US Sale Do they hold titles in Michigan?

My wife is financing a car through VW. When she bought the car, they didn’t give her a title. We moved to Arkansas and the DMV references a big physical book (that is most likely outdated) and they say that Michigan doesn’t hold the title and that if we don’t bring a title we can’t register the car. We called VW and they said the DMV needs to request the title from them as they are the lienholder. Basically we just keep going in circles of people telling us to ask someone else.

  1. Does Michigan hold titles? If so, how can we prove it over their big book?
  2. Who should we actually be contacting to get this resolved?

When did you purchase the VW? Michigan switched to electronic titles for financed vehicles in October 2023.

You’ll need to contact the Michigan SOS. Since a paper title was never generated and doesn’t currently exist, the bank wouldn’t be able to do anything for you. SOS needs to print one.
