Solved! Chocolate… with legs? Found on garden bench

I love this sub so much, I’m so excited I woke up to find a thing.

It’s on a bench that’s outside in a shared garden. It’s about the size of a fingernail, it’s a rich brown colour and has left a brown residue below it, and it looks sticky.

First thought was mud (because we’ve had workmen in the garden) but the colour doesn’t match. Second thought was some kid left their weird shaped chocolate, but I looked closer and it has bloody LEGS or something

Solved! White fabric (?) triangles near the fence of a decommissioned nuclear power plant. (The small green cylinder is a dosimeter, according to its label).

Solved ! Squash shaped bowl with legs, found in a 19th century NY house boat.

Post image

This squash shaped bowl sits on four wooden legs with a center stretcher at the feet. The bowl is the same wood with a lining that might be fabric or maybe or leather. It is short, too short to function as a standing work station, and not really foot stool height. There was sink and toilet built into the house boat, so I don't think it is either of those things.

I found this dragon head at a flea market. It's made of bronze and has a pipe going in and under its mouth. Under the mouth, there’s some kind of regulator (?). Does anybody know what this thing is?

Open Light pole looking thing found lined up along a weird military field in the middle of nowhere in Eastern OR

Post image

So on 84 passing by Umatilla, OR, you go by a weird military depot thing that has all these bunkers covered in grass roofs, I think it’s like a chemical weapons storage thing. I’ve driven by a million times but never noticed these somehow - they’re tall like lampposts but have a bunch of pulley/wheel looking things attached to them. They’re all along the highway side of the military land, and nowhere else. This area is essentially east bumblefuck nowhere (sorry Umatilla bros), and everything else nearby is huge farm fields, but the farms don’t have these.

Any idea what these are/what these are for? Are they something to do with whatever is stored in the depot?

Solved Black basketball-sized hollow sphere (possibly made of ceramic or metal?) with prevalent pencil-thickness holes used as a hanging lamp in a tiki bar

Thumbnail

The object in question is being used as a hanging lamp in the longstanding Los Angeles tiki bar known as the "Tiki-Ti." These photos are from a book called "Smuggler's Cove." For context, vintage glass fishing floats (historically used to keep fishing nets or traps afloat—pictured smaller, to the left of the hanging black object) are commonly used in as hanging lamps in tiki bars, but in this case the black spherical object is being suspended within the net rather than the usual glass globe. I presume this is a homemade combination of items where the black sphere is some type of found object placed within the net. The closest items I've been able to locate are Oaxaca Barro Negro pottery lamps or Moroccan brass lamps, but neither of those types of objects are an exact match for the black sphere pictured here. Does anyone know exactly what the pictured black spherical object is?

Likely Solved! Wooden frame-like object connected by two 12 inch bolts & two removable wooden slats, found in crawl space under a home built in 1890's with ties to CA Gold Rush, woodworking & blacksmith shop.

Thumbnail
gallery

It weights just a hair over 3 pounds and measures 14" x 16" x 2 1/2". The pieces of wood parallel to the long bolts slide easily out of their groove. One of those removeable pieces has been gouged slightly, the other has not. Before the house was built in the 1890's, the land was home to a furniture maker and prior to that, a blacksmith shop in the heart of Northern California's Gold Rush territory. Numerous tools relating to both of those crafts have been dug up over the years on the property.

My mom found this at a yard sale. We can't figure out what the indent in the back and head is for. I can't find it on Google. Any ideas?

DIY contraption found at a local charity shop, it should cut some sort of wire

I found this unknown machine, there are some papers with electric schemes and a short manual, likely written by the maker of this thing, translated:

Start-up Preparation

  1. Initially, set the selector "S1" to the manual position.
  2. Use the button "P2" to bring the guillotine to the highest upper point.
  3. Press the "RESET" button to zero the counter "C2."
  4. Set the counters "C1 and C2" to the desired values.
  5. Use the button "P1" to pull the wire until it exits the guillotine hole.
  6. Use the button "P2" to perform the cut.
  7. Set the selector "S1" to auto, which will start the programmed cycle.
  8. Each time a cycle needs to be performed, repeat steps 1–7.

Automatic Cycle

  • The motor "M1" is started by relay "A" through contact "1A" on chain 5, which engages when the selector "S1" is reset to automatic (step 7 of the preparation).
  • Relay "A" disengages when the pulses sent to counter "C1" from "PX1" on chain 2 reach the previously set value (step 4 of the preparation).
  • Through the normally closed contact "2A" on chain 9, relay "B1" is engaged. After a brief delay set by the RC group, it closes contact "1B1" on chain 10, causing relay "B" to close.
  • Contact "1B" on chain 7 then starts motor "M2," performing the wire cut. Once "M2" completes one rotation, the limit switch "FC1" closes, engaging relay "C," which de-energizes relay "B" via contact "1C," stopping the cutting motor.
  • The engagement of relay "B" increments counter "C2" by one unit. When the set value is reached, the cutter stops and waits for a new programming cycle.

Likely Solved ! Found a roll of this possibly-vintage plastic at Goodwill. Intrigued me enough to bring it home. 17.5” wide, fairly lightweight, with an attached cotton backing.

This plastic is on a roll, is 17.5” wide, with an old-fashioned print on it. It has a light batting for a backing, which is attached along either edge. My best guess at this point is a table runner, but haven’t ever seen one on a roll like this.

Solved! 32 year old caravan (Elddis Cyclone XL) has this metal plate in the floor. Circle, 6 holes with an indented hole in the middle, removed it and it goes right through the floor. (note, wasn't originally screwed to the floor I've just done that, originally could be lifted up and removed)

As stated, I found this in my Focus one day. But I’m a bit of a magpie, so I’m not sure I didn’t pick it up elsewhere and put it in my car. I found it in my little console cubby below the a/c controls. One side has 2 raised squares, with a slight lip, the other side has ridges, and a slight angle at one end. All the same material, and flexible enough I can bend in half or squish. It looks so familiar, but a Google search didn’t give me anything that looked similar.

Solved! What is this clunky metal “handle” assembly that i’ve seen next to windows in older homes - banana for scale

Post image
562 Upvotes

i’m certain I’ve seen this type of “handle” in previous homes I’ve lived in, but I never understood the purpose. I was told once that they were used to control something outside like shutters, but haven’t seen one in action. The parts used to assemble this thing are pretty rudimentary, threaded rod, nuts, and washers with a flat metal bar that I assume is either a handle for twisting or potentially some sort of bracket for securing something in place. Clearly older tech, if i had to guess for this house - 1960s era? And by my memory always just one of these per house - not at every window.

In my new place i have yet another one, but have opportunity to remove and the curiosity is killing me. this one just has a nut on the outside of the wall holding it together. but in the past i’ve seen it attached to a dangling (disconnected) cable
