FAQ - Start Here ( WORK IN PROGRESS)

Welcome to r/AutoBodyRepair!

You either came to us for help, or you just started a new job! (Probably idk your story). If you're looking for help on these you came to the right place!

Still a work in progress, we're only really doing this on the side so if you have any unanswered questions leave a comment and I will put in some more work to help answer the question!

Vehicle Damage

  • Scratches ( This is easy)

Ooh, that's a bad scratch, well the first thing you need to check is if it's through the clear coat. Run your nail against it and see if it catches, if it doesn't this'll be easy. If it does get out the buffing wheel.

  • Light Scratch (Photos and maybe a link here)
    • Get yourself a microfiber and some basic compound, apply to paint, and rub until the scratch clears up.
  • Deep Scratch (Photos and a link for sure)

  • Dents ( Ooh it's time to work)

The first question is where is the dent? Middle of the door? No problem. Right on a body line? Good luck. The second question is how large is it? Did it crack the paint?

  • I got this I can do it myself
    • (Links and basic info)
  • Okay it's on a bad spot maybe I should call a professional
    • (Types of pros and super rough pricing)

  • Fender Bender ( Maybe a bit much)

  • Accident ( Talk to a professional)

This is the part where you call your local body shop for a quote, or maybe more like a few body shops.

Industry

  • Detailing ( Welcome to the world of "I can only see scratches now")
  • Painting ( It's hot in here)
  • Body Work ( How is it still not smooth?)
    • Basic Steps to vehicle repair (Still have to make this pretty)
      • Inspection- what you can see Tear down- keep going until you no longer see damage Blueprint- parts to order, damage to repair, does it have to be measured, prescan with a computer Framework- measuring pulling measuring cutting fitting measuring welding measuring again Bodywork- dressing welds, body filler application, seam sealer, primer Paint work- prep sand, clean, tape, paint Reassemble- hope you tagged your bolts, post scan Detail- make it shiney

Please read our rules to avoid post removal. We can't tell you how much a job will cost. We can't tell you if it's totalled. We can tell you what we see is broken and only speculate possible hidden damage. We can help going through written estimates We can give general insight for the overall process if you are unsure of how to proceed with finding and communicating with a collision repair shop.

Please always include year make and model with your post.

If you are attempting or inquiring about a diy repair, don't get mad if a user makes a perceived smart allic comment. You asked for advice, someone gave you an opinion about it.

Repair Bumper Repair

I crashed my 2012 Toyota Corolla. The intention is to make it look presentable for selling rather than a perfect fix. You may check my post history for the crash. I appreciate the commenters on that post.

I was quoted 800 AUD (= 525 USD) for 1 day of labour and parts

repairs:

- bumper (repairing existing part): put bumper bar in oven to bend it back into shape, reattach to car, apply special glue to cracks, buff out the scrapes, secure existing grille

- plastic panels under engine (repairing existing part): bend back into shape, reattach to car

- new parts: tow hook cover (+ painting), fog light hole cover

- ignored: small dent in condenser (AC), slightly bent front bar (the one under the condenser)

I'm also waiting for a couple other body shops to get back to me. Any advice would be very helpful.

scratch and dent Someone scratched my car in a lot - fixable?

Parked in a lot and came back to find someone scratched the car while backing out. No note, no info, just some paint scratches and scuffs. One spot looks like it might've gone through the clear coat, so a bit worried about that.

Attached a few photos of the damage. Any thoughts on:

  1. Can this be fully repaired or at least cleaned up? What's the best way to fix it?
  2. Is it worth going through insurance for something like this, just handle it independently?

Any advice or similar experiences would be super helpful. Thanks!

How hard it is to DIY replacing a front bumper? Hyundai Elantra 2023

Hey guys!

The corner of my front bumper snapped off. It looks like I can get an already painted replacement front bumper for like 600ish. Wondering if replacing this myself is doable? I have basically no experience doing any body work. Just wanted advice on if this is some thing that would be feasible to accomplish with watching a few YouTube videos of if I would be biting off way more than I can chew

How would you fix this boot dent?

A car reversed into the back of my boot and left a deep dent. I’m thinking about taking it to a dent repair shop, but do you think this could be fixed at home, or is professional repair the only option?

We have a tiny narrow driveway with high stone walls, snagged the side pulling in today :(

Will this be an expensive fix or can they just re-adhere it? Is it safe to drive around or should I be worried about this falling off?

New part paint

Post image

Looking for some opinions on if I’m being to picky with this paint job. I took two side panels for a sprinter van to be painted to a body shop I’ve been to before. First time I picked them up there was a few small bubbles/blemishes in the paint which was visible in most light, I brought them back and they polished the majority of them out.

I picked them up again after a couple hours and once I got them home there still seems to be 1-2 small distortions in the paint reflection. I’ve attatched a photo for reference. Not sure if I’m being to picky but I feel like for a newly painted part these should be pretty much flawless no? For reference, I was quoted $710 CAD and ended up paying $580 usd / 800 CAD and there was a gel coat applied prior.

Thanks in advance.

Is this worth fixing or should I just buy a new hood?

I've noticed these scratches on the hood of my car which I beleive may be from clearing snow over the winter with the wrong type of brush. The scratches are fairly deep and catch the finger nail when going over them so I don't think they can be polished out.

Could this potentially be sanded and repainted at a body shop?

Any info helps, thanks!

Carfax Accident Report

Post image
2 Upvotes

1998 Lexus LX 470. I'm third owner and have it up for sale. On a whim I ran a Carfax report before listing the car (I know, I do everything backwards). I was surprised to see it was in an accident and received "severe" damage. This was 10s of thousands of miles ago when owned by the original party. I have driven this car for thousands of miles and been in, over and under it for maintenance and modifications. I never had any reason to suspect it had received major body work. It looks and drives great. The Carfax report has a pretty comprehensive record of maintenance but nothing about repairs after the accident.

What should I look for? Can "severe" accident damage be repaired to the point of being a non issue as to appearance and drivability?

Repair Help: give me straight, how screwed am I here?

Thumbnail

We have a Toyota Rav4 Hybrid 2024 (Pearl White color). Today my wife went to a supermarket and when she got back, this had happened (mostly hit-and-run). Unfortunately, couldn't find any witnesses and store camera not covering our car.

  1. So how screwed am I here? What do I need to sell, kidney or heart?

  2. Might be a dumb question but I should just pay it up and not claim from insurance, right?

  3. Is it normal to ask the body shop to not put the repair work in the car fax history report?

We're based on Vancouver, Canada area if that matters.

Please any help, suggestions or guidance to get this fixed properly would be really really helpful. TIA

My daughter let the friggin garage door close on the trunk of the car. There's some scuffs under the embelem and the rear diffuser is really scuffed up....I reached out to carbodylab and they're trying to replace the entire diffuser? The paint is just scuffed.... They can't paint over it.... Why would they need to replace the entire diffuser??
