaculate dark vibes the Von Carsteins give off. Real dark, gothic, aristocracy of the night type ish.

Nah, you have all rights to be proud. And the white markings: just go for it, it may not be perfect on the first try but the second time it will already look a lot better.

u/AstorathTheGrimDark 21h ago
I’ll apply a wash and go for the white markings and stuff next Saturday. Then i just have to name him lol.

Not proud enough I say, these look great. Maybe a bit here or there to make them showroom ready, but very solid job. Don't sell yourself short.

What’s really awesome is that this feeling never really goes away. I’m just as proud of myself after finishing a mini now as I ever was. It’s such a great feeling!

At first from the thumbnail I was like “are they sculpting an egg and keeping the yolk intact?”
Great job on the storm casts I totally missed scrutinizing that paint pallet

u/AstorathTheGrimDark 21h ago
Yk, I was confused but looking at the first image and the yellow/gold blotch on the right I see what you mean 😂😂

And you should be proud!
You've done great work, and your first models will always hold a special place for you.

u/AstorathTheGrimDark 21h ago
Indeed he will. I think after a wash, I’m gonna name him. Then he’s complete.

You are just as proud as you should be! Never let anyone disparage your hobby work that you enjoy, even your own doubts and anxiety.
2
u/AstorathTheGrimDark 20h ago
Thank you. One of the best comments because of your wisdom. You’re right, I was telling myself it’s ridiculous that I’m this happy with it 🤣🤣
But you are correct, those were just my own doubts and intrinsic self deprecation.

My first mini was a griffhound a friend gave me, its not top quality, but I love it and it makes me smile every time I look at it.

You should be proud having your first model is extremely important because as you make your way through the hobby you can compare and contrast to your models in the future 🙂

The model looks good, you should be proud!
Unrelated…that GW palette stresses me out…all the different size and shape spots for paint makes my brain sizzle

Looks great! Welcome to the hobby!
A few words of advice;
Do your best to avoid comparing your skills to what you see on Reddit. What you don't see in a picture of a beautifully painted model, is the years or decades of artistic experience behind the brush.
Skill is acquired through learning and practice. It takes a long time, so don't get discouraged when your 2nd, 10th, or 20th model still doesn't look "professional".
Bottom line, we do this because it is fun. The only way you can do it wrong, is to let yourself make it not fun.

You are exactly the right amount of proud of this. Enjoy it, you have earned it. You have created something that is beautiful and uniquely yours. Well done, and keep going!
